Learning Outcome 3: Professionalism and Leadership

Artifact Description and Rationale

Artifact Description

For Learning Outcome 3: Professionalism and Leadership, I thought it would be

best to pull the final assignment from C&T 807: Multicultural Education. According to the

final assignment requirements, we read a book called Waking Up White: And Finding

Myself in the Story of Race.

Included in the paper is an introductory paragraph to the book (what is the book

about and background information on the author), as well as a chapter by chapter

summary of the book, analysis and application of course readings to the overall concept

of the book, and a conclusion paragraph that summarizes what we learned from the

book and how it will be used to inform our future practice.

Rationale

The learning outcome states: “Learning Outcome 3: Professionalism and

Leadership. Demonstrate professionalism and growth during the master’s program,

including evidence that shows participation in collaborative professional activities and

documents a leadership role that the candidate has taken or intend to take as part of

your school or larger community.” I understand this outcome as showcasing the growth

that occurred throughout the course of our master’s program.

I chose this artifact because it shows my personal growth throughout the course

as well as how this will affect my professional life within the classroom, and even during

every day interactions. As educators, we interact with coworkers, students, and

community members of various backgrounds, and we should become more intentional

with how we converse and even think. There is a big discussion of intent versus impact

in Irving’s work, and this something I actively think about when I have conversations

with people I interact with. Within this artifact is one of my reflections on how I intend on

having more open, courageous conversations with my students and others to disrupt

the cycle and dismantle racism.
