Course Objectives:

1. To study different coordinate systems for understanding the concept of gradient, divergence and curl of a
vector.
2. To study the application of Coulomb’s Law and Gauss Law for electric fields produced by different charge
configurations.
3. To evaluate the energy and potential due to a system of charges.
4. To study the behavior of electric field across a boundary between a conductor and dielectric and between
two different dielectrics.
5. To study the magnetic fields and magnetic materials.
6. To study the time varying fields and propagation of waves in different media.

Module-2 Numerical
1) Find the work done in moving a point charge of Q =-20µC from origin to P(4,2,0)
along the path x2 =8y. Given V/m and ε = t0
2) A point charge of 1µC is at y=-3m and another point charge of 2µC is at y=+3m.
Find the electric potential at a point P(4,0,0)m.
3) A parallel plate capacitor of 0.8 nF has an area of 1.51m2 and separation of
10mm. What separation would be required to obtain the 10nF capacitance
between the plates?

Module-3 Theory
1) Starting from Gauss’s law in integral form, derive Poisson’s and Laplace
equation. Write Laplace equation in all the coordinate systems.
2) State and prove Uniqueness theorem.
3) State and Explain Stoke’s theorem
4) State and prove ampere’s circuit law and apply it to a straight solid conductor
to calculate the magnetic field intensity
5) State & explain Biot – Savart law. Using this find the magnetic field intensity
due to an infinite length conductor carrying current I.

7) Clearly distinguish between scalar magnetic potential and vector magnetic
potential.

1) Use Laplace equation to find the capacitance per unit length of a co-axial

Module-4 Numerical

find the magnitude of the vector force extended on the moving particle by the field:

2) The z=0 plane marks the boundary between two magnetic medium. Medium-1 is the region
z>0 and Medium-2 is the region z<0. The magnetic flux density in medium-1 is
