TRAINING METHODS AND CONTENT

Training Location

The selection of 5 training location were based

on the consideration of the following factors:
(i) the economic potential of local tourism
industry;
(ii) the uniqueness of local sites and culture;
(iii) the availability and readiness of the local
network and partners in the region.

Method

The training covered duration of three days in-

class training at each selected vocational
schools located in each local destinations.
With respect to training in Papua Barat, before
the reguler training of students IDNusa held a
3 days training of trainers (“ToT”) with a
different modul for trainers that is
systematically similar but more detail and
comprehensive. ToT is held before the reguler
training in the hope that the training
participants could be the mentors and
facilitator for the local training participants.

Participants Selection
In 4 training locations (exclude Papua) the
selection of participants is solely conducted by
the School teacher/principal where the
training is held.
With respect to Papua Barat IDNusa team
collaborate with a local education NGO,
Kitongbisa, that is already have an
establishment of learning center. The selection
of participant in Papua Barat is held by the local
partners with several core criteria between
IDNusa team and Kitongbisa. Basic criteria for
ToT participants are:
1) Local that is domicile in the selected tourist
destination (for Papua Barat as an example

permanently domicile in Papua)

LESSON LEARNED & FUTURE DEVELOPMENT

Following the successful completion of IDNusa
Training batch 1, below are the following
improvement that is necessary for the better
implementation of the Project:
1. There is a need to create a detail criteria
for participant and to review selection
together with the local facilitator.s In location
where the selection is left to the
school/teacher without much guidance, the
outcome of participants job readiness varies.
Most of the participants from SMK however
appears to be uninterested or is not ready to
receive the training or to jumpstart to work in
tourism. In Papua location where the team has
communicate and discussed the selection
process the participant readiness and results
are much higher than the other 4 locations.
Based on the training feedback, an ideal
Participants should be local that have at least a
track record of tourism, or, at least ready
within 6 months to jumpstart their career as an
entrepreneur in the field.
2. It is beneficial to have a strong local
partner. The training in Papua Barat could be
more effective and cost efficient due to the
partnership of the training with strong local
NGO in education who knows the correct
approach and method to outreach and
empower local and stakeholders. In addition
to this, the local partners could help in
facilitating post training mentorship and
assistance.
3. In some region Training of Trainers is
needed. Depends on the regional and cultural
analysis, some if not most of the remote areas
will be in scarcity of mentors and facilitators,
which are an important element in the
training.
4. Modul and curriculum improvement is
needed. Adding subject like English for
hospitality and environmental and cultural
knowledge will boost the participants
knowledge and confidence in providing their
services, particularly to foreign tourists.
