Have pupils identify what tens of verbs are the following then let them use
each in a sentence:

Have pupils look at the pictures:
Do you help your parents? What household chores do you do? Do you cook?
Why is it important that you know how to cook? (TLE Integration)
What can you see in the picture? What do they do?
Let the pupils read the sentences:
1. Carlo and Carla cooked food yesterday.
2. The pupils recited during the class discussion.
3. The children played merrily last Saturday.
4. The mountaineers hiked at the mountain a week ago.
Discuss :
What is the highlighted word in the first sentence? in the second sentence? in the third
sentence? And So on…….
What part of speech are these highlighted words? In what tense of verbs are they?
How do we form the past form of these verbs?
If – d or –ed is added to the present form to form their past form, how do we call these
verbs?
To change the verb in the past tense, you have to determine first whether the verb is
regular or irregular verb.
• Regular verbs are changed into past tense by adding –d or –ed ending. Examples:
talk-talked dance-danced roar-roared .

Discuss how the verbs form the past tense.

Verbs where some letters of the word are changed to form their plural are called irregular
nouns. Ex. Hide-hid, ride- rode, hung-hang, fall-fell, sweep-swept.

Some verbs have the same present and past tense. Ex. Read – read(pronounced
differently), burst, split, broadcast, cut, put, hurt, let, hit, spread, shut, bet, quit, cost.

Past tense states completely done activities that are frequently signaled by time
expressions such as the following:
* yesterday,
* last week, (Expressions with “last”)
* few days ago, (Expressions with “ago”)
* in ancient times
* once upon a time
