What to do about homeless people is a big issue in most cities. Homeless people live and sleep in
pavements, lean- to’ s against walls of factories., moving pushcarts, spaces in terminals, markets and
bridges, the bigger the city, the more homeless people there are. Some people believe the government
should provide housing for them. There are those who say these homeless people should find a way to
take care of themselves. There are those who say homeless people must be sent where they came from.
A group of people called Friends of the Homeless is raising money for them. They are the
newspaper publishers. A certain amount of the money paid for advertisements is being raised. The group
brought five hectares of land in the province of Rizal where the homeless will be provided housing there. At
present, the group is meeting on how to select those who should be given houses. The group has not

Mrs. Luella Jones is on her way home when a young boy tries to steal her purse. Mrs.
Jones catches the boy and drags him home with her. She makes him wash his face, serves him
dinner and dishes up some homespun wisdom. She also asked him why he tried to steal her
purse. When he tells her he wanted blue suede shoes. Mrs. Jones tells the boy that he should
simply have asked for the shoes. She gives him money to buy a pair of shoes and sends him on
his way, telling him to behave himself. The boy named Roger wants to say more but ends up

Children and adults fly kites on windy days. The kites come in different sizes, colors and
designs. Some look like flaming dragons. Some look like giant birds. Some look like butterflies.
Most people fly kites for recreation. Flying kites had other uses. In the United States kites
have been used in scientific experiments. The National Weather Service made kites that
carried weather instruments. Military officers used kites in observing enemies; they used kites
too, to send messages among troops.
In Asian countries, kites have cultural and religious importance. The Chinese flew kites
to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. To some natives of the Pacific Islands, kites
symbolize life and death. The Polynesians flew bird- like kites as messengers to heaven.
