1. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
Earthwork of more than one foot is considered as Excavation.

2.POTENTIAL HAZARDS PRESENT

1) Soil Collapse/Land sliding

2) Fall from Height
3) Electrical Shock due to contact of live underground cable, if any
4) Damage/puncture of the underground pipelines, if any

3. LOCATION:

Wherever earth is digged beyond 1 foot,.

4. PRE-ACTIVITY MEETINGS: -

The contractors and or the Site representative designated to supervise the job will inform the EHS leader/
Facility leaders before starting the work. They will inform about the High Risk Operations. The person
(EHS/Facility) designated to supervise the job, will have the overall responsibility of all the safety measures
being implemented.
The following points will be discussed in the Pre-activity meeting:-
 Hazard recognition & Preventive Measures
 Training Requirements
 Work plan & scheduling
 Equipments required
 Emergency procedure

5. WORK PERMITS: -

Excavation Work Permit signed by EHS / Facility Personnel be taken after a thorough review of our
safety measures and equipment on site.

6.SAFE WORKING PROCEDURE: -

Following check points are ensured where the activity is being done:
 The utilities in the area like gas pipeline, electrical cables, sewer, data cables identified
 The concerned electrical or other service lines isolated & LOTO applied
 The shoring or trenching shield required & provided to prevent soil shift.
 Check for any overhead obstruction.
 Proper ventilation & lighting available/provided.
 The area barricaded & caution board displayed.
 Avoid the personnel approach to the edge of the excavating pit.
 The electrical equipments earthed & cable protected from damage.
 The proper scaffold/ladder provided & tied at the top.
 The standby person deputed to provide help in emergency.
 The safety belt used & lifeline anchored above the working level.
 The required Personal Protective Equipment (Hand gloves, Helmet, Safety glasses, Ear plugs, Safety
Shoes).
 The employees working in excavation are trained & training records given to EHS.

7. EMERGENCY PROCEDURE: -

 In case of any external emergency in surrounding areas,

1. Shutdown the operation safely
2. Move towards the safe assembly point.
 In case of any internal emergency like injury to personnel working due to landslide, electric shock etc.,:-
1. Standby person to help the victim to come out of the pit
2. If not possible, Emergency Control CenterIf medical assistance is required, Medical Center.
3. The process owner and EHS staff be informed at the earliest possible.

8. NECESSARY PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:

Rubber hand gloves, Helmet, Safety glasses, Safety shoes, Earplugs.

9. SPECIALISED TRAINING REQUIREMENT: -

The operators are trained in the process as well as in the High risks involved.

10. PERIODIC VERIFICATION OF PREOCEDURE: -

Work instructions and safety procedures are reviewed annually
