Orthotic Springs
 Used in an orthotic brace - helps people walk again

 Working with our partner Fabtech Systems

 Trying to get support for the VA Hospitals to use

 This will be a great benefit to veterans

 The VA spring uses Boeing scrap

15
16
Special Projects

17
Mega-Trend
 About 7B people in the world today

 UN estimates - by 2100 there will be 11B (57% growth):

 Asia - 4B to 5B
 ROW - 2B to ≈ 2B
 Africa: 1B to 4B

 Big stress on the earth

 How can people be fed more efficiently?

 We need to rethink

18
Vertical Farming
 Grow kelp and shellfish

 Maximizes space

 Does not require irrigation

 No fertilization or run-off

 No pesticides

 No herbicides
Bren Smith - Executive Director: GreenWave
 No land & Owner of Thimble Island Ocean Farm

19
Vertical Farming
 Kelp is the 2nd fastest growing plant in the world

 Up to 2 feet a day!

 Kelp can have:

 More iron than red meat & more calcium than milk

 Mussels and scallops are packed with Omega-3

 A vertical farm the size of WA State:

 Could feed the world!

Bren Smith - Thimble Island Oyster Company

 Seaweed $6B global business (World Aquaculture Society Estimate)

20
Vertical Farming = Restorative Farming
 Kelp enables significant marine life
 Kelp are the trees of the ocean
 They help to deacidify the water and remove nitrogen
 Adult oysters can filter 30 - 50 gal. of water a day!
 Restorative farming could ultimately help the Orca population

21
Marine Cable
 Plastic cable is used today
 It degrades and sheds over time
 It can entangle significant marine life

Dead pregnant sperm whale in Sardinia

4/1/19. Had ingested 49 pounds of plastic

22
rCF Marine Cable
 Use carbon fiber as a cable
 Can be cleaned with high-pressure steam
 Does not shed
 Cannot entangle marine mammals

23
CEF3 Grant
 CRTC received CEF3 grant from WA State DOC
 Will purchase pultrusion machine
 Allows CRTC to make prototype cabling
 Proof of concept

 Customer tests

 Working with PNNL - Sequim

 Applying for grants
 Will need investors to fully scale

Advanced CLT Project

25
Mega-Trend
 The growing population will need shelter
 The global income gap will continue to grow:
 The need for economical housing will increase globally

 We need structures that:

 Go up quickly

 Are durable

 Are efficient

 Support multi-families

26
CLT’s
 Cross Laminated Timber
 Layers of wood boards
 Layers oriented 90◦

27
Thermal Modification
 Wood heated to about 400◦ F

 Oxygen free environment

 Removes sugars & lignin's
 Stabilizes wood - no warp or cupping
 Provides rot resistance
 Provides mildew and bug resistance

 More environmentally friendly

 vs. pressure treated lumber

28
Advanced CLT
 Thermal modification in CLT wall panel
 Enables use of less desirable species
 Coastal Western Hemlock

 Add carbon fiber strips to increase stiffness

 Makes for a very stout wall!
 CRTC patent pending process
 Working with the Port, WSU, UM & Tribes Carbon fiber strips
In full length of panel

29
Advanced CLT
 Beauty of wood - no drywall

 Quiet - noise mitigation

 Rot, bug & wind resistant

 Energy efficient - up to R32 in wall

 250 sq. ft. small home erected in 2 days

 1,800 sq. ft. - flat packs in 4 containers
 8 days to erect

30
Advanced CLT
 Multiple Applications:
 Portable or disaster housing
 Multi-family housing
 Schools with reconfigurable walls
 Small homes & off-grid housing
 Highly durable low-income housing
 Military housing - esp. tropical areas

31
Advanced CLT Investment
 Combination of Timber and Tech
 CRTC will do the initial development and proof of concept
 Mini CLT mill and thermal mod facility in the area will be required
 Applying for grants to develop
 Investors are needed in order to scale
 Huge global market
 $100M annual potential, scalable across US/globe

 Thermally modified wood also sold for flooring, siding & decking

32

Orthotic Springs Testimonial
I received my orthotic from the VA a week ago. I suffered a traumatic
injury on a US Navy ship in 1983 and was to the point of scheduling
amputation. Instead, for Fathers day, I took a walk with my 24 year old
Daughter for the first time ever. THANK YOU! - 06/21/19

34
Thank You
The CRTC Team
(we proudly have 5 military veterans on our team)
