CE 8501- DESIGN OF REINFORCED CEMENT CONCRETE ELEMENTS

TUTORIAL – UNIT -I

1. A singly reinforced concrete beam is of width 450mm and effective depth 715mm. It is
reinforced with 8Nos.20mm mild steel bars. Assuming M20 concrete, determine its moment
of resistance according to the working stress method. Determine also the stress in steel when
the beam is subjected to the above moment.

2. Design a rectangular RC beam in flexure and shear when it is simply supported on masonry walls 300
mm thick and 5 m apart (centre to centre) to support a distributed live load of 8 kN/m and a dead load
of 6 kN/m in addition to its own weight. Materials used are M20 grade of concrete and Fe 415 steel
bars. Adopt working stress method of design.

3. A simply supported RC beam 200 mm wide and 500 mm deep effective is reinforced with 3 nos of 16
mm dia bars. Find the moment of resistance of the beam. Effective span is 5 m. If the effective cover
is 40 mm, find the safe working load as well as the superimposed load. Use M 25 concrete and Fe 415
grade steel.

4. A rectangular beam has b=200mm, d=400mm if steel used is Fe 415 and grade of concrete is
M25. Find the steel required to carry a factored moment of 12kNm. Adopt limit state method
of design.

5. Find the area of tensile steel required for a beam of rectangular section 300 mm X 600 mm
overall depth to resist an ultimate moment of 170 kN.m. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
Adopt limit state method of design.

6. Design a reinforced rectangular beam of size 300 mm X 450 mm (effective) to resist an

ultimate bending moment of 250 kN.m, using M25 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade steel.

7. A rectangular beam is to be simply supported on supports of 230 mm thick. The clear span of
the beam is 6 m. The beam is to have a width of 300 mm. The characteristic super imposed
load is 12 kN/m. Using M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel, design the beam. Adopt limit state
method of design.

ASSIGNMENT- UNIT-I

1. A beam has a rectangular cross section of 350 mm X 700 mm overall with an effective cover of 50
mm. The beam is provided with 2# 28 mm diameter and 2 # 25 mm diameter bars as tension
reinforcement. Assuming M 20 grade concrete and Fe 250 steel, compute the stresses in concrete and
steel under a service load of moment of 125 kN.m.

2. Design a singly reinforced concrete beam of clear span 5 m to support a design working live load of
10 kN/m. Adopt M 20 grade concrete and Fe 415 HYSD bars. Also show the detailing of
reinforcements. Use working stress method of design.

3. A reinforced concrete beam 300 mm wide and 500 mm deep effective is reinforced with 4 # 16
mm diameter bars on the tension side. Determine the moment of resistance of the beam using
limit state method of design. Use M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel.

4. Design a singly reinforced beam to carry a live load of 14 kN/m. The clear span of the beam
is 5.5 m. The bearing at each end is 300 mm. Use M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel.
Adopt limit state method of design.

5. Determine the moment of resistance of a rectangular beam 300 mm wide and 500 mm deep
effective is reinforced with 4 # 20 mm bars on the tension side and 3 # 16 mm bars on the
compression side. Use M 30 grade concrete and Fe 415 HYSD bars.
