Quarter 2: Lewis Structure of Ions

Content Standard: The properties of ionic compounds in relation to their structure

Learning Competency: Determine the polarity of a bond based on the electronegativities of

the atoms forming the bond (STEM_GC11CB-IId-g-80)

Duration: Week 4: Day 3

I. Objective:

The learners will be able to:

1) Describe the valence electron
2) Apply the octet rule in determining the electron dot symbol
3) Draw the Lewis structure of some ions

II. Materials:
Powerpoint presentation
Periodic table of Elements

IV. Values Integration:

The properties of substances are directly influenced by their structure.

Change the shape of a wheel and it will not function the same way. Change
the shape of a water molecule, and it will behave differently. In order to
understand and predict the shapes of molecules, the first step to do is by
writing Lewis dot diagram. Likewise, in order to fully understand the behavior
of a child, a teacher has to scrutinize the factors affecting the personality of a
child-the nature and nurture.
V. Learning Tasks:

A. Activity:

1) The learners will be divided into five (5) or six (6) groups (depending on
you).
2) Each group will be given 10-15 elements (preferably, representative
elements only) by the teacher.
3) Let the students determine the elements on the periodic table.
4) Have the students answer the following guide questions:
4.1. Determine the number of valence electrons
4.2 Find out which group (column) your element is in.
4.3 Write the element symbols of the given elements.
4.4 Starting at the right, draw four (4) electrons, or dots, counter-
clockwise around the element symbol.
4.5 Check your work using your periodic table.

B. Analysis

1) Let the learners observe and analyze the presented periodic table.
2) The learners will be given five (5) minutes to answer the guide
questions.
3) The learners will be encouraged to brainstorm and work
collaboratively.
4) The learners will be asked to write their observations on manila
paper.
5) Each group will be given 3-5mins to present their work in front of the
class.

C. Abstraction

1) The teacher will verify the information generated from the groups.
2) The teacher will encourage the learners to ask queries and
misconceptions about the topic will also be addressed.
3) Additional information that would deepen the discussion would also
be discussed.
4) The teacher will underscore the following information as follows:
 To draw the dot diagram of an atom, count the valence
electrons, write the symbol of the atom, place dots around the
atom one at a time-top, bottom, left, and right and once you
have four dots-one on each side, then you can pair up.
 Note: It does not matter if you choose to put the dots on the
top, bottom, left, or right.
D. Application
 Lewis structures, or dot diagrams, are simplified way to show how
the valence electrons are arranged in the outer shell. This is where the
chemical reactions take place. Atoms will either share or give away
these electrons to form bonds.
 Using your periodic table, determine the number of valence
electrons for each element.
 Draw a dot to represent each valence electron around the
element symbol.
 Follow the patter below with position number 1.
