2 AAXO 2018
Foreword
AAXO Chairperson

About AAXO
2018 marks the third year since AAXO’s inception. What a ride it has been. As the
champion for the African exhibition industry, AAXO has been at the helm of ushering
in a new era. We have pioneered unique ways to offer credibility to our members
through initiatives such as the AAXO Badge of Approval and the ABC exhibition audit.
We have also hosted the AAXO ROAR Awards – a groundbreaking event where
organisers get recognition for their massive contribution and world class events.

On top of this, 2017 has seen us launch the Associate Membership tier for suppliers
and all members whom have enjoyed the opportunity to voice their needs and build
relationships with other industry players during our Open Conversation session, an
event that will become a regular occurrence in 2018 and beyond.

Before we concluded the year, AAXO broke the exciting news that we are partnering
with EXSA under the Exhibition Industry Alliance to offer the biggest industry awards
yet, showcasing the increasingly popular ROAR Awards. Another prominent
partnership is the one formed with the IAEE, which will also see us host collaborative
education and training days.

With these and many other valuable initiatives in full force, 2018 is set to be an
exciting year. As usual, we kick off the year in style with our fabulous ROAR Awards.
But this year we are pulling out all the stops by also hosting the Exhibition of
Exhibitions, Organiser, Exhibitor and Safety training days in the same week – bringing
the entire industry together for a jam-packed week of learning and collaboration.

To bring our members even more value, we have been hard at work to establish
partnerships with international organisations. We have a couple of announcements in
store for 2018 too, but you will have to wait in anticipation as we reveal our next
exciting initiatives during the year.

The 2018 AAXO Directory is a compilation of valuable information on Africa’s

exhibition industry geared towards assisting stakeholders in accessing information
relevant to their business. The focus in 2018 is on growth, continued investment in
events and international best practice as we work to propel this industry to new
heights.

AAXO
Who Are We?

ABOUT AAXO
AAXO was formed as a collective platform to represent the organiser industry at large by promoting growth and
development while addressing the industry’s challenges. Its efforts are directed towards its mission of being the
respected authority and representative of the exhibition organising industry responsible for governance, skills
development and research while upholding world-class industry standards. This, in turn, is designed to be the engine
that drives the African exhibition and organiser growth.

AAXO representation transcends across many industry sectors and the organisation uses its wealth of knowledge and
experience to address the unique challenges faced by organisers across Africa. Members are governed by an all-
encompassing code of conduct that informs ethical behaviour in the industry. Additionally, this code of conduct guides
the way exhibitions are conducted, the quality of exhibitions, and informs ethical interaction within the industry.

One of AAXO’s key mandates is to empower the industry with skills and knowledge towards creating a professional
industry that offers unparalleled service while creating value for all stakeholders. Much effort is invested into organising
training activities for various skills gaps identified as necessary in running successful exhibitions. The organising
community also stages events such as the Exhibition of Exhibitions to facilitate interaction between fellow members
and service providers where opportunities to share ideas, network and create business relationships are created.

The ROAR Awards have quickly become a celebrated industry staple. Creating a platform for organisers to receive
recognition for their exceptional work, the ROAR Awards take place with the Exhibition Industry Alliance. AAXO
leverages its vast network of partnerships with common interests, knowledge and expertise to advance the industry.
These partnerships offer essential business networks and value to members.

In upholding the African exhibition industry to world-class standards, AAXO keeps on top of developments in the
industry and constantly investigates new technologies to improve the standard of exhibitions. In an ever-changing and
extremely competitive environment, this is an important function for members who strive to grow their businesses by
creating competitive advantage.

2017 Successes

ABOUT AAXO
Since its inception in early 2016, AAXO has made significant strides to formalising and standardising the exhibition industry
for our organiser and supplier membership base. We set out to drive significant growth of the industry in Africa as a whole
and introduced and implemented numerous industry-first initiatives to do just that. These groundbreaking initiatives include:

INSIGHTFUL RESEARCH
In 2016, AAXO solicited the first ever South Africa exhibition industry research from Grant Thornton. The results, which
we released at a formal media briefing in early 2017, cast significant light on the impact and contribution of the
exhibition industry while also highlighting trends and opportunities. Some of the key findings included:

• The estimated total income from direct, indirect and induced income over the period totaled a remarkable R75 billion.
• Financial contributions of tourism were in excess of R23 billion through the 1 million visitors attracted into South
Africa and this accounted for a third of the industry’s total contribution to GDP.
• Tourism from exhibitions also helped sustain an estimated 47 000 jobs in South Africa.
• The exhibition industry contributed R3,3 billion to national taxes, making a massive contribution to South Africa’s
economy in this way
AAXO is in the process of soliciting new research to benchmark this study in early 2019, so watch this space.

CELEBRATING ROAR-ING SUCCESSES

In line with our mandate of being a champion for organisers and suppliers in the exhibition industry, AAXO held the
pioneering AAXO ROAR Awards in early 2017 – an event that will become an annual industry staple, giving our
membership the chance to also enjoy recognition (like exhibitors have done for quite some time). The 2017 event was
an extraordinary occasion, bringing together the largest industry gathering in over a decade (330 pax). Also, for the
first time ever, entries were completely digital and all shows entered could be audited through AAXO’s ABC initiative.

GLOBAL EXHIBITIONS DAY

Another “first” that we are extremely proud of is AAXO’s Global Exhibitions Day (GED) engagement. 74 countries in
total joined in the celebrations while this global event reached 3.1 million people on Twitter alone. Over the last two
years that AAXO has been involved in GED celebrations, this momentous event has included the following:

• An Exhibition Industry ‘’Sympathy Sleepout’’ (2016)

Exhibition industry staff spent the night with like-minded industry professionals while gaining valuable insight into the
exhibition industry.
• AAXO and SAACI “Serving the Industry” at MARKEX/MADEX 2017
It was a privilege and a fun activity when AAXO “gave back” to the industry by serving lunch and champagne to
attending suppliers.
• Launch of the Associate Membership tier
This membership tier for exhibition venues and suppliers was received with excitement by all MARKEX/MADEX 2017
attendees. The aim of this membership is twofold: to open opportunities to venues and suppliers that were previously
only available to organisers and to increase credibility in the industry as a whole because of the fact that all AAXO
members have a strict code of conduct. For the 44 new Associate Members who have joined so far, the exclusive
use of the “AAXO-Approved Venue” and “AAXO-Approved Supplier’ badges put them in another league.
• Exhibitor and Organiser training
GED 2017 offered two days of invaluable information sharing by world-renowned speakers. Global trends were
presented. Exhibitors were equipped with the critical know-how on stand design and the power of displaying
products in a catchy and effective way. The organisers’ training covered the mechanics of sales, customer retention
and satisfaction.

OTHER GROUNDBREAKING INITIATIVES

• Capetonians experienced a successful Organiser and Exhibitor Training event to bring them up to speed with
Gautengers.
• AAXO successfully published and distributed the official, all-inclusive, AAXO Directory.
• The maiden Open Conversations session was attended by members and the industry who shared their views and
needs. This initiative is included in the 2018 AAXO Agenda as well.
• Another groundbreaking event was the Exhibition of Exhibitions (EoE) which showcased all the exhibitions to be held
during the year. This exciting event will again take place at the end of January 2018 and is set to bring the industry
alive with possibility.
AAXO continues to strive to be the authority and representative of the exhibition organising industry. By directing its
efforts towards growing, developing and addressing challenges in the industry AAXO aligns with its mission.

ABOUT AAXO
GROUNDBREAKING PARTNERSHIP
The Exhibition Industry Alliance (EIA) ushers in a new dawn for the Southern Africa exhibition sector.
“We are only as strong as we are united” – JK Rowling

After months of rigorous consultations and negotiations, AAXO (Association of African Exhibition Organisers) and EXSA
(Exhibition and Events Association of Southern Africa) have signed an agreement to work together under the EIA
(Exhibition Industry Alliance) umbrella. In this partnership, EXSA will serve as a Supplier and Venue focused association
while AAXO will continue to serve through its Organiser focus. The respective associations are dedicated to ensuring
that members receive the best possible benefits by sharing an annual industry directory, EIA Awards ceremony, market
research, various training sessions, collaboration at the annual Exhibition of Exhibitions as well as the popular EXSA
annual conference.

AAXO and EXSA will continue to run independently but will collaborate on major projects (mentioned above). Parts of
the agreement include the introduction of the EIA package, which offers discounted rates for membership of both
associations with access to intellectual property, research conducted by both institutions and training by the
associations.

EIA hosted the first ever Exhibition Industry Awards ceremony in January 2017. This successful event was attended by
about 350 industry players. The second edition of the awards is scheduled in February 2018.

AAXO is committed to working with EXSA to form a united front for the exhibition industry where exhibition organisers,
venues and suppliers can work together for the greater good of the industry but at the same time focusing on their
respective industry sector issues and priorities.

“We are eager to start implementing the points of the agreements which will benefit the industry whilst ensuring that
the sector is professional and credible for all” commented Carol Weaving on the partnership.

AAXO PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT

• Increase membership base in South Africa & Africa – AAXO already represents more than 80% of the industry in
South Africa. We have our sights set on Africa.

• Lobbying government in South Africa and Africa (DTI/SARS/Convention Bureaus/Embassies/High

Commissions) – AAXO has numerous international partnerships. Noteworthy is the VAT Ruling (SARS). We are
constantly looking for new ways to improve the industry.

• Address the venue crisis in Africa – the 2017 UFI Congress again proved the need for more venues across the
continent. AAXO is working towards a solution.

• Develop a commission standard payable to Ad Agencies to increase participation – two very important
matters that AAXO is addressing.

• Speed dating for Organisers and Suppliers – an initiative to build your networks.

• AAXO to host “Open Conversations” in 2018 – another opportunity for our members and the industry to voice
opinions and needs in a fruitful fashion.

• AAXO’s ground-breaking industry App – is being developed – think of it as your virtual, comprehensive, one-stop
industry directory.

• AAXO recruitment specifically for Organisers – we are creating an industry recruitment hub (a platform where
members can advertise their vacancies).

• Develop partnerships in the Accommodation and Travel sectors – an example is Tsogo Sun, where members
get a discount.

B2B Events
AAXO

Business to Business (B2B) events are consistently gaining popularity both in Africa and across the globe. As the most
popular B2B events, exhibitions are perfectly positioned to leverage this increasing popularity to both enhance the
industry as a whole as well as to drive growth across economies. That is exactly what AAXO seeks to achieve through
our mandate of formalising and standardising the African exhibition industry. This is why we invest significantly in
ABOUT

understanding not only the trends but also the impact of exhibitions.
2017 AAXO

It is nothing new that B2B events like exhibitions drive growth. After all, that is why our industry exists. We see this
growth in the amount of industry players, in the returns our organiser membership base show to their clients and/or
companies as well as in the substantial contribution that the industry makes to both South Africa and Africa’s
economies (you would have read all about this in our previous directory that detailed the results from the research into
the impact of the exhibition industry in Africa, conducted by Grant Thornton).

Just how much growth B2B events enable has always been a tad unclear, until now. Recent research shows some
interesting trends, such as:

• The amount of people from Africa who express interest in B2B events across the continent has increased by a
substantial 20 times in the last four years (that is a 40% year on year growth).

• The African countries with the most active exhibition industries are South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt and Kenya (with
interest in South Africa and Nigeria’s exhibition industries literally doubling in the last four years).

• Nigeria is a popular exhibition destination for people from South Africa, Kenya and Ghana, while South Africa is very
popular among people from Botswana.

• By contrast, South Africans travel mostly to Ghana, while Kenyans go to Uganda and Nigerians tend to look for
exhibitions outside the boarders of Africa.

• The United States of America, Canada and China are the top three countries Africans visit to attend exhibitions
abroad.

• There is a growing trend for Africans to visit North America for Agriculture, Forestry and Education-related
exhibitions, while France attracts Africans interested in Fashion, Apparel and Textiles. China is popular for Industrial
Engineering and Electronic exhibitions and the United Arab Emerates draws African delegates mostly for its
Cosmetics, Medical and Pharmaceutical exhibitions.

• Within Africa itself, different regions are also gaining popularity for different categories in the exhibition industry.
Egypt, for example, has built a reputation as an attractive destination for Medical and Pharmaceutical exhibitions,
while Kenya is known for exhibitions in Building and Construction. Nigeria has become a powerhouse in the Power
and Energy-related exhibition space, while South Africa is breaking new grounds as a Food and Beverage exhibition
hub.

• The most inbound guests come to Africa from India, the United States of America and the United Kingdom.
Interestingly, people from Pakistan also show substantial interest in visiting exhibitions in Africa (more so even than
Chinese people).

• What brings the world to Africa? Exhibitions in Building and Construction,

Food and Beverages, Industrial Engineering, Power and Energy, Agriculture
and Forestry, Medical and Pharmaceutical, Hotel and Restaurants,
Industrial Products, Education and Training and Apparel and Clothing are
the most popular.

In addition to the amount of growth that so many exhibitions can bring for
organisers and local exhibitors alike, there is also real value in the
economic impact that exhibitions have due to the fact that they invite
hoards of people from all over the world. What better way to strengthen
international relation-ships and trade than to show the world what Africa is
worth through our fantastic exhibitions.

Africa: the new trade frontier

AAXO

Early in 2017, AAXO released ground-breaking industry-first research into the economic impact of the exhibition
industry in South Africa. Since then, AAXO has set it sights on Africa as a whole – having extended our mandate to
formalise and standardise the exhibition industry not just in South Africa but on the entire African continent. By acting
as the champion for the exhibition industry in Africa and offering our diverse African membership base a platform to (1)
ABOUT

connect with other members, suppliers and exhibitors, (2) learn through our extensive and comprehensive organiser
and exhibitor training days, (3) gain credibility by using our AAXO Badge of Approval and the ABC exhibition audits and
2017 AAXO

(4) voice their needs and opinions in fdforums like the Open Conversations AAXO pioneered in 2017.

With this new and improved mission to drive growth in the exhibition industry across Africa, AAXO has expanded our
area of interest to Africa as a whole when it comes to conducting research. We quickly discovered interesting facts
about trade in Africa:

USA Brazil UK France Holland Germany Italy India China Japan

AFRICA’S TOP 10 BILATERAL TRADERS

AFRICA’S EXPORTS TO BRICS COUNTRIES AFRICA’S IMPORTS FROM BRICS COUNTRIES

In addition to substantial trading between BRICs countries, Africa is also trading internally. So much so, that over the
past 5 years, the intra-African exports average share of total African exports stood at 11%, with fuels and mining
constituting two thirds of Africa’s total merchandise exports for 2010.

ABOUT AAXO
AFRICA’S MOST EXPORTED COMMODITIES

There has long been debate about the African middle class: who they are, which countries in Africa have the biggest
middle class demographic and how this group of the population can be grown to help drive Africa’s economic
development as a whole. Research shows that Nigeria and Ethiopia are tied for the biggest middle class population
(8.62%), followed by Sudan (6.87%) and South Africa (4.24%).

To qualify as a middle class citizen, a person would:

• Earn over $4 per day, but less than $70
• Have disposable income available
• Be employed, run a business or be busy studying
• Hold a secondary education

Tapping the potential
AFRICA

The birthplace of humanity, Africa is both vast in size and rich in diversity. Moreover, it is rich in opportunity – something
that more and more international exhibition organisers and communities are starting to realise.

To propel Africa forward numerous Regional Economic Communities have formed, where companies, like our
Organiser membership base, can tap into massive international networks, industry insights and resources. All of this
on top of the more convenient and less restricted trade opportunities traditionally associated with Free Trade Regions.
AAXO
FOCUS
2017

Following is a breakdown of the above regional economic communities which our members from across Africa can
enjoy benefits from:

CEN-SAD: COMMUNITY OF SAHEL-SAHARAN STATES

Since its inception in 1998, CEN-SAD has aimed to achieve economic unity through the implementation of the free
movement of people and goods though member states, so that the area occupied by member states serves as a free
trade area.

The CEN-SAD member states include: Benin, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Chad, the Comoros, Cote
d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, the Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria,
Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, the Sudan, Togo and Tunisia.

design and operable walls, an almost unlimited number of venue configurations are available to our

excellence.

column-free event space in Africa. The Centre is also ISO 9001, ISO14001, ISO22000 and HACCP
certified, which are international quality standards focused on service delivery, environmental
