Period 2

IDENTIFICATION OF SAME WORDS USED AS DIFFERENT PARTS OF SPEECH

Recap of the previous class: Parts of speech are divided into eight. Every word is a part of
speech because of the way it is used. (Max 5 first min)

Today’s lesson is about how the same word becomes different parts of speech according to the
way in which they are used.

Look at the following sentences.

1. Give me some water.

2. I water my plants every day.

In the first sentence, the word WATER names something. So it is a noun.

In the second sentence, the same word WATER expresses an action. It tells what they do. So
here, it is working as a verb.

Now study the word ROUND in the following sentences:

1. The earth is round. (Adjective)

2. The boys ran round the tree. (Preposition)

3. Will you come round to our house this evening? (Adverb)

4. We won the first round of the cricket match. (Noun)

5. He rounded his lips and whistled. (Verb)

So similarly, there are many words which behave differently in a sentence according to their
place as well as how they are used in a sentence.
