BELGRADE, SERBIA

Training Course about fighting discrimination and social exclusion of the LGBT
population through music and video production
Host organisation:
Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) Belgrade, Serbia is an LGBT rights organisation which
promotes equality of all citizens in all their civil rights; solidarity between citizens and of
the society with its individual members, regardless of their racial, religious, national,
social, sexual and other differences; non-violence, as the only acceptable means of
resolving conflict; and tolerance, as the necessary basis for a healthy and prosperous
society.
GSA’s main activities in the fight against homophobia, discrimination and violence
against the LGBT people in Serbia are: providing legal aid to victims of violence and
discrimination, political lobbying for LGBT rights, and cultural activism.

Trainers:
Ivan Markovic (Gemini Braunstein) – multimedia artist
(http://www.youtube.com/legeminibraunstein)
Nebojsa Djeric – experienced Salto trainer (http://trainers.salto-youth.net/NebojsaDjeric/)
The main goal of our training course is to offer the participants an opportunity to get
actively involved in fighting discrimination and social exclusion of LGBT people,
through creative methods and activities involving music and video production. During the
course, using non-formal ways of learning, participants will create a product – by writing
lyrics in their different languages for an original song created for this purpose, recording
their own voices, and recording a music video – in order to send out the message of
tolerance, equality, non-discrimination and solidarity among different nations and
cultures. The product – song and video – will be distributed after the training course in all
participating countries, therefore spreading out that important message.
- choosing the song to record (out of 3 original songs created specifically for this
purpose),
- writing lyrics for the song in participants’ own native languages and other languages
they may speak,
- singing,
- creating a music video by recording in- and outdoors in the City of Novi Sad and its
vicinity (in the nature or nearby towns and localities),
- holding round tables and discussions every day on topics related to the fight against
discrimination and exclusion: multiculturality and multilingualism, use of non-violent
methods for making a statement and using art to spread the message of tolerance, non-
discrimination and equality of all people as the basis of democratic societies, social
inclusion and the empowerment of LGBT youth.
All these activities have the aim to promote solidarity, cooperation, and creativity in
youth work and in fighting discrimination, violence and social exclusion.
Primarily LGBT youth and activists, but also all people who wish to be actively involved
in working with LGBT youth (youth workers, youth leaders, NGO activists). The
participants should be interested in LGBT rights and equality, in fighting discrimination
and homophobia. They should also be interested in music and video production, and in
exploring how to use them as a method in their youth work and social activism. We
would like to get participants already with some knowledge about music and singing, but
this is not a prerequisite.
-To promote tolerance, equality and solidarity among different cultures, nationalities,
ethnic backgrounds
-To promote young people’s active participation in society, and especially to empower
LGBT youth to take an active role in their communities in fighting homophobia and
discrimination
-To increase knowledge of music and visual arts as a tool in fighting discrimination,
homophobia, hate speech and violence
Working language:
English – all participants must be able to actively communicate using English language
