Korean dramas had began airing in the Philippines since 2003, starting with

GMA Network as the very first network to air Koreanovelas starting with Bright Girl;

followed by ABS-CBN as the competitor for airing Korean dramas; as well as TV5

and other Free TV networks which they also worked to broadcast Korean dramas

through Philippine television. Koreanovelas are being more popular to many Filipino

televiewers as of today, and it even serves as an "Anti-Anime" and "Anti-Teleserye"

program. Korean dramas are automatically known as "Asianovelas", as Asian

dramas airing in the Philippines are not focused on Taiwanese and Chinese dramas

and doesn't include Japanese dramas.

South Korean dramas is one of the greatest interests for airing foreign

programs in the Philippines on its 21st century, which had already aired more than

100 Koreanovelas as of the end of 2014. Because of this, it permanently banned all

the Japanese Anime and Spanish Telenovela programs on Philippine Free TV in the

2010s, as well as the live action Tokusatsu shows are declined.

Korean dramas became a new trend in the Philippines it began airing since

2003. GMA Network of the Philippines was the very first one who adapted and aired

Korean dramas also called as koreanovelas. The first Korean drama of GMA

Network was the Bright Girl followed by ABS-CBN’s Meteor Garden adaptation

which also happen to be the competitor of GMA Network in airing Korean dramas.

There are also a lot of networks who adapt and air koreanovelas on Philippine
television such as TV5. Korean Dramas are very famous among the Filipino

others.

In 21st century, South Korean dramas are one of the best foreign programs in

the Philippines. South Korean dramas had already aired hundreds of koreanovelas

since 2014. Anime themes of Japanese and other foreign telenovelas was banned

on the Philippine television as of the end of 2010. “Tokusatsu” live action was also

According to Temblor (2016), K-drama is known for its fresh storyline and

scenic cinematography, which was the stepping-stone of Hallyu, which means flow

of Korea or an invasion of Korean culture in other countries, such as the Philippines.

K-drama had captured everyone specially the youth and middle-aged. The viewers

are attached to the story because the plot of K-drama are not the same old and very

predictable plots that are recycled from time-to-time and the viewers are more

attracted to K-drama because of the good-looking actors who portray the lead roles

of every K drama and the audience were in “kilig” because of that.

they make their own latest style in storyline and production quality, which was their

way to spread their entertainment to other countries especially the Philippines.

Korean dramas have gained such a wide following of people in any range of age.

Korean dramas create a connection among the viewers to their story because the

plot is unique and unpredictable compared to other plots which are already cliché.

The viewers also got attached because of the good-looking Korean actors who

Understanding Korean dramas makes someone enhance their vocabulary

because as they read the subtitles there are times they are encountering words that

is not familiar, so the best way to know the meaning of a word is to look for a

dictionary. By this the knowledge of gathering the meaning of words enhances a

man’s vocabulary skill, which is necessary for constructing sentences and phrases.

Korean Dramas help to develop the reading skill of the students because as

they encounter English subtitles in Korean Dramas it is best to search for the

meaning of unfamiliar words to understand what they are watching. The people or

students who are watching Korean Dramas enhance their vocabulary skill and it

helps them to construct words, paragraphs and written works that they will need.

It was also in 2000's when K-Pop shared the spotlight with Korean dramas.

Many fans around the world became fond of girl groups and boy bands especially

the Philippines, pushing Korean dramas aside. (Korean Culture and Information

Service, 2015). Although Korean dramas never lost its spotlight, there was a slight

decrease on the patronage given by the fans. That was until the internet came and

streaming online content boomed in the global market.

The trend Korean dramas and Korean Pop music became a hit since early

2000’s. In the Philippines and other countries, Korean Dramas and Korean Pop

music became popular because of the people who are addicted to idol bands and girl

In a more specific level, youth of today are undeniably more concerned with

foreign music,movies and television series. And when the word ‘addict’ is used to

describe the Filipinos youngsters, it really defines how they are very enthusiastic with

South Korean music and dramas. The youth spends a lot of time in watching their

idols online, stalking their social media accounts, attending events, purchasing

merchandise, and attending concerts ‘fangirling’, in one word. No matter how it

costs, even if it is worth more than their school allowance, Filipino K-pop and K-

drama fans see to it that they will be able to put into action their label of being die-

hard fans. Sometimes, they even sacrifice more important things just to prioritize

watching more episodes of South Korean dramas. For example, a student posted

how she is supposed to study for the examinations but is watching K-drama at the

time she updated her status (Dow, 2014).

Most of the youth fantasize foreign movies, dramas and television programs.

Filipino youth can be called an “addict” because on how they idolize and fantasize

Korean Dramas. They almost spend a lot of time and energy fantasizing to their

Korean idols in Korean Dramas. They create accounts on social media to stalk and

subscribe to their favourite channels and genre of their idols. Korean dramas and

Korean pop music are a trend in today’s society. Most of the Filipino fans spend a lot

of money for the concerts and dramas of their idols although they are sort of

allowance or the concert tickets are more than the amount of their allowance in
school. Most importantly they spend their time watching Korean Dramas rather than
