 September 10, 2018
A CSAT (Comprehensive Student Assistance Team) meeting has held to discuss
students who are behind academically due to behavioral issues or excessive absences.
The meeting took place at Central Elementary with the CSAT team. The team
consisted of the principal, school psychologist, and school social worker. Team
members discussed their PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) strategies for
each student and what phase each student was in. They discussed strategies and
interventions that can be used to help students. I suggested using visual schedules or
visual supports for certain students and the team was receptive to my input and added
those interventions to their file. All students on the CSAT list were discussed and
strategies were updated.

 September 11, 2018

A SEIS (Special Education Information System) meeting was held to discuss updates
to the SEIS system. SEIS is the special education system used to input all IEP’s. The
meeting was introduced by the program specialist of special education preschool
program and was for special education preschool teachers at Central Elementary. The
program specialist presented the agenda and went over all the new updates to the SEIS
system. Everyone in attendance also discussed ideas to improve communication
between the program specialist and teachers. Everyone agreed on creating a google.doc
in effort to improve communication.

A staff meeting was held at Central Elementary for all staff certificated staff members.
The principal led the meeting and introduced the agenda, appointed a time keeper, and
a note taker. The meeting discussed upcoming events, information about field trips to
the Center of the Arts in Escondido, opening a STEM lab on campus, the Food for
Kids backpack program, and a presentation by special education teachers on visual
schedules and visual supports. Concerns were brought up at the end of the meeting and
everyone collaborated together to come up with solutions to those concerns.

The Escondido Union School Board Meeting was held at the Carilyn Gilbert Education
Center in Escondido. Before the meeting started, meeting roles where established and
explained. The agenda was presented, guidelines were established, and rules of conduct
for the meeting were explained. Speakers who wanted to address the board had to fill
out a form prior to the meeting and were given 3 minutes to address the board. The
meeting started with two speakers addressing the board, a teacher and a mother of a
middle school student. The teacher spoke about the removal of a new teacher at her
school. Without notice and without notifying his students, the new teacher was told he
would be moving to a new school starting the next day. The board gave her a “thank
you” when finished and invited the next person to the podium. The mother of a 6th
grader spoke about her daughter being bullied at school. The mother expressed
concerns and want reassurances that something would be done. When she finished, the
board members gave her a “thank you” and moved on to the agenda. The agenda
consisted of a presentation about the budget, voting on naming one of new buildings
after a former teacher, voting on new proposals, and board members discussing events
they attended throughout the week. At the end of the meeting, the facilitator informed
every one of the next board meeting and the meeting was over.

An assistive technology meeting was held at Central Elementary for a student whose
parents requested an assistive technology evaluation. The meeting was led by the
student’s teacher and the assistive technology specialist from the Escondido Union
School District. The student’s IEP team was in attendance and the team consisted of
the program specialist, student’s teachers, a general education teacher, and speech
pathologist. A phone meeting was conducted due to the parents’ availability. Parents
were concerned with their son’s language delays and requested an assistive technology
evaluation. The student’s teacher and assistive technology expert discussed the
student’s current progress with the parents while the program specialist took notes.
Everyone agreed that the student may benefit from assistive technology and to begin
the evaluation.

Special Education Preschool Diagnostic Team Meeting was held at Central Elementary
for all special education early childhood teachers, school psychologists, and speech
pathologists. The meeting was led by the 2 special education program specialists.
Central Elementary has 4 different special education preschool programs and a state
preschool on campus. Teachers were invited to observe the different classrooms and
discuss differences between the programs. After the observations, program specialists
updated team members on changes within the evaluation process. There was no agenda
nor were there time limits. Staff member wanted to address some concerns but there
was not enough time. Members were asked to write down their concerns for the next
meeting.

 September 21, 2018

I was invited to attend a meeting with the Assistant Superintendent of Special
Education and the Director of Special Education at the Carilyn Gilbert Education
Center in Escondido. The meeting was established to plan for an upcoming board
member presentation. The assistant superintendent went over state standards and
expectations. She also explained the budgeting process for different disabilities, the
growth in special education, and shared with me different reports the state requires
from school districts. The director of special education discussed the issues districts are
having with the number of lawsuits occurring every year. They both went over topics
to discuss in their presentation and asked for my input. I felt honored to take part in
such a big presentation and tried to help out in any way I could.

 September 27, 2018

Special Education Program Specialists conducted a meeting with all school
psychologist and speech therapist in the district to discuss current issues. The meeting
took place at Carilyn Gilbert Education Center in Escondido. The agenda was
presented online for everyone to access and the meeting began with a PowerPoint
presentation on a lawsuit that occurred over the summer. Program specialists wanted to
increase awareness of the number of lawsuits across districts and to remind everyone to
document parent interactions and all other important information. After the
presentation, school psychologist and speech pathologists were broken up into 2 groups
to discuss specific topics. Each group had their own agenda and time restraints for
topics.

Self-evaluation and reflection: What did you learn about leadership for yourself in the
context of others?
I felt fortunate to have attended different meetings around my district. I was exposed
to different leadership styles and was able to decipher what type of leadership characteristics I
wanted to possess. Through our courses, I have learned about running successful meetings but
never realized the amount of preparation is needed for a successful meeting. I learned the
importance of having an agenda and having time limitations. From my observations,
unsuccessful meetings were not productive, were disorganized, and failed to have agendas. I
appreciated administrators that acknowledged and listened to staff member and parent
concerns and allowed for collaboration to address those concerns. Through this field study, I
learned to keep an open mind and to collaborate when possible.

It was inspiring to see how administrators and teachers collaborated to help students
reach their potential. I was influenced by many administrators and learned the different rules
and regulations administrators deal with that teachers are unaware of. I learned to appreciate
administrators that handle pressures from teachers, parents, board members, and the state.
Their jobs are not easy and it takes special people to be able to handle all the different
pressures and still maintain a positive working environment for everyone. I loved being a part
of meetings that gave me the opportunity to make suggestions and be part of the decision
making. With this field study, I have a better understanding of administrative role and feel
confident in one day becoming one.
