The story of a rich man and a poor man in the Bible

The rich man’s money didn’t help him even to get a ‘drop of water’
In the Bible, Jesus mentions the story of a rich man and a poor man. The poor man was so poor
that he could not even have one of the basic needs of life –food. You can read the full story in
(Luke 16:19-31). Here is the summary.
The rich man ‘lived in luxury every day’. The poor man (literally) named Lazarus (not the
Lazarus who Jesus raised from death), ‘covered in sores, longing to eat what fell from the rich
man’s table’. This means he was longing for some help, perhaps for medical treatment, and food.
The poor man lived ‘near the gates of the rich man’, which means both of them were neighbors,
or knew each other. But the rich man couldn’t bother helping the poor man.
The rich man went to hell and the poor man went to heaven
The poor man gained the greatest wealth – eternal life in heaven
When the end came, the poor man Lazarus went to heaven, and the rich man went to hell. Well, I
made that up. The Bible does not say that Lazarus went to heaven, but he was carried to
Abraham’s side, which means a place of comfort.
I do not want to get involved in a theological debate. I simply believe the place of comfort is
heaven. While in hell, the tables have turned. The rich man could see the poor man Lazarus in
heaven, alongside of Abraham, enjoying his afterlife. The rich man, while agonizing in hell,
cried out,” Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in
water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire’.
Was the rich man punished for being rich?
No. The rich man was not punished for being rich, but for his attitude towards the poor man
Lazarus when they were alive. Being rich is not a sin. But refusing to help your neighbor who
has a genuine need (in this case genuine basic needs of life) with your excess wealth is a sin.
The poor man Lazarus lived near the rich man’s gate, and therefore, the rich man was aware of
him, yet he chose not to help Lazarus. When the end came, the rich man’s possession could not
help him even to get a ‘drop of water’. He had to leave all his earthly possessions on earth and go
alone.
While alive, he saved a lot of worldly possessions. In the process the rich man either forgot to
save his soul or too busy to save his soul. The rich man was punished for his attitude. Even
though the rich man was capable of helping out Lazarus, he chose not to. Perhaps the rich man
was also punished for his wrong priorities in life – too much focus on making money at the cost
of soul.
Are you a rich man or a poor man?
Helping those who are in genuine need with our excess wealth and the salvation of our soul are
the two key messages behind the story of the rich man and the poor man in the Bible. The poor
man’s soul ended up in heaven for eternity, and the selfish rich man ended up in hell for eternity.
