CLOSED SOURCE

OBJECTIVES

• Know what is Closed Source.

• Examples of Closed Source Application.
• Pros and Cons of Closed Source.
• Issues to consider when acquiring software.
CLOSED SOURCE
• Closed source (or proprietary software) means computer
programs whose source code is not published. The source code is not
shared with the public for anyone to look at or change. Closed source is
not open source, but some software is neither, because open source also
implies the freedom to redistribute. Thus, one can sell software with
access to the source and freedom to modify it but not to redistribute it.
Most companies who sell their software for money make it closed source
so people cannot easily change it or copy it for free.
• Even some who give their software for free do not show the source code,
because they think it looks bad, or that somebody will change the
authors' names to their own (a kind of plagiarism) without making the
program better. Some programs called “freeware” are given away for
free, but they are not the same as free software that anyone can do
whatever they want with.
LICENSE
• Proprietary
When dealing with proprietary software, the owner of the application
grants access to his product via an end-user license agreement (also known
as EULA). This type of agreement details what your customers are entitled to do
when using your software, and in which context they are able to use the
application. However, users do not own the software itself. Before using an
application, the customer will need to agree to the Terms & Conditions of the
EULA.
THE ADVANTAGES OF
USING PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE:

• The software offers a stable system support if it fails or malfunction.

• The software is safe and guaranteed to be safe from dubious threats like
programming bugs and viruses thus providing ease of mind for the user.
• The software is easier to install and used as the production is planned and
extensive research is carried out to ensure users purchase only the best.
• Furthermore, free updates and latest information on the software are usually
provided to the user.
• Standard Software (e.g. Microsoft Office)
THE DISADVANTAGES OF
USING PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE:

• High License Cost

• Cost for Consultants and Development
• Vendor-Lock-In
• Long-term Binding
• Own Development not possible
ARGUMENTS
• Why do you think Majority of Homes and Business use
proprietary software?
• Is it better to buy proprietary software or open-source
software?
• Can we consider freeware as an open-source
software?
