Sensory Scientists - Week 7
The HUMAN BODY
Welcome, Introduction, Coloring, Wiggle Seats – Visual & Vestibular: (~10 minutes)

 Coloring pages – Human Body coloring pages (kid friendly)


 Crayons
 Table set up with Wiggle Seats for each child, and seats for therapists
 Have children enter room and color pages as group waits for all participants to arrive.

 Welcome to Week 7 of Sensory Scientists Summer Group! Today is the last group! 
 Introduce Theme of the Week, Visual Schedule & Group Rules
o Introduce theme of the week, present participants with visual schedule for the day, explain the
plan & re-introduce group rules (kind words, hands to yourself, listen to leaders, and HAVE
FUN, etc.)

 Supplies:
 Coloring Pages – Human Body coloring pages (kid friendly)
 Crayons
 Room set-up as directed above
 Visual schedule (1 for each child & therapist)
 Group Rules on Printout (1. Follow directions, 2. Be nice, 3. Hands to yourself, 4. HAVE
FUN, etc.)

Simon Says & Skeleton Dance – Visual, Auditory & Proprioceptive: (10 minutes)

 Get the body moving!

 Supplies:
 Possibly a computer to watch dances and dance along.

Learning About the Heart – Auditory, Vestibular, & Proprioceptive: (5 minutes)

 Sound of the human heart – on the computer or phone


 Children use a stethoscope to hear the heart
 Encourage child to run in a circle around the room to get his/her heart pumping

 Supplies:
 Possibly a computer or phone with speaker to listen to heart beat noises

Creating Blood w/ Water Beads – Visual & Tactile: (10-15 minutes)

 Prepare supplies before session & set up messy sensory bin area.
 Watch the video about blood:

 Then together assemble blood, adding the red and white blood cells using water beads.

 Supplies:
 Computer to watch video
 Sensory bin to fill with blood components
 Red water beads
 Ping pong balls
 Something for the platelets (pieces of plastic cut up?
 Plasma – a little bit of water

Water Bead Heart Stress Ball – Tactile: (10-15 minutes)


 Prepare supplies before session & set up messy sensory bin area.

 Make heart shaped stress balls from the blood water beads

 Use hands and tools to help scoop blood into heart (cut milk jug or ziplock bag with a few holes and
squeeze)

 Supplies:
 Heart Shaped Balloons
 Funnel to help put water beads into balloon (bottle with bottom cut off and balloon attached
to bottle opening?)
 Re-use red water beads from previous activity

Calm-Down & Pretzel Skeleton Snack – Tactile & Gustatory: (10 minutes)

 Prepare supplies before session & set up kitchen area for skeleton construction.
o Set out food supplies on table
o Each child gets a piece of paper to glue their skeleton onto if they want to. – If not, then let them
build and eat it)

 Supplies:
 Food:
 Pretzels (sticks and originals)
 Mozzarella cheese balls (or can substitute with mini marshmallows or seedless
grapes)
 Other possible options:
o Chocolate chips
o Candy eye balls
o Etc.
 Paper – one for each child
 Elmer’s glue

Hand out “Sensory Scientist Training Certificates of Completion” to each child!!


 Consider having a very brief ceremony with the parents involved!
o Reflect on what they have learned/achieved during this “training” session!
o Congratulations kids!!!
