CATCH UP READING PROGRAM

S.Y. 2017-2018

I. Title: “CATCH-UP READING PROGRAM

II. Proponent: ANGELINE DIRECTO (GRADE I Teacher)

III. Background and Rationale

One of the 10-Point Basic Education principles of the current administration on education
is Making every Child a Reader by Grade I in consonance with the ongoing implementation of
Every Child A Reader by the DepEd. Many reading programs have been implemented such as
“Sa Aklat Sisikat” and ”Reading Recovery” to improve reading skills of pupils due to the low
performance of Filipino pupils in National Achievement Tests which is believed to be rooted
to the reading difficulties of pupils.

In Dipaculao Central School, result of the PhilIRI test shows that more than half of the
students fall on the frustration level in Filipino Oral Reading Test, while teachers reported
nonreaders in Grades I -5 pupils. There were also 10 pupils considered as very poor readers
and 8 in Grade I. Very poor readers because they cannot read simple sight words in English
and find it hard to combine syllables even in Filipino.

Moreover, Grade I teachers identified 20 pupils out of 60 who needs further remediation
since they find it hard to read.

From this scenario, the school develops a reading remediation entitled “Catch Up Reading
Program” to remediate these pupils so they be able to adapt the reading skills needed in their
respective Grades levels.

IV. Objectives
1. Develop children’s skill in sounding and listening comprehension in Grade I.
2. Develop totally readers in Grade I.
3. Develop reading fluency and love for reading among Grade I pupils.
4. Develop pupils’ phonetic mastery.
5. Make all Grade I readers using Mother Tongue.
6. Make Grade I pupils English readers.
7. Incorporate different reading activities such as Read-A-Thon, Drop Everything and
Read (DEAR), Big Brother/Big Sister/Kaklse ko, SAgot Ko, Shared\Reading, Pull out
