Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
For this lesson, I will review what we have learned from our reading of “Hatchet” during class. We will
discuss some of the obstacles taken place that has affected the character up until this point in the book. After
the class discuss, I will introduce the activity of writing an ending of our own. I will present them with an
example of a different ending to a common story we have previously read. I will have a student volunteer to
read my own ending from the IWB. I will then allow the students time for the activity. Each student will work
individually to write an ending to the book using characters and dialogue using R.A.C.E.

The students will pair and share their stories with a table partner before beginning their final draft. After
each student has finished, I will introduce them to the KidPub website by exploring different submissions as a
class. We will then begin the process of publishing our own stories. I will assist in publishing to the website if
needed and also instruct the students to search for their partners published writing on KidPub to read again. I
will have a list of the students ending titles listed on the IWB for other classmates to view and read their
friends’ published works. By using KidPub, I am reaching a LoTi level 5.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Students will work with laptops or class computers to complete their writing samples. I will also use the IWB
during the introduction of the lesson.

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students are collaborating with their partners to give feedback before publishing on KidPub.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Although students are using information and characters
from the book, they are able to use their creativity to create a new ending to a story based on their
own imagination.

c. Higher-order thinking: Students are analyzing previous events from the book to make their own
prediction to the ending of the book. They are applying the knowledge they gained from the analysis to
create a new product that is their own.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: After
publishing their work to KidPub, teachers and fellow students will read and give feedback to the
students about their published writings.

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Talk to text speech: for students who may have difficulty writing.
Students are able to work with a peer during the activity by sharing their ideas
Students are able to collaborate about their published writings without presentation.
Promotes creativity for each student

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: Before publishing our works, we will review
internet safety and choose our “published” names to make it fun for them as well as protect their personal
information. Each child will have a consent/waiver signed for using the internet and publishing works.

Reflective Practice: I believe this lesson will be beneficial to the students because the book gives the students
a kid of baseline to begin their writing while also allowing them to incorporate their own design for an ending.
KidPub is offered as an additional resource for the students to use during writing as well as look back at their
work. I believe it gives them a sense of pride to see their work published so that they may share their ideas
with their parents and other students too. To further extend the lesson, I would invite the students to read
their work aloud in the library during author share time.
