ASSIGNMENT#1

OUTLINE:
 Difference between PBX & PSTN
 Difference between Network Simulator & Network Emulator .List any two Network Simulator
& Emulator
 Difference between Circuit Network & Datagram Network

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PBX AND PSTN

 Private Branch Exchange (PBX) :
PBX stands for “ Private Branch Exchange “ is basically a telephone line system within an
enterprise whitch switches calls between enterprise user on local lines while allowing all users to share a
certain number of external phone lines.

The main purpose of PBX is to save of cost of requiring a line for each user to the telephone’s company
central office.

 Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) :

PSTN stands for “ PUBLIC SWITCHED TELEPHONE NETWORK “is the world’s collection
of interconnected voice_orinted telephone network. It’s the aggregation of circuit_switching telephone
network that has evolved from the days of Alexander Graham Bell.

Comparison Between PBX & PSTN

Public Switched Exchange Public Switched Telephone Network

Used in private sector Used in public sector

Owned and operated by private enterprise Both commercial and government owned
rather than telephone company

Scales to thousands of phones Scales to hundred of thousands of phones

Used proprietory protocols to control telephones Used open-standard protocols between telephones
and switches

Interconnects remote branch subsystem and Interconnects with other PSTN switches , PBXs
telephones and telephones
Primary task to provide residential telephone Support user telephone within a company

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NETWORK SIMULATOR & NETWORK

EMULATOR
 Network Simulator
Network simulator generates test conditions approximating actual or operational conditions.Simulators
uses mathematical formulas to predict behaviors.

 Network Emulator
A network emulator, also reffered to as a WAN Emulator,is used to test the performance of real
network,.These devices can also be used for such purposes as quality assurance, proof of concept,or
troubleshooting.

Comparison Between Network Simulator & Emulator

Network Simulator Network Emulator

A simulator can perform task to demonstrate A emulator can copy the behavior of a network to
the behavior of a network and its components. functionally replace it.

Simulator is the dummy version of real software Emulator can be considered as a software that runs
which does expected configuration. on top of a hosting computer.

Simulator are connected to a real network Emulator not connected to a real network

Simulator refers to a model to use network Emulator is a technical aspects through witch can
performance and train operators testing software and hardware

Fore CCNA & CCNET Level, following network simulator and emulator are useful.

 PACKET TRACER ( Network Emulator )

 BOSON NETSIM (Network Simulator )
 GNS3 ( Network Simulator )
 CERTEXAMS NETISM ( Network Emulator )
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CIRCUIT NETWORK & DFATAGRAM
NETWORK
 Circuit Network
Circuit network are connection-orinted , which means that vthere is a reservation of resources like
buffers and bandwidth etc. for the time during which the newly setup VC is going to be used by a data
transfer session.

 Datagram Network
Datagram network are connection-less , which means that there is no need for reservation resources as
there is no dedication path for a connection session.

Comparison Between Cicuit & Datagram Network

Issues Circuit Network Datagram Network

Addressing Each packet contain a short VC Each packet contain source and
number destination addresses

Routing Route is chosen when VC is Each packet is routed

setup. All packet follow this route indepentally

Suitability Connection-oriented sevices Connection-oriented and

connection-less services

Reliability Cicuit network are highly reliable Datagram network are less
reliable as compared to circuit
network

Implementation cost Implementation of circuit Implementation of datagram

network are costly network are cost-efficient

Resource Failure All passing VCs passing through Packets are lost oinly during
the failed resources are resource failure
terminated
