Project Concept
The widening gap between growing water needs of population and scarcity in supply
in major coastal cities in India is giving rise to alternative water treatment processes
such as desalination plants, STP, ETP and CETP
Desalination is a process that removes minerals from saline water to produce fresh water
suitable for consumption and has applications in municipal, industrial, or commercial.
ETP purifies the waste water used in various industries and is majorly used in chemical industry
by pharmaceutical companies to purify water and to remove toxic material. ETP is also used in
industrial sectors such as leather and tanneries.
STP is used to remove the contaminants from wastewater primarily from household sewage.
STP technique involves three stages primary, secondary and tertiary treatment.
CETP used by the cluster of small scale tanneries as the centralized treatment place for
wastewater management. Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) costs less to build
and operate on a per-cubic-meter-treated basis than a collection of individual sites.

Market potential
Key metrics…
The trend of urbanization in India and the rapid growth of population has exerted stress on civic
authorities to provide basic requirement such as safe drinking water, sanitation and infrastructure
which requires exploration of raw water sources, developing treatment and distribution systems

Market leaders
Emerging countries
2012 2014 2019
The global water treatment chemicals market was worth US$19.12 billion in 2014 and is
projected to reach US$24.94 billion by 2020, registering a CAGR of 4.53%
Wide-scale developments in the municipal water treatment, oil & gas, power generation, metal
& mining, and desalination industries in emerging countries such as China, India, Brazil, Saudi
Arabia, and Africa have led to the high demand for water treatment capacities

Market potential
To decrease the water supply demand gap, Gujarat’s State Wide Water Supply Grid is looking to
supply drinking water to 75% population of the State by creating bulk water transmission pipelines,
water treatment plants, service reservoirs, distribution pipeline network and allied structures under
Regional Water Supply Scheme (RWSS)

Growth Drivers -
Gujarat
Gujarat, one of the leading state in terms of economic growth and
industrialization, falls under the water-stressed category
Gujarat salinity has impacted 1200 to 1500 villages and 12.90 lakh
High coastal hectare of land since 1960 in Gujarat. The increasing salinity in Gujarat
salinity in specially in Saurastra and Kutch area which possess coastline of 1125
Gujarat km leads to ground water conservation scheme and desalination plant
in the state.
Poor condition
In Gujarat, Old, rusted or leaking water distribution pipelines are leading
of water
to contamination of drinking water. Most of the distribution pipes in the
distribution state are 20-30 years old.
pipelines
Decreasing per capital water availability, high industrial consumption and low water quality
generates the strong growth opportunities for the water treatment market

Site Location
Development of water treatment plant/ filtration plant of different capacity in RWSS
(Regional water supply scheme) of GWSSB (Gujarat water supply & sewerage board)
¾ Adequate and potable drinking water is being supplied through RWSS comprising of more
than one village, where local drinking water sources yield insufficient water or water is non
potable. RWSS are taken up under Rural water supply programme. The RWSS are based on
reliable sources like tube wells (Underground sources) or Surface water sources (Dam or
Narmada water).
¾ GWSSB provides drinking water supply to citizens of rural and urban area of Gujarat by
creation of various types of water supply projects

Gujarat government has identified 4 major water scare districts; North Gujarat, Central Gujarat,
Saurashtra and Kachchh.
Narmada water is tused o feed the regional water supply schemes and to give water to these 4
regions.
54 Rural Regional Water Supply Schemes covering 872 habitations are completed. Completed
rural regional water supply schemes are operated and maintained by GWSSB.
