PROGRESS REPORT
(As of December, 2018)
The Environment and Conservation Management extension activity of the Natural Science Department of the College of Arts and Sciences spearheaded by
the Biology program is an on-going approved extension project with a funding of Php 50, 200.00 under Special Order OP 5005-SO-2016-556. The project initiated
the “Puno Para sa Kalikasan” activity which aimed to plant more trees in the assigned planting site of CSU Carig at San Roque Watershed managed by the Metropolitan
Tuguegarao Water District and eroded portion of Cagayan and Pinacanauan River Banks. After a year of numerous tree planting activities of the campus and around
2,500 seedlings were planted by the different stakeholders including students, faculty, barangay folks, policeman and government employees. Problem arise on the
sources of seedlings and transportation mechanism on the planting site. The extension team of the College decided to shift on seedling production activities. The
extension in-charge collaborated with Barangay San Roque officials to established a communal nursery for the production of tree seedlings particularly fruit bearing
and indigenous trees. The collaboration was initiated with a memorandum of agreement signed by both parties. The agreement includes the following activities:
1. Establish communal nursery for indigenous and fruit tree seedling production;
2. Train individuals specially the 4P’s beneficiaries and women’s group of the barangay (GAD);
3. Establish income generating livelihood project from the produced seedlings; and
4. Collaborate with NGA’s, NGO’s and private sector for the conservation of biodiversity through continuous production of indigenous and fruit tree seedlings.
Recently, the extension project organized the San Roque Cacao Growers Association to manage the possible livelihood program to be initiated once the
organization will be registered to the Department of Labor for possible business grant. Also, the team collaborated with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce
Incorporated Region 02 headed by Governor Cloyd Velasco to assist the association in the different training and business opportunity endeavor to ensure the success
of the association.
