RESEARCH PLAN (1A)

Required for All Projects

To be Submitted in IRC/SRC Before Experimentations Begins

Name: CHRIS IMMANUEL I. ARCASA Cluster: ILIGAN Category: TEAM

School: ILIGAN CITY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

School Address: GENERAL WOOD STREET,

MAHAYAHAY, ILIGAN CITY

Title of Project: PLASTICS: THE COMPONENT FOR Tel. No. 224-9964

BRICK MATERIAL

Project Adviser: NEL MARIE B. IGLUPAS:

The research plan must include the following:

A) Problem/s

1. Are the plastics feasible for making bricks?

2. Is the brick material produced comparable to commercial ones?

3. What type of plastic wastes material would produce the most high quality
brick?

4. Is the brick material produced durable enough for construction purposes?

B) Hypothesis/ Objectives

Null: The plastic waste materials cannot be a component in making an alternative

bricks.

The researchers are aiming to make an alternative bricks out of plastics and sand.
The produced bricks will be tested and will be compared to commercial ones to know if it
is good enough for construction purposes.
C) Methods/ Procedure

1. The Collection of Plastic Waste Materials

* One and a half (1.5) kilograms of plastic waste materials will be

collected from the homes of each researchers.

2. Cleaning and Drying of Plastics

* The plastics collected from the homes of the researchers will be cleaned

by being washed with tap water and will be dried up under the heat of the sun.

3. Fabrication of the Improvised Oven

After the improvised oven has been constructed the small pot will be

placed on the empty side of the improvised oven while 3L of tap water will be poured

into the small steamer of the improvised oven

4. Mixing the Sand and Plastic Waste Materials

* The One and a half (1.5) kilograms of plastic waste materials will be

divided into 4 types of different concentrations 50g, 100g, 150g, 200g and 3 trials for

each concentration will be conducted. The plastic waste materials will be placed inside

the pot of the improvised oven, and then the pot of the improvised oven will be covered
with the pot’s cap. Wait for 20 minutes until the plastics are liquefied and then mix in the

5g of sand. Using a stirring rod, mixed or stir the sand and plastic thoroughly.

5. Molding the Mixed Plastics and Sand

* When the plastic waste materials and sand is mixed thoroughly, using a

pot holder, hold the pot and then pour the mixture into the 19cm x 9cm x 9cmbrick

molder. Wait for 10minutes and more until the liquefied mixture turns into a solid before

taking out the plastic waste materials and sand mixture from the molder.

6. Testing of the Bricks

*The researchers will be having a multiple test for the bricks to know if it

is good enough for construction purposes, such as efflorescence test, durability test and

water absorption test. In the case of the efflorescence test a good quality brick should not

contain any soluble salts in it. If soluble salts are there, then it will cause efflorescence on

brick surfaces. To know the presence of soluble salts in a brick, place it in sea water for

24 hours and then dry it in shade. After drying, observe the brick surface thoroughly. If

there is any white or grey color deposits, then it contains soluble salts and not useful for

construction. The bricks will also be tested if it is durable enough. The bricks will be

dropped with different heights to know what certain height it will break. The bricks will

also be tested through water absorption test.
