DEPARTMENT: Mechanical Engineering

COURSE CODE-COURSE NAME: ME-405 Instrumentation & Measurements CR: 2-0

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The course will cover the fundamental concept of instrumentation, measurement
systems and signal processing/conditioning involved in different types of process including the basic
principles of a measuring system including various methods of sensing, instrument types and
characteristics, display and recording elements and their applications in measurement of temperature,
flow, pressure, force, level, displacement and other common physical parameters.
TEXT AND MATERIALS:
TEXTBOOK:
 Process Control and Instrumentation Technology (8th Edition)
By Curtis D Johnson
REFERENCE MATERIAL:
 Measurement and Instrumentation Principles by Alan S Morris
 Introduction to Mechatronics and Measurement Systems
by Michael B Histand, David G Alciatore

PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOME:

The CLOs designed in this course will target upon the following PLOs;
PLO-1: Engineering knowledge: An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and
engineering to the solution of complex engineering problems.
PLO-4: Investigation: An ability to design and conduct experiments as well as to analyze, interpret
data and synthesis of information for complex problems.
PLO-3: Design/ Development of Solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems
and design systems, components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate
consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
CLO-1: Select the proper instrumentation for a particular physical quantity (e.g., pressure and
temperature) (C2-Cognitive Comprehension)
CLO-2: Plan and carry out measurements of physical quantities commonly encountered by
mechanical and mechatronic engineers using common laboratory instruments. (C6-Cognititive
Create)
CLO-3: Develop simple computer programs for the collection/ analysis of experimental data. (C4-
Cognitive Analysis)

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS:
In mechanical engineering practice respective to industry, Instrumentation & Measurement
are backbone of any industrial process. The course directly facilitates students with the applied
knowledge necessary for their industrial expense.
