THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

TVL- Home Economics is designed to develop students' skills useful

for livelihood projects at home. It provides a curriculum that is a

combination of core courses required for all SHS students and specialized

hands on courses that meet the strand hour requirement and competency

based assessment of TESDA. Students in this strand undergo TESDA

Assessment for National Certificates (NCs) that increase their employability

after graduation from SHS. They can also take degree courses in college

especially those which management, nutrition food technology, food

management and interior design.

There are plenty of career options with this track. After finishing the Home

Economics program in Senior high school, every student who undergo in this strand has

given the following options right after they graduate in Senior high or even right after

college. There are twelve samples of career options which are Baker, Barista, Caregiver,

chambermaid, Chef, Clerk, Hospitality manager, Interior designer, Make-up artist,

Nutritionist, Dietitian and Stylist.

Whatever career job you may go through, no matter how hard it is as long as you

love what you’re doing then you’ll always be happy on it. Majority of the students
nowadays wants to have work, to earn money immediately at their young age. But

“Work” isn’t just a work itself, it requires determination, passion and most of especially

skills. There are just few companies that don’t require too much skill as long as you can

do what they require you to do. This is why Department of Education builds K-12

program which has Academic and Tech-Voc track where students can early develop their

skills about some things. This program helps a lot of students who undergo in Technical-

Vocational and Livelihood track. And through this program, those fresh graduates can

now apply to some hiring companies having integrity and bringing the knowledge and

skills on themselves as they go through their wonderful journey.

According to Cabuenas,J.V(2018), less than a quarter of Philippine

employers are open to hire fresh graduates of the K-12 Program and still

consider a college Diploma a key factor to employment Jobstreet

Philippines and according to the latest report of Jobstreet Philippines only

24 ℅ of the Philippine employers are willing to hire fresh graduates of the

K-12 Program.

K-12 Education system based on Marriage,R.(2018) unlike other

countries and of school examination system such as the level in the

globally recognized international baccalaureate Diploma that demonstrate

their readiness for College work.

they want to become and knowing that in reaching their dreams, there are

a lot of challenges and failures for sure, how did they come up with it and

students of Home Economics strand that don't know yet or have no idea

about this strand even though there's an orientation before the school year

starts. Some of them entered this strand may because it was their family's

choice or they may be influenced to choose it by their friends. But this

students through the living experiences of the life of the H.E graduates in

the workplace and their way of coping stress they've used to do. Based on

the students' experiences nowadays, they are stressed with the projects and

expenses in the school. Especially they're H.E students that are so stressed

to budget their money when they're having their laboratory.

Through the motivating and inspirational stories of the H.E

graduates, a lot of H.E students will be inspired to do more good things, to

do their part as a student and also to be able to motivate themselves in

making their ultimate dreams despite of the challenges that they may

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Literature

According to the research study of Murray, A.(2012) TVL(Technical Vocational

and Livelihood) track also invests primarily on skills that can ran gain you requisite

COCs (Certificate of Competency) and NCs (National Certifications) which would e

essential when looking for better career opportunities in agriculture electronics and trade.

This also important when applying abroad where the skill you gain would prepare you as

you gain the workforce.

Foreign Studies

Based on the research study of Mcaulizze, N.I (2015), there are identity of option

facing final-year student from graduate programs to work abroad to further study.

Whether you've always known what you want to do after finishing your degree or are

only recently thinking about it. It's important to know what all your options are and what

will work for best for you. There is a basic choice: Work or further study. But even within

those you have a number of paths so it's important to figure out which fits with where you

want to go in life.

United States' basic education system according to Washington,R.(2015) varies

from state to state, similar to Philippines' SHS curriculum. There is no definite track as

this is left to individual state and their school districts to decide. The majority of those

who choose academic track are students who plans to proceed to college. There are still
stigma in selecting technical-vocational and other courses as these are seen by many as

the course for poor performing/problematic students.

The research study of Washington, R. relates to this research study because it

discusses the situation of US Education System about Home Economics strand/Tech-

Voc . It indicates that every people in U.S seen Tech-Voc as being taken by the poor

performing students. It was very sad of knowing this situation of H.E strand in U.S Every

person have their individual skills. As long as it's your desire then go for it, do not ever

consider the sayings of the other students as long as you do good to achieve your dreams.

Based on the research of McWilliams,J. (2016) Work of Home economists from the

United States with international visitors has clearly had an impact on families bilaterally.

Perhaps the greatest globally has resulted globally has resulted from AHEA/AAFCS

sponsorship, beginning in 2015 of hundreds who sought to do graduate study in the U.S

Recipients have come from a wide variety of countries to study in various institutions and

many returned home to take leadership options.

This research study by Mcaulizze,N. I relates to this study because it talks about the

importance of choosing the right path of the students, which option fits their personal

desires and skills like the path or the life of H.E graduates being studied in this research,

they've followed the desires of their and most of them became successful.

Local Studies

According to the research study of Nelz, Jay on March 27, 2016. The K-12 Program

aims to provide specialized training for the students in their selected field of expertise

including Information technology, Accountancy Business and management, TVL and

Humanities and Social Sciences. However some Senior High School graduating students

would not yet look for a job after their graduation admitting that the standard in applying

for a job position is too high.

So it would be better for the H.E students to continue their studies in college after

graduating Senior High. There will be a better opportunity or higher position that they

can apply soon if they're graduated in college.

Based on the research study of Peter,PM.(2016) The Home Economics offers

various specializations that can lead to livelihood projects at home. This strand aims to

give you job-ready skills that can help you in finding the right employment. After

graduation in this strand, You can have a future of becoming a baker, make-up artist,

stylist, therapist and many more. Various business set ups are also into this track like

dress shop, beauty salon, coffee shop, bakery, snack bar, food cart, handicrafts among

others.

This research relates to this study because it states the future works or professions

after graduating in Home Economics. And also if they've continue their studies in college

and finished it, their possible or ideal business set ups are being stated in this this related

study.

TVL- H.E according to the research study of Fortun, L. (2017) this strand grants

students the skills and knowledge necessary for livelihood projects at home. Taking

subjects in the Home Economics can also lead you to National Certifications that are

recognized by TESDA. Which means you can start working right after Senior High
School. The course teaches you various skills, including barbering, bartending, bread and

pastry production, fashion design, hair dressing and tourism promotion.

This research study of Fortun, L. relates to this study because it voice out the

meaning of Home Economics and also that this strand leads students to National

Certifications recognized by TESDA. It also tells the skills of the H.E students which the

H.E Graduates have and the future H.E students must have those in order to graduate and

become successful in life.
