- AIM AND LAYOUT OF THIS HANDBOOK

The aim of this handbook is to provide assistance in carrying out all

the operations connected with this machine: sale, transport, handling,
installation, assembly, use, maintenance, repair and demolition.
Particular emphasis has been placed on operations that may affect the
safety of the operator. All possible residual risks are also highlighted.
The instructions given in this handbook should be considered
complementary to, but not a substitute for, the safety rules and
specifications shown on the machine and in the enclosures (from other
sources).
Since certain components are made specifically for certain machines

- FIELD OF APPLICATION

ERO® s.r.l. reserves the right to modify its glue guns for technical
reasons at any time, without being obliged to update the handbooks
immediately.

The electronic gluing system is used for the cold application of

glue on solid or corrugated board.

When using this method of gluing, the machine accurately distributes the
glue at speeds of up to 350 metres per minute.
Accuracy and high quality is ensured at all machine speeds (up to 350
metres per minute, with gluing points of at least 60 mm) and negligible
maintenance is required.

If the machine has not been used for a long time, flush the system with
water to remove any glue or deposits. Preferably, flush with any mineral
oil instead of water.

Do not wash the system with solvent or any other product that
would cause the components to deteriorate.

- USE NOT ALLOWED

The machine must not be used for purposes other than those specified
in the section entitled Field of Application.

ERO® s.r.l. declines all liability for damage connected by inappropriate

or careless operation by untrained personnel, or a qualified operator who
has performed operations on the machine that do not comply with the
recommendations given in this handbook and attached documentation.

- INSTRUCTIONS FOR OPERATORS

- POINTS TO BEAR IN MIND

All personnel using or servicing the system must be properly

trained, aware of the hazards and possess the experience to carry out
the tasks described. They must be able to interpret the contents of this
handbook correctly and perform the checks and inspections safely and
scrupulously. All operators must have completed a specific training
course or have had sufficient experience with similar machines.

The manufacturer has eliminated all general risks, but clearly certain
operations involve intrinsic hazards that cannot be eliminated (see
ACCIDENT PREVENTION). In order to prevent damage or injury, we
advise the end user to inform the operators of any residual risks
connected with use of the machine.

Personal protection equipment required by law in the country of use

and other means made available by the employer must be worn or
used at all times.

The machine must never be operated by physically or mentally

disabled persons, even if they work in compliance with this
handbook and the annexes. If the degree of infirmity allows, it is the
employer who assumes all liability resulting from such a choice.

The machine must not be operated by anyone taking alcohol or

drugs.

- REQUIREMENTS FOR OPERATORS

The end user or employer is legally liable for all damage or injury
caused or suffered by personnel he has authorised to use the machine.

Each operator must possess the specific skills required to carry

out the tasks assigned to him/her. The operator shoulders all risks
connected with the job. It is not possible here to test or train everyone
involved in running or servicing the machine.

Any operator, within the limits of his skills, is authorised to run the
machine at his own discretion, provided that he is fully aware of what he
is doing, he does not deliberately attempt to inflict injury upon himself, he

- ACCIDENT PREVENTION AND SAFETY MEASURES

- GENERAL RULES

The contents of this handbook must not be taken as a substitute for

the safety rules and specifications for installation and operation affixed to
the machine, nor the safety rules in force in the country of installation or
rules based on common sense.

The system is designed in compliance with energy saving

principles to avoid wastage and dissipation.

The system has been built to comply with the most rigorous
accident prevention rules and is equipped with safety devices to
protect the various components and the operators.
For obvious reasons it is not possible to predict all the possible machine
layouts and installations, therefore it is up to the end user to inform the
manufacturer of any particular installation conditions.

The manufacturer declines all liability for failure to comply with the
installation instructions and for any inline systems before or after this
machine.
The system must not be installed out of doors or in adverse
environmental conditions, such as excessively high or low
temperatures, unless specifically requested in the order and approved by
the manufacturer.

The manufacturer cannot be held liable for damage or injury caused if

the safety devices are not used (by passed) or tampered with.

The manufacturer is not liable for disposal of the products involved

in the use of the machine or production, such as glue, used lubricant,
washing water, cardboard and dust. The end user is required to arrange
personally for disposal of potentially toxic waste, according to the rules in
force in the country of installation.

N.B. The same rules apply to demolition of the machine.

Use and maintenance handbook
GLUING SYSTEM FOR FLEXOFOLDERGLUER

When the gluer is running normally - assessed individually and serviced

properly - it generates an acoustic pressure (noise) level equal to 80
dB(A), which means it is totally harmless for the operator.

The end user must only use original spares and fit them as
instructed.
If parts from the trade are used, the respective manufacturers are liable
for the same.

- SAFETY DEVICES

Maintenance must always be carried out with the system shut down and
the power supply switched off. If it is necessary to move any part of
the system, the operator must make sure everything is safe and
assumes all liability for what he does.

The end user must ensure that all the operators are properly
instructed, particularly as regards hazardous operations and areas. If
necessary, notices or other suitable means of warning must be provided
to prevent damage or injury.
All warning notices, such as Hot Surfaces, Live Parts and Machine
Running, must be kept clean and clearly legible. The same applies to
all instruments and safety devices.

Standard machines are not equipped to operate where there is the

risk of fire or explosion. Flame- and explosion-proof equipment is only
supplied on request.

Use and maintenance handbook
GLUING SYSTEM FOR FLEXOFOLDERGLUER

- HAZARDOUS AREAS

When the system is in operation it is a potential hazard, so the

operator must not do anything not strictly connected with normal running.

By necessity the system contains sharp points and edges, so the

operator should take great care not to lose his balance. The
consequences of normal operations or sudden movements must never
be underestimated.

Glues and solvents – particularly glue containing ammonia – are

highly toxic if breathed in. Always follow the rules specified on the
product or by the manufacturer of the solvent or glue used, and use a
mask if necessary.

Any items not forming part of the machine, and positioned on it, such
as spanners, screwdrivers and bolts, must be removed before starting
up the machine.

IMPORTANT: Switching on the compressed air system can cause

certain parts of the machine to move, even when the machine itself
is switched off. Always keep to the safety distance.

Ed. 3-2013 Copyright ERO® s.r.l. (BS) Italy 13

Use and maintenance handbook
GLUING SYSTEM FOR FLEXOFOLDERGLUER

The operator must not wear clothes with wide sleeves, laces or
belts, and must not stand anywhere near the machine in bare feet or
wearing wet shoes.

The system must be cleaned using suitable means and detergents

that do not damage the components in any way. The machine must
never be sprayed with water.

If it is necessary to lift by hand buckets or other loads weighing over

25 kilos, it is advisable to enlist help or use suitable hoisting means.

The machine is wired professionally and guaranteed safe and

efficient. Operators are required to report any defects or deterioration
due to wear or ageing so that safety conditions can be restored as soon
as possible.

N.B. Temporary or makeshift repairs must never be made.

Unqualified personnel must never be allowed to make repairs.

Mains connections must always be done professionally in compliance

with laws in force in the country of installation.
The manufacturer cannot be held liable for any inline systems before or
after the machine.

Use and maintenance handbook
GLUING SYSTEM FOR FLEXOFOLDERGLUER

During installation, great care must be taken when negotiating ramps

since the centre of gravity is fairly high, which increases the risk of
tipping up. Remember there is also a container full of glue.

Once the machine has been positioned, it must be levelled. Check that
the connecting piping is not under tension or affected by sudden
movements.

The glue tanks must be filled very carefully.

Take great care in the area around the base supporting the glue
tank since it may be slippery.

- LIFTING AND HANDLING

The packaging and protection of the machine depends on its

destination. Suitable lifting and handling means, such as lugs, legs
and brackets, are provided when necessary. Qualified handlers,
hookup men or crane operators should always be used.

Road and other transportation must be performed using means and

methods to protect the electronic and other components from impact,
moisture, vibration and so on.

The machine must be lifted using suitable means able to support the
weight of the various components.

The cables or ropes must not damage or affect the machine in any
way. Rags or cardboard can be used for a padding if necessary.

The angle of inclination of the cables must never be very great. In

theory the cables should be vertical. Never exceed an angle of 45°.

N.B. When lifting the system, make sure it does not swing as this
may well damage the machine or cause injury.

The packaging materials (wood, nails, cardboard, cellophane,

staples, adhesive tape, straps, ropes, etc.) can cut or cause other
injuries if not handled with care. All packaging materials must be
removed using suitable means and not left accessible to incompetent
persons or children. The same goes for equipment used for removing
the packaging, such as scissors, hammers, nippers and knives.

4 CHANNELS CONTROL PANEL FOR CASEMAKER

AV Runner/4 automatic standard control panel for high pressure gluing

system, with CALS and PQC integrated functions.

The 4 channel standard control panel for high pressure gluing system is an high technology control panel that
has been studied to allow users and operators to easily program and work. This panel is designed for precise
glue dispensing on high-speed casemaker/flexo foldergluer machine. This smart controller looks in a different
way at the boxes. In fact it is able to check conditions and possible problems before they happen. The system
determines the position of the glue in a different way, and can compensate machine speed problems during
the glue application. The control panel based on a self-learning system in order to reduce operator
interference.
This, also thanks to the CALS and PQC integrated functions. The software inside the control panel is
specifically studied for the corrugated field. Low-pressure pneumatic glue distributors and even more precise
high-pressure electromagnetic glue distributors can be connected to this controller.
IMPORTANT: in order to get the best performance from the system, the gluing station must be
installed from “above” or “underneath”, on the flap side of your casemaker/flexo foldergluer machine.

CALS AND PQC FUNCTIONS

CALS.
Continuative Auto Learning System. Thanks to this function, the operator does not have to introduce the
measures in the control panel any more. In fact, thanks to the AUTOMATIC “gluer mode”, the control panel
can set the measures and adjust the gluing according to the flap size fully automatically.
The complete system is able to compensate the slipping of the boxes on belts automatically. The system is

HIGH PRESSURE ERO® GLUE PUMP

The high pump used in this system has a pressure ratio of 1:8, so if it is supplied with compressed air at 4,5 bar, it
can dispense glue at 36 bar. It comes with twin-cylinders to prevent pressure drops during piston inversion. When
the first piston is near to the end of its race but it has not finished yet, the second piston starts its race. This
prevents any leaks. The solenoid valves of the motor piston are piloted by an electronic board that controls their
movement. It is advisable to check the state of the piston gaskets at least once a month. A small quantity of glue
leaking out is quite normal, but if the quantity is excessive, contact our technical service. It is important during
inspection to lubricate the pistons through the intakes using a standard pump.

The system’s flow regulator has a pressure ratio of 1:7. It is fed by the
proportioning valve at 1.8 to 5 bar, depending on the speed of the
machine. This means the glue pressure range is 12.6-35 bar. No
particular maintenance is required but it is important to inform our
technical service if glue leaks from the hole marked X on the drawing.
When you need to close the stop valve, refer to the diagram on the right.

Important: This must always be done by a qualified

person because there is the risk of injury if the

- PHOTO-EYE
A complete photo-eye is installed as standard on the glue station directly.

1
Trimer for setting

A special function can set the photo-eye in difficult work condition.

Please follow the procedure to set the photo-eye: position the box at 5 mm or more under the photo-eye.
Press the trimer and set it according to the reading of the photo-eye.

A second photo-eye as standard is usually installed on the station or in the middle of the machine. The
second photo-eye is installed as standard as double check. If the first photo-eye is stopped by a trim or
something else, the second one advises a problem is occurred.

- OPERATING THE SYSTEM

PREPARING THE SYSTEM FOR OPERATION

Before running the machine, it is necessary to carry out a series of
important checks to make sure it is in proper working order.

- Check that there are no deposits on the gluer filter.

- Check that everything is ready to start up the system and check all
the other in-line machines.

- Check that the photocells and all the glue gun connectors are
connected properly to the electronic programmer.

- Check the compressed air pressure is high enough for the various
components to operate.

- Check that the correct gluing start and end values have been
entered. (see INSTRUMENTATION)

IMPORTANT: It is up to the end user to ensure that the wiring complies

with legal requirements. ERO® s.r.l. cannot be held liable for
noncompliant or incorrect mains connections.

- MAINTENANCE

- GENERAL RULES
- The maintenance schedule referred to in this handbook and its
attachment must be followed at all times. Other operations not
described are considered as EXTRAORDINARY MAINTENANCE
OR REPAIR and must only be done by qualified personnel sent by
the Manufacturer, who cannot be held liable for damage to the
machine or injury if these conditions are not met.

- Servicing and lubrication must be done with the machine

stopped and the power off, unless indicated otherwise. This work
must always be done with extreme care.

- Never mix different types and makes of glue. The same goes for
solvents and detergents, which would cause undesired effects if
mixed.

- Always use the means of protection provided by the employer,

such as plastic gloves for handling glue and solvents or safety
goggles.

- Never perform makeshift repairs. Only original spare parts must

be used. Even when the machine is switched off, it is potentially
hazardous.

- Service engineers must always remember there are sharp

edges and corners.

- The service engineer must always report promptly any

problems such as dripping, abrasion and fraying. He must then
restore normal operating conditions or arrange for this to be done
by someone else.

- It is good practice to clean the control panel and the rest of the
machine. A greasy or dirty handle is dangerous.

- Check the mains cables and sheathing for damage.

N.B. Cleaning must always be done with extreme care. When using 24 h
compressed air, always wear a mask, safety goggles and leather
gloves.
Always make sure no one else is standing near the machine as they
risk being hit by materials been blown about.

USEFUL HINTS
Washing the system.

During long periods of inactivity, it is good practice to wash the system to prevent the system from thickening. To
do this, proceed as follows:
a) Replace the glue tank with one full of warm water.
b) Perform the manual test using the programmer at frequency 0.
c) All the glue glue guns should be cleaned.
d) When resuming operation, perform the same operation using glue.

Depressurising the system.

The glue circuit must be depressurised before servicing the glue glue guns or the system.
To do this, proceed as follows:
a) Close the main compressed air tap (2).
b) Open the discharge tap (1).
c) The pump stops after about two cycles, which means the system is no longer pressurised.
d) Perform the manual test at frequency 0 to ensure the system is fully depressurised.
e) To pressurise the system, close the discharge tap (1) and then open the compressed air tap (2).
