1. You are going to read a magazine interview entitled ‘No pain, no gain’. What do you think the interview
is about?

2. Find a partner and share your thoughts.

3. Talk to yourself about your answers to the following questions:


 Think of situations where there is no pain, there is no gain.
 Have you ever been in a no pain-no gain situation? What was it?
 What happened at the end of it?

4. Find a partner and share your thoughts.

5. Look at the photo next to the article that you’re going to listen to. Where is it? What sport do they
train?

6. Read the introduction to the interview. Find out what the no pain-no gain is about.

7. What is difficult about being a Kung Fu student in China? In groups of three, tell each other what you
think.

8. David Simmons is a British student in China. In groups of three, guess three or four reasons why he is
learning Kung Fu in China.

9. Now listen to the interview.

11. Read and check.

12. Read the questions in the interview again. With your partner, break them into words in each question
and write them into the table.

14. Exchange your question and answer for peer check.

15. You’ve been contacted by the editor of Foreign Languages Monthly (FLM), asking you if you would write
about English classes in your school.
Find a partner to prepare questions for your interview. Include at least 5 questions.

16. Work with your partner. Prepare answers to the questions in your interview.

17. Share your interview with the other pair. Ask them to match the questions to the answers.

18. Check the other pair’s answer. Give feedback. Also ask them for suggestions to improve it.

19. Submit your work to your teacher. For the next class bring a few photos to put in the magazine.
