STATISTICAL TABLES APPEAR ON PAGES 7 THROUGH 13

1. Suppose a random variable X has the following probability density

x for 0 < x < 1
f (x) =
2 − x for 1 ≤ x < 2

(a) Find the cumulative distribution function F (x) (4)

(b) Generate a simulated random sample of values from this distribution using the following
uniform random numbers as input: 0.79; 0.43 (4)
(c) Suppose that you have observed 200 values drawn from the above distribution. Explain (be
precise) how you would use normal approximations to construct a 95% confidence interval
for the lower quartile of the distribution. (4)
(d) Suppose now that instead of 200 values, you have only 10 values. Explain (be precise)
two further approaches that would still be appropriate if one wanted to construct a 95%
confidence interval for the lower quartile. (8)

[20]

2. A random sample of size 10 from an unknown distribution with median m has yielded the
following observations:

0.05 2.11 2.08 5.40 5.52

6.78 8.06 8.54 9.57 21.89

The sample medians for each of 1000 bootstrap samples were calculated, and then ordered from
smallest to largest. The following are some of the ordered results obtained:

Sample No. 1 10 25 50 100 250 500

Sample Med. 1.08 2.09 2.11 3.74 3.75 5.46 6.15
Sample No. 750 900 950 975 990 1000
Sample Med. 7.42 8.06 8.54 8.81 9.05 15.73

(a) Use the bootstrap results to find an exact p-value for a test of the null hypothesis H0 : m ≤ 4
against H1 : m > 4. What would you conclude? (5)
(b) Construct a 90% confidence interval for the median based on the bootstrap data. (5)

3. In the usual ANOVA notation, Yij represents the j-th observation in treatment group i, Yi· is the
average value in treatment group i and Y·· is the overall mean. Furthermore, ni is the number
of observations in treatment group i, k is the number of treatment groups, and N is the total
number of observations across all treatment groups. The Yij are normally distributed with mean
µi and variance σ 2 . Note that the variance is assumed equal in all treatment groups.

(a) Show that, for independent populations,

(b) Show that, under the null hypothesis of equal treatment means,

4. The independent random variables X and Y are normally distributed with zero means, and vari-
ances of 4 and 9 respectively. A further independent random variable V has the χ2 distribution
with 10 degrees of freedom.

(a) For what values of a and b does

V + a(X − Y + b)2

have an χ2 distribution? What degrees of freedom does it have? (4)

(b) Find c such that:
X −Y
Pr √ > c = 0.025
V
(5)
(c) Find the value h that would make the following probability statement true:
 2
(X /4 + Y 2 /9)

Pr ≤ h = 0.99
V

5. The following data (which have been sorted from smallest to largest) are supposed to have come
from a distribution with the probability density function given by

f (x|γ) = γx−γ−1 , x > 1, γ > 0.

1.08 1.19 1.34 1.36

1.68 2.42 4.74 5.02

(a) Estimate γ using both the method of moments and matching of quartiles. (8)
(b) Construct and plot a relevant P-P plot based on the first four sorted data points and the
method of moments estimator. What conclusions do you reach about the fitted distribution?
(5)

2
(c) Explain what quantities you would plot on the x-axis and y-axis if you were asked to con-
struct a Q − Q plot. Give specific algebraic expressions taking into account the distribution
above, but do not actually plot the Q−Q plot. (Again use the method of moments estimate
of γ). (2)

[15]

6. Let X1 , . . . , Xn be a random sample from the following discrete distribution:

P (X = x) = γ(1 − γ)x , x = 0, 1, 2, . . .

The parameter γ is unknown.

The following are the data points observed: 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 6, 7.

(a) Obtain a maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) for γ. (4)

(b) Obtain the approximate variance of the MLE and use the asymptotic normality property
of MLEs
Pto construct the 95% approximate confidence interval for γ.

7. A group of patients with symptoms of leprosy are to be screened to see whether they indeed
have the condition. If found positive they may be hospitalised (a1 ) or continued in outpatient
care (a2 ). If found negative they may be hospitalised, placed in outpatient care, or released from
treatment (a3 ).
There are two states of nature: either the patient has leprosy (θ1 ), or does not (θ2 ). Suppose
that in this particular group of patients the prior probability of θ1 is 0.8. After considerable
discussion, the following loss table has been agreed upon:

State
Action θ1 θ2
a1 1.0 1.0
a2 1.2 0.4
a3 3.0 0.5

For each state of nature the screening process (experiment) yields either a positive result (x1 ),
or a negative result (x2 ). One particular experiment has resulted in the following probabilities
being obtained:

State f (x1 |θ) f (x2 |θ)

θ1 0.8 0.2
θ2 0.1 0.9

Answer the following questions:

(a) Determine the best action when no experimental data are used, and the expected value of
perfect information. (4)
(b) Determine the best action conditional on each experimental outcome, if experimental data
are used. (9)
(c) Compute the expected value of sample information? (2)

[15]

8. Let p be the unknown probability that a machine will produce a defective item. Suppose a
prior distribution on p which is uniform on [0, 1]. A random sample of n items produced by the
machine is inspected, and the number of defectives x recorded. Answer the following questions:

3
(a) Show that the resulting posterior distribution follows a Beta distribution. (4)
(b) If the derived posterior distribution for p is Beta with parameter α = 7 and β = 95, how
many items were inspected, and how many of these were in good working order? (3)
(c) Is the prior in this question conjugate? Justify your answer. (3)
