Subrack Type
 The BSC subracks can be classified into the following
types:
 GMPS--GSM Main Processing Subrack

 GEPS--GSM Extended Processing Subrack

 GTCS--GSM TransCoder Subrack

 Generally, both the GMPS and GEPS are referred to the

BM subrack, and the GTCS is referred to as the TC
subrack

Copyright © 2008 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. All rights reserved. Page21
Configuration Modes of Subracks
 The BSC subracks support the following configuration
modes:
 BM/TC separated-- In BM/TC separated configuration mode, the
BSC consists of the GMPS/GEPS and GTCS. The GTCS can be
configured on the BSC side or on the MSC side based on the OM
path between the GMPS and the GTCS

 BM/TC combined-- In BM/TC combined configuration mode, the TC

function is performed by the GMPS or GEPS. In BM/TC combined
configuration mode, the TC function is performed by the GDPUX

Type of PCU
 There are two types of PCU: built-in PCU and
external PCU
 The external PCU is an independent network element that
provides PS service processing functions. It communicates
with the BSC over the Pb interface, and communicates with
the SGSN over the Gb interface
 The built-in PCU is the GDPUP, which provides PS service
processing functions. The GDPUP is configured in the
GMPS/GEPS

In BM/TC separated (built-in PCU) configuration mode, the GMPS must be configured with
the GTNU, GSCU, GGCU, GXPUM, GDPUP, and GEPUG. The GDPUX, GXPUT,
GEIUB/GOIUB/GEHUB/GFGUB/GOGUB, and GEIUT/GOIUT are optional boards.
When the number of TRXs to be supported is greater than 256, a pair of GXPUTs must be
configured in the GMPS.

TDM Switching Subsystem
 The Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) switching subsystem
provides circuit switched domain (CS) switching for the system

 The TDM switching subsystem consists of the GTNU, GDPUX,

interface boards, backplane in the subrack, and interconnected
cables between subracks.

TDM Access Bearer Unit
 The TDM access bearer unit provides TDM bearers for the services on
the A, Abis and Ater interface. Each board has the same hardware
structure that contains backplane and sub board. By loading software,
the functions of A, Abis, Ater, and Pb interface can be enabled

GE Switching Subsystem
 The Gigabit Ethernet (GE) switching subsystem performs GE switching
of signaling and O&M interface, packet message switching
 The GSCU performs operation and maintenance of its subrack and
provides GE switching for the other boards in the same subrack

Service Processing Subsystem
 The hardware entity of the service
processing subsystem is the
GDPUX board and GDPUP board

 The number of configured

GDPUPs and the number of
configured GDPUXs depend on
the traffic volume of CS services
and PS services

 Works in resource pool mode

CS Service Processing Subsystem
 The GDPUX processes CS services. In different
configuration modes of the BSC subracks, the GDPUX
performs different functions:
 In BM/TC separated configuration mode, the GDPUX configured in
the GMPS/GEPS performs IP packet-TRAU conversion and
forwarding; the GDPUX configured in the GTCS performs voice
coding/decoding and rate matching

 In BM/TC combined configuration mode, the GDPUX performs IP

packet-TRAU conversion, voice coding/decoding, and rate
matching

CS Service Processing Subsystem
 The following takes the transmission of CS traffic signals
from the BSC to the MGW as an example. When IP
transmission is used on both the Abis interface and the A
interface, the CS DSP module processes traffic signals as
follows:

PS Service Processing Subsystem
 The GDPUP processes PS services
 When the HDLC transmission or IP transmission is
used on the Abis interface, the external PCU cannot
be used. In other words, the BSC must be configured
with the GDPUP to process PS services

PS Service Processing Subsystem
 The following takes the transmission of PS signals from
the BSC to the SGSN as an example. When IP
transmission is used on the Abis interface and on the Gb
interface, the service processing procedure of the PS DSP
module is as follows:

Service Control Subsystem
 The components of the BSC service control subsystem are
as follows:
 GXPUM and GXPUT configured in the GMPS/GEPS

 GBAM/GOMU

 GSCU configured in the GTCS

Interface Processing Subsystem
 Physically the BSC interface processing subsystem consists of the
interface boards and the GXPUM.

 Logically, the BSC interface processing subsystem consists of the

following units: Abis interface processing unit, A interface processing
unit, Ater interface processing unit, Pb interface processing unit, Gb
interface processing unit, and Cb interface processing unit.

Interface Processing Subsystem
 Traffic Processing
 GEIUB/GOIUB supports 256 TRXs

 GEIUTsupports 3840 speech channels

 GOIUT supports 7168 speech channels

 GEIUP/GOIUP supports 3840 16Kbps PCICs

 GEIUA supports 960 speech channels

 GOIUA supports 1920 speech channels

Clock Subsystem
 The BSC clock subsystem consists of the GGCU and the
clock processing units in each subrack.

 The clock subsystem provides working clock for the BSC

and the reference clock for the BTS.

 The BSC can use two clock sources:

 BITS clock and line clock

 Each clock source either has one backup source or does not
have any backup
