Artifact Description and Rationale

Artifact Description

For Learning Outcome 1E: Technology, I thought it would be best to pull my final

project from C&T 840: Emergent Literacy and Beginning Reading. According to the final

project requirements in the C&T 840 course, my final assignment was an e-book.

According to the C&T 840 final assignment guidelines, we were to create an

information text e-book following given guidelines and using the CAST Book Builder.

We also had to write a brief paper that provides information on the decisions you made

related to the e-book you created following the guidelines provided.

The e-book that I wrote is about Whales. The reason that I chose this topic is

because I had a first grade student who was interested in everything about the ocean

and they wanted to learn more about whales. While for this e-book assignment, it was

tailored for older students to read independently, I was able to adapt it for my first grade

student in my own classroom.

For the written component, I provided information on my audience/readers, topic

of the informational book and reason for selection, Common Core State Standards, as
well as e-book features. E-book features I used: print features, word recognition,

fluency, vocabulary, comprehension.

Rationale

The learning outcome states: “1E. Technology. ​Create experiences for

students/learners to engage with technology to enhance and extend their learning​.​” I

understand this outcome as being able to create resources, lessons, and units to

enhance learning opportunities.

As educators, we should provide opportunities for students to extend their

learning. This artifact pairs well with this learning outcome because the objective of this

e-book is to make it informational and an additional opportunity for students to learn

about whales. This e-book allowed me to create a book based on accountable

resources and create an interactive book tailored for one of my student’s interests.

The ability to use technology to personalize learning for students in our

classrooms is amazing. The e-book is accessible to all students and is built in a way to

scaffold learning in a way that helps students learn independently. There are

comprehension questions that are asked within the text, vocabulary words that are

defined within the text and glossary, and various print features to let it be easily read by

all readers.
