John 3 —
Born Again
1
There was a man from the
Pharisees named Nicodemus, a
ruler of the Jews.

This man came to Jesus at
night and said, “Rabbi, we
know that You are a teacher
that has come from God, for
no one is able perform these
signs that You do unless God
should be with him.”

Jesus replied saying, “I tell you
for certain: Unless someone is
born from above, he cannot see
the kingdom of God in action.”

can anyone be born when he is
old? Can he enter his mother’s
womb a second time and be born?”
5 He did not talk with the Lord Jesus
Jesus answered, “I tell you
for certain: Unless someone
is born of water and of the
Spirit, he cannot enter the
kingdom of God. 6 Whatever
is born of the flesh is flesh,
and whatever is born of the
Spirit is spirit.

Do not be amazed that I told
you: ‘You must also be born
from above’. 8 The wind blows
where it pleases, and you hear
its sound, but you don’t know
where it comes from or where it
is going. So it is with everyone
who is born of the Spirit.”

“How can these things be?”
asked Nicodemus.

Jesus replied: “Are you a
teacher of Israel and don’t
know these things?

I tell you for certain: We speak
what We know and We testify to

what We have seen, but you do
not accept Our testimony.

If I have told you about
things that happen on earth
and you don’t believe, how
will you believe if I tell you
about heavenly things?

No one has ascended into
heaven except the One who
descended from heaven —
that is the Son of Man who is
in heaven.
Christ talks to Nicodemus
Nicodemus was afraid, or ashamed
to be seen with Christ, therefore
came in the night. When religion
is out of fashion, there are many
like Nicodemus. But though he
him, and thereby teaches us to
encourage good beginnings, al-
though weak. And though this time
he came at night, yet afterward, we
believe, he became a Christian.

Jesus spoke of the necessity and
the nature of regeneration or the
new birth from above, and directed
Nicodemus to the way of holiness
of the heart. Birth is the beginning
of life; to be born again, is to begin
to live anew but now also in the
spiritual dimension. Without an
alive spirit we miss the purpose
of Gods intention for our lives.
We must have a new nature, new
principles, new desires, new aims.
By our first birth we were corrupt,
controlled by sinful flesh and its
wicked practices. This is why we
must become new creatures.
This new birth is from heaven, and
its affinity is to heaven. It is a great
change made in the heart of a
sinner, brought about by the power
of the Holy Spirit. It means that
something is done in us, and for us,
which we cannot do for ourselves.
Something is wrong with a life
without Christ, and this life which
begins with inherited guilt from
Adam, will last for ever. We have
to reach out to this renewed
dimension for our life in Christ. We
cannot otherwise expect any benefit
from Christ. A complete change
of heart is necessary for our
happiness here and hereafter.

Just as Moses lifted up the
serpent in the wilderness, in
the same way the Son of Man
must be lifted up, 15 so that
everyone who believes in Him
should not perish but will have
eternal life.

“For God loved the world
in this way: He gave His
one-of-a-kind Son, so that
everyone who believes in
Him will not perish but have
eternal life.

For God did not send His
Son into the world that He
might judge the world, but that
the world might be saved
through Him.

Anyone who believes in
Him is not judged, but anyone
who does not believe is already
judged, because he has not
believed in the name of the
one-of-a-kind Son of God.

“This is how judgment
works: the light of God has
come into the world, but men
loved darkness of evil rather
than the light, because their
deeds were evil.

For everyone who practices
wicked things hates the light
and does not come to the
light, so that his deeds may
not be exposed.

But anyone who lives by
the principles of truth
comes to the light, so that
his works may be shown to
be accomplished through
God’s guidance.”

Verses 22-36: John was fully
satisfied with the place and work
assigned him, but Jesus came for

government and the resultant
peace there would be no end, and
he himself would be less popular.
John knew that Jesus came from
heaven as the Son of God, while
he was just a sinful, mortal man,
who could only speak about the
more basic subjects of religion.
The words of Jesus were the
words of God. He had the Spirit,
not by measure, as the prophets,
but in all fullness.
Everlasting life could only be
gained by faith in Him, whereas
all those, who do not believe in
the Son of God, cannot partake
of salvation, but the righteous
demand to satisfy the holiness of

John the Baptist (5 B.C.-31 A.D.)
is the forerunner of the Messiah,
Jesus of Nazareth.
The two ancient sources that
speak of John are the Gospels
and the Antiquities of the Jewish
historian Josephus Flavius. John
was the son of the priest
Zachariah and of Elizabeth, and
the cousin of Mary, the mother of
terms. The One who comes
from heaven is above all.

Jesus. He was born in Palestinian
hill country about 5 B.C. Little is
known of his early years. His birth
and name were foretold by an
angel of God to his father and
that his conception was miraculous
because his mother, Elizabeth,
was beyond childbearing age.
He spent his early years "in the
desert".
As an adult, John appeared on
the banks of the river Jordan
sometime during the reign of
Herod Antipas (ca. 21 B.C.-
A.D. 39). Since Jesus was put to
death sometime between A.D. 29
and 31, and since he and John
met at the beginning of Jesus' public
life, it can be assumed that John
started his own public ministry
sometime in the mid-20’s of the
1st century A.D.
According to the sources, John
was a reforming zealot. He
preached an imminent catastrophe
of divine punishment for sinners;
he castigated hypocrisy, demanded
repentance, and announced the
imminent coming of the Messiah
to establish the kingdom of God.
John furthermore insisted that all
who repented of their sins should
come to him and go through a rite
of washing or baptising. For this
reason he was called the Baptist.
Two major events marked John's
career. First was the baptism of
Jesus (Matthew 3:13-17; Mark
1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22; John 1:29-34).
Jesus came and, being baptised
by John, was recognised by him
as the son of God. The second
event concerned king Herod, who
had dismissed his first wife, the
daughter of King Aretas, and had
married Herodias, the wife of his
brother. John denounced this act.
Herod, fearing that John's preaching
might provoke retributive action
by Aretas, imprisoned John in the
fortress of Machaerus. The Gospels
relate that Herodias, wounded in
her pride, prevailed on Herod
through the charms of her daughter,
Salome, to have John beheaded.
This happened at about A.D. 28-30.

Who is that man that struts the stage,
shouting to a crowd in holy rage?
A message straight and bold and strong,
proclaiming Jesus as mighty to the throng
He has a face with furrows made by tears
that speak of pain and battles of many years.
Each one of them waged unto victory
in Jesus’ name who died for sins on a tree
He wears a smile of love and hope
to tell the story of his life and farm,
igniting a flame – a torch of revival
for this is a man that fought a battle for survival.
Now I and you can see in him
such battle in Jesus any man can win.
Its safe to cast all cares in faith
as long as Jesus is also in the storm
since God has sent His Son – that’s our norm
Come one and all to walk the road
don't look at waves or fear to harbour hate
Render all these things to an era of late
but stand fast-strong – be solid in Jesus’ abode
Say a word to your son of forgiveness
and tell him he’s great and all can do
what God has made him unto greatness
for from now on Jesus’ strength will take you through.

Angus Buchan was originally a Zambian
maize and cattle farmer of Scottish descent
who started farming in Zambia but was forced
to sell everything and move to Greytown,
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa in 1978.
In 1980 he and Jill started the Shalom
Ministries to preach in his local community.
Over time he has become a full time evan-
gelist while both his sons run the farm.
In 1998 Angus wrote a book about his
life, Faith Like Potatoes, the book was
turned into a film of the same title in 2006.
The Mighty Men Conference, organised
by Shalom trust, is a Christian gathering
of men. In recent years the number of
men has grown from a few hundred to
over 300,000 in April 2010.

Armour of God
Children & Parents
1
Children, obey your parents
in the Lord, because this is
right.
2 Finally, my brethren, be
“Honour your father and
mother” — which is the first
commandment with a prom-
ise — 3 “that it may go well
with you and that you may
have a long life on the earth”.
4 The duty of servants is summed

up anger in your children, but
bring them up in the training
and instruction of the Lord.
The great duty of children is, to
obey their parents. That obedi-
ence includes inward reverence,
as well as outward acts, and in
every age prosperity has come
to those that stood out for their
obedience to their parents.
The duty of parents: Be not
impatient; use no unreasonable
excessive sternness. Deal carefully
and wisely with children. Help
them to judge and work on their
sound reason. Bring them up well
under proper and lovable, but
strict correction to show them
what it is that God requires. God
alone can change the heart, yet
he gives his blessing to the good
lessons and examples of parents,
and answers their prayers.
But those, whose only hope and
aim is that their children should
be rich and well trained, whatever
becomes of them spiritually, must
not look for the blessing of God.

bling, in the sincerity of your
heart, as you would to Christ.

servants of old were generally
slaves. The apostles were to
teach servants and masters their
duties, in doing whatever would
be the best at the time, till slavery
would be abolished completely
through the steady influence of
Christianity. Servants are to give
reverence to those over them. They
are to be sincere, not pretending
obedience when they mean to
disobey, but serving faithfully.
And they must serve their mas-
ters not only when their master
can see what they are doing, but
must be strict in the fulfilling
of their duty, even when he is
absent and out of the way.
Giving honour and respect to the
Lord Jesus Christ will make men
faithful and sincere in every way,
not grudgingly or by constraint,
but from a principle of love also
to the masters and their concerns.
This makes service easy for them,
pleasing to their masters, and
acceptable to the Lord Jesus. God
will reward even the worst routine
work, done from a sense of duty,
and with a view to glorify him.
Here is the duty of masters. Act
in the same way. Be fair to serv-
ants, as you expect they should
be honest to you; show the same
good-will and concern for them,
and be careful herein to have a
good conscience before God. Do
not be tyrannical and demanding.
You have a Master to obey, and
you and they are after all fellow-
servants in respect to Christ. If
masters and servants would con-
sider their duties to God, and
the account they must eventually
give to him, they would consider
their duty to each other, and
in this way families would also
be more sorted out and happy.

There is a battle raging in a sphere
Against an enemy that’s not from here
Whom you and I as Christians must now fight
With God’s armour we’re made strong in the
power of His might
We are not up against mere flesh and blood
For principalities and powers have joined the flood
Of wicked rulers of the darkness of this age
Against the spiritual hosts a heavenly war we wage
For this very situation God lovingly designed
A suit of armour to wear – our protection in mind
That in this evil onslaught we may withstand
Such a complete protection God has at hand
Now imagine yourself to be a spiritual soldier
Who puts on his armour which makes him much bolder
And see yourself stand in your tunic so clean
The wide girdle called “truth” makes a soldier look mean
Those things God made known of Himself to you
Those truths will always in battle bring you through
Do you remember how God has revealed:
Christ’s death on a cross your salvation has sealed
He even so earned complete righteousness then
Which you may now claim as in Christ you are Him
For this is the mystery of union through faith
His breastplate my righteousness protects me within
Yes, now you can stand on sandal’s sure footing
Bringing good news to lost ones must have its deep rooting
In sound teaching of Apostles with doctrine so clear

Think of the concepts that make us strong in a fight against a

spiritual enemy, not the pictures that the weapons bring to our
minds. The truth of who God is (not a belt), the sure footing on
the Apostle’s doctrine (not strappy sandals). Then stand firmly!

Spiritual strength and courage are needed for
our spiritual warfare and suffering. Those who
would prove themselves to have true grace, must
aim at all grace — and put on the whole armour
of God, which He prepares and gives us.
The Christian armour is made to be worn and
we should not put it off until we have done our
warfare, and finished our noble course. The fierce
combat is not against human enemies, nor against
our own corrupt nature only. We have to do
with an enemy who has a thousand ways of
misleading unstable souls. The devil assaults
us in the things that belong to our souls, and
works hard to deface the heavenly image of
Christ in our hearts. We must decide, by God's
grace, not to yield to Satan. Resist him, and
he will flee. If we give way, he will gain ground.
If we distrust either our cause, or our Leader,
or our armour, we give him the advantage.

And most important, take a firm hold on the
shield of faith, and with it you will be able to
extinguish the flaming arrows of the evil one.

Receive the helmet of salvation, and the
sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Pray for one another

With every prayer and request, pray at all
times in the Spirit, and stay very alert for this
purpose, with all the perseverance you can
gather and as you make intercession for all
the saints.

Pray also for me, that the appropriate
message may be given to me when I open
my mouth to make known with boldness the
whole mystery of the gospel.

For this purpose I am an ambassador in a
chain. Pray that I might be bold enough in
Him to speak as I am supposed to do.

Tychicus, a dearly loved brother and
faithful minister in the Lord, will tell you
everything so that you also may know the
things about me and all that I’m doing.

I am sending him to you for this very
reason, to let you know our situation and to
comfort your hearts.

Convey my sincere blessing of peace to

accept it with faith, as it comes from God

Two Edges of the Word:
The Word of God is Law

that stains us. The Law,

we are to be saved.

Calvary Chapter Reader
The picture of a soldier is called up for us by Paul who must have
been looking closely at the whole armour of a Roman Soldier. The
readers of his day knew them very well as the whole world of the
day was under the rule of the Roman empire.
The tunic is not mentioned in this Bible passage but it refers to the
armies in heaven in Rev 19:14 that are clothed in fine linen and the
ones that have overcome in Rev 3:5. These are the ones fit for serv-
ice. Over the tunic the wide girdle (truth) and breastplate are placed.
This depicts the righteousness which Christ has earned on the cross.
The breastplate speaks of the same righteousness we have if we
are in Christ. This union is a mystery to understand and is therefore
grasped in faith. Realising that we have been made right with God is
our protection against the enemy.
The sandals depict the readiness (not willingness) with which we
are able to bring the gospel due to our training in doctrine. This
gives us a sure platform to stand on as we communicate His love.
Its faith we are to reach for and hold on to against the darts of doubt
the enemy hurls at us. Likewise the helmet is the sure fact of your salva-
tion which protects your mind where most of the fighting is located.
Thusfar we dealt with protection. Now comes the sword which is the
weapon: the Word of God spoken from your mouth to bring victory.

subtle then all the wild

"Did God actually say, 'You
may not eat from any of the
trees in the garden'?"

serpent, "We may eat the fruit
from the trees in the garden.

There is scarcely any sin against which our Lord

measure of carefulness about temporal things which
is quite in order to have, but we must not carry
this reasonable care too far. Do not worry about
your life. Not about how long you will live; leave
that to God who may lengthen or shorten it as he
pleases; our times are safe in his hand. Also not
about the comforts of this life; but leave it in God’s
hands to make it as bitter or sweet as he pleases.
Food and clothing God has promised, therefore
we may expect these. Take no thought for
to-morrow, or the time ahead. Do not be anxious
for the future, how you shall live next year, or when
you are old, or what you shall leave behind you.
As we must not boast of tomorrow, so we must not
worry about to-morrow, or what will happen. God
has given us life and a body. And what can he not
do for us since He did that? If we take care about
our souls and our bell-being for eternity, what is of
more value than the body and its life. Then we can
certainly trust God for the more simple items such
as food and clothing. Learn to trust in God.
We must be content with what we have as we also
are satisfied with our stature in Christ. We cannot
alter what God has decided to freely give each of us,
therefore we must submit to God in full acceptance.
To take care of our soul for eternity is the best

cure of the world’s worries. Seek first the kingdom
of God, putting first your relationship with God: do
not be negative about His provision; no, relying on
God is the way to be well provided for.
We conclude that it is the will and command of the
Lord Jesus, that by daily prayers we may get strength
to overcome our daily troubles, and to arm us against
the temptations that come with it, and then let none
of these things move us to despair. Those who
accept Jesus Christ as their saviour will be blessed,
especially if they prove Him to be trustworthy by
doing this in complete abandonment. May His Spirit
convict those who have not accepted Him and for
us saints, take away the worldliness of our hearts.

Matthew describes Jesus as instructing people: "you should pray

like this" when He gives them this prayer. Taking into account
the prayer's structure, flow of subject matter and emphases, we
understand the Lord's Prayer is meant as a guideline on how to
pray rather than something to be learned and repeated by rote.

The Passover was to be kept
every year, as a remembrance of
Israel's deliverance out of Egypt,
and is a type of Christ. Their de-
liverance was not a reward of
their own righteousness, but a gift
of mercy. They were reminded of
this, and by an ordinance they were
taught that all blessings came to
them through the shedding and
sprinkling of blood of God’s Lamb.

bread during the first month, from
the evening of the fourteenth
day until the evening of the
twenty-first day of the month.

that person must be cut off
from the community of

typical. The blood of the lamb
must be sprinkled, denoting the
applying of the merits of Christ's
death to our souls; we must re-
ceive the atonement, Ro 5:11.
Faith is the bunch of hyssop, by
which we apply the promises, and
the benefits of the blood of Christ
laid up in them, to ourselves.
It was to be sprinkled on the door-
posts, denoting the open profession
we are to make of faith in Christ.
It was not to be sprinkled upon
the threshold; which cautions us
to take heed of trampling under
foot the blood of the covenant. It
is precious blood, and must be
precious to us. The blood, sprin-
kled in this way, was a means of
preserving the Israelites from the
destroying angel, who had nothing
to do where the blood was. The
blood of Christ is the believer's
protection from the wrath of God,
the curse of the law, and the dam-
nation of hell, Romans 8:1.

honourable character in the Word
of God. Faith was the principle of
their obedience, remarkable service,
and patience in their suffering.

Genesis 22: 8-11 Abraham says to Isaac: "My son, God will provide a lamb for a burnt-
offering." The Holy Spirit, by his mouth, seems to predict the Lamb of God, which he has
provided, and which takes away the sin of the world. Abraham lays the wood in order for his
Isaac's funeral pile, and now tells him the amazing news: Isaac, you are the lamb which God
has provided! Abraham, no doubt, comforting him with the same hope with which he himself
by faith was comforted. Yet it is necessary that the sacrifice be bound. This being done,
Abraham takes the knife, and stretches out his hand to give the fatal blow. Here is an act of
faith and obedience, which deserves to be a spectacle to God, angels, and men. God, by his
providence, calls us to part with an Isaac sometimes, and we must do it with. It was not God's
intention that Isaac should actually be sacrificed, yet nobler blood than that of animals,
in due time, was to be shed for sin, which is the blood of the only begotten Son of God.

Psalm 23 may be divided into two sections:
The first explores the image of God as
Shepherd, guiding and caring for his sheep.
This theme is reflected in the New Testament,
where Jesus is seen to be the Good Shepherd
of the flock (John 10:1-21).
In the second section David is invited to partake
in a meal – and the Lord God is the host of
this extravagant banquet.

“The Lord is my Shepherd”
In these words, the believer is taught
to express his satisfaction in the care
of the great Pastor of the universe, the
Redeemer and Preserver of men. With joy
he reflects that he has a shepherd, and
that shepherd is the LORD.
A flock of sheep, gentle and harmless,
feeding in pastures of soft green grass,
tender shepherd, forms an emblem of
believers brought back to the Shepherd
of their souls. The greatest abundance is
only a dry pasture to a wicked man, who
relishes in it only what pleases the senses;
but to a godly man, who by faith tastes the
goodness of God in all his enjoyments,
though he may have little of the wealth of
the world, it is to him a green pasture.
The Lord gives quiet and contentment in
the mind, whatever your portion is. Are
we blessed with the green pastures of
God’s command and provision, let us not
think that it is enough to merely pass
through them, but let us dwell in them.
The consolations of the Holy Spirit are the
still waters by which the ones in Christ
are led. These are streams which flow
from the Fountain of living waters. Those
only are led by the still waters of comfort,
who walk in the paths of righteousness.
The way of duty is the truly pleasant way.
The work of righteousness in peace. In
these paths we cannot walk, unless God
leads us into them, and leads us on in them.
Discontent and distrust come from a life
of unbelief – an unsteady spiritual walk is
the consequence. Let us then simply trust
our Shepherd's care, and listen to his voice.
The valley of the shadow of death may
indicate the most severe and terrible
suffering, or oppressive time of disteress,
that the psalmist ever could come under.
Between our life as part of the flock on
earth and that which is our destiny in
heaven, death lies like a dark
valley that must be passed when
going from one to the other. But
even in this journey there are
words which lessen the terror. It
is but the shadow of death: the
shadow of a serpent will not sting,
nor the shadow of a sword kill.
It is indeed a deep valley, and it’s
dark, and goes through heavy mud;
but valleys are often fruitful, and so
we often find that death itself is
fruitful, full of comfort to God's
people. It is a walk through it: they
shall not be lost wandering around
in this valley, but get safely to the
mountain on the other side.
Death is seen as the king of terrors,
but not to the sheep of Christ.
When they come to die, God will
rebuke the enemy; he will guide
them with his rod, and sustain
them with his staff. There is
enough in the gospel to comfort
the saints when dying, and under-
neath us are the everlasting arms.
The Lord's people may feast at his
table, upon the provisions of his
love. Satan and wicked men are
not able to destroy this luxury,
since they are anointed with the
Holy Spirit, and drink of the cup of
salvation which is always full.
Past experience teaches believers
to trust that the goodness and
mercy of God will follow them all
the days of their lives, and it is their
desire and determination, to seek
their happiness in the service of
God here, and they hope to enjoy
his love for ever in heaven.
While here, the Lord can make
any situation pleasant, by the
anointing of his Spirit and the joys
of his salvation. But those that
would be satisfied with the blessings
of his house, must keep close to
the duties of it.

This poem was inspired by The Gospel according to John
chapter 10:1-10. Here is a parable or similitude, taken
from the customs of the East, in the management of sheep.
Men, as creatures depending on their Creator, are called
the sheep of his pasture. The church of God in the world is
as a sheep-fold, exposed to deceivers and persecutors.
The great Shepherd of the sheep (my Ark) knows all that are
his, guards them by his providence, guides them by his Spirit
and word, and goes before them, as the Eastern shepherds
went before their sheep, to set them in the way of his steps.
Ministers must serve the sheep in their spiritual concerns.
The Spirit of Christ will set before them an open door. The
sheep of Christ will observe their Shepherd, and be cautious
and shy of strangers, who would draw them from faith in
him to false doctrine (noise) about him.

Life in the Spirit

are in Christ Jesus, who do
not walk according to the flesh,
but according to the Spirit.

his life to, he does not belong to
Him as part of the body of Christ.
Believers may be disciplined by
the Lord, but they will not be con-
demned with the world. They are
secure since they are united with
Christ through faith. The new prin-
ciple of their way of life is not the
flesh but the Spirit, the old nature
of corruption has made place for
grace. This is how we make provi-
sion, this is how we are governed.
The unrenewed will is unable to
keep any commandment fully. And
the law, besides outward duties,
requires inward obedience. God
showed us His abhorrence of sin
by punishing sin through His Son’s
sufferings in the flesh, that all be-

Divine justice, and the way of sal-
vation opened for the sinner. By
the Spirit the law of love is written
upon the heart, and though the
righteousness of the law is not
fulfilled by us, yet, it is fulfilled in
us. All true believers have a sense
of the intention of the law. They all
want the favour of God, the welfare
of the soul and they think about
eternity. These are the things of
the Spirit, which those that live
according to the Spirit do mind.
By the power of Divine grace, we
may have the Spirit of God and
Christ. In this way carnal man may
be made subject to the law of God,
(but the carnal mind which is an
enemy of God, never can). This
means having an inclination having
the same mind that was in Christ
Jesus, and is to be shown by a life
according to his precepts and example.

Now if the Spirit of Christ
is in you, the body can just
as well be reckoned as dead
because of sin, but the
Spirit’s presence brings real
life because of the imputed
righteousness of Christ.

And if the Spirit of Him who
resurrected Jesus from the dead
has a position of dominion
within your life, then He who
raised Christ from the dead
will also bring your bodies
that are subject to death, to
real life through His Spirit who
lives in you.
The Spirit gives Sonship

So then, brothers, we do
not have a moral debt to the
sinful desires of the flesh to
arrange our life according the

But if by the dominion of the
Spirit that operates within

If the Spirit is in us,
Christ is in us. He dwells

Grace in the soul is its
new nature; the soul is
alive to the things of
God, and its joy shall
endure for ever. The
imputed righteousness
of Christ secures us from
death. It is our duty being
renewed by the Spirit to
walk, not after the flesh,
but after the Spirit. Let
us then, by the Spirit,
attempt to put to death
the desires of the flesh.
Regeneration by the
Holy Spirit brings a new
and Divine life to the
soul, though in a weak
body. And the sons of
God have the Spirit to
make them like children.

instruments of sin. Yet our hope
is that God will deliver us from
this fallen state in which we are
enslaved. This will not always
continue as it is. Having received
the first-fruits of the Spirit, it brings
life and encourages our hopes,
and raises our expectations.
Sin is the guilty cause of all the
suffering that exists in the creation
of God. It affects the glory of God
because our comfort consists
rather in hope than in enjoyment
of His promises. We need patience,
our way is rough and long; but
He will come, although it seems
a long time.

In the light of all this, what
are we to say about these
things God has planned?
Seeing that God is for us in
such a glorious way, who can
possibly be against us?
Nobody!
Everything provided affects the
spiritual good of those that love
God. As it breaks them off from
sin, it brings them nearer to God,
weaning them from the world’s
desires, and training them for
heaven. When the saints act out
of character, discipline will be used
to bring them back again. And
here is the order of the way of
salvation, a golden chain which
cannot be broken:
1. Whom he did foreknow, he also
did predestinate to be conformed
to the image of his Son. God
who knows the end from the
beginning drew out a map for
them to walk, with boundaries to
keep them from going astray.
2. Whom he did predestinate,
them he also called. A call, from
self, vanity and sin to God, and
Christ, and heaven, and grace.
This is the gospel call.
3. Whom he called, them he also
justified. Those who resist the
gospel call, stay under guilt and wrath.
4. Whom he justified, them he also
glorified. The power of sin is now
broken and the guilt of sin is
removed, nothing can come between
that soul and his future glory. This
encourages our faith and hope as
God’s way and work is certain.
The apostle speaks as one
amazed, and wondering at the
love of Christ. While God is for
us, and we stay in his love, we
may with holy boldness defy all
the powers of darkness.

Life is a real battle – as Chris-
tians we know this, but it will not
always be so. God removes our
troubles in love when He forgives
sin. God exercises His mercy in full
display of His justice when Christ
dies for the atonement of our sins.
In Christ, and through all He went
through for us, those who truly
ample forgiveness because the
way in which Christ by His death
on the cross satisfied God’s
demand, was of infinite value.
The Holy Spirit through the
Baptist, in the New Testament,
proclaims the approach of Christ.
When eastern princes marched
through desert countries, ways
were prepared for them, and hin-
drances removed. And may the
Lord prepare our hearts by the
teaching of his word and the con-
viction of his Spirit, that proud
thoughts may be brought down,
good desires planted, bad tempera-
ments made straight and softened,
and every hindrance removed, that
we may be ready for his will on
earth, and well prepared for his
heavenly kingdom.
How else do we compare all the
things that belong to fallen man,
and its flower? And what will all
the titles and possessions of a
dying sinner help him, when these
still leave him with a feeling of
condemnation! The word of the
Lord can do for us, which all the
rest we have, miserably fails at.
The good news of the coming of
Christ was to be sent out to the
ends of the earth. Satan is like a
fully armed thug, but the Lord
Jesus is stronger and will continue
to do all that he has planned for
us. Christ is the good Shepherd.
He shows kind-hearted care for
the new converts, those believers
who are still weak, and those who
are deeply sorry for their sins.
Having given us His promises and
good news in His word, he
requires no more service to earn
His forgiveness, and while He
provides He does not add more
trouble for us than what He
strengthens them for. May we know
our Shepherd's voice, and follow
him, proving ourselves his sheep.

waters of the earth in the hollow
of his hand or measured the
heavens using the width of
the palm of his hand? Who
has calculated the dust of the
earth using a measure or
weighed the mountains and
the hills in a balance scale?

Him counsel to teach Him?

Whom did He consult with?
Who gave Him understanding
and taught Him the paths of
justice? Who taught Him how to
gather knowledge and showed
Him the way of gaining under-
standing? It is unthinkable!

Just think of it, the nations
are like a mere drop dripping
from a bucket; they are
considered as a speck of dust
left on the scales; He could
pick up the islands as if it was
a very little thing.

Even Lebanon with all it’s
wood is not enough for fuel,
or its animals are not enough
for a proper burnt offering to
the LORD.

All the nations are as
nothing before H i m ; t h e y
are regarded by Him as
vanished into nothingness
and emptiness.
All created beings look feeble in
comparison with the Creator. When
the Lord, by his Spirit, made the
world, no-one directed his Spirit, or
gave Him advice as to what to do,
or how to do it. The nations, in com-
parison of him, are as a drop com-
pared with the vast ocean or as a
speck of dust compared to the
whole earth. This puts God's love
for the world in perspective. Even
if is so small, He still values it
enough to give his only-begotten
Son. What the church does can-
not add to what He did. Our souls
would have perished for ever, if the
only Son of the Father had not given
himself for us.

Who will you compare God
with? Or, to what likeness will
you line Him up to?

To an idol? — something that
a workman casts, and a met-

worship them. Often people who
are so poor, that they cannot give
an offering, they will still spend
all they have on a “god” of their
own making. We often grumble
about what is spent in the service
of our God.
To prove the greatness of God, the
prophet appeals to all ages and
nations to reflect on this. God is in
full control of all creatures, and of
all created things. The prophet di-
rects us to use our reason as well
as our senses. We should consider
who created the heavenly bodies,
and to pay our due respect to Him.
Not one of these bodies fails to
fulfil his will. And remember: He gave
us all the promises, and will bring them
to pass in due time.

why do you assert O Israel: "My
LORD does not notice in what
trouble I am, and my valid claim
for help is ignored by my God"?

Everybody has heard this!
The everlasting God, the
LORD, the Creator of the

hope to comprehend the
depth of His understanding.

The people of God are repri-
manded for their unbelief. They
must remember their forefathers

They stand in covenant with Him.
We should not have evil thoughts
in our minds, nor use evil words
as a result. Their experience was
sufficient to silence all these fears
and distrusts. Where God had be-
gun the work of grace, he will
perfect it. He will help those who,
in humble dependence on him,
help themselves. As the day
proves to have different demands,
so shall their strength be.
In the strength of God-given grace
their spirit shall rise above the
abilities of the world. They shall
happily run the way God indicates.
Let us be careful that we do not
give in to unbelief, pride, and
thoughtless self-confidence. If we
go ahead in our own strength, we
will stumble, and eventually fall
down; but having our hearts and
our hopes in heaven, we shall
overcome all difficulties, and be
enabled to lay hold of the prize of
our high calling in Christ Jesus.

Moses gives particular instances
of God's kindness and concern
for them. The eagle's care for her
young is a beautiful emblem of
Christ's love, who came between
Divine justice and our guilty souls,
and baring our sins in his own
body on the tree. And by the
preached gospel, and the influences
of the Holy Spirit, He stirs up and pre-
vails upon sinners to leave Satan's
bondage. In ver. (13, 14), are
emblems of the conquest believers
have over their spiritual enemies,
sin, Satan, and the world, in and
through Christ. Also of their safety
and triumph in him; of their happy
frames of soul, when they are
above the world, and the things
of it. This will be the blessed case
in the latter day. (Deut 32:15-18)

Moses was well versed in intercession. Four times he interceded
on behalf of Pharaoh and the people of Egypt to relieve them
from God’s wrath. He stood between the people of Israel and
God’s wrath at the rebellion of Korah (Numbers 16:20-22),
pleaded for mercy for Miriam in her pride and rebellion (Num-
bers 12:9-14), sought on behalf of the dispossessed people
of Israel to protect them (from Pharoah’s army at the Red Sea),
provide for them (manna and water) and guide them (the pillar
of fire and cloud of smoke). All of this he did through entreaty
to his God. Then, at the end of his ministry he turns to the
people with this song to plead to them to follow the law or bear
the consequences — as he will not be there anymore to plead.

and the prophecies give us an
idea what those purposes are.
The Lord will never disgrace the
throne of his glory. It is great wisdom,
and will help much to the return of
sinners to God, seriously to con-
sider where they will end up, or
what their future state would be.

The Intercessor
He devotes himself to much
prayer. He knows what is
going on in the world. These
“things that cause the wrath”
he intercedes and gets guid-
ance for its healing. He is
very sensitive for the word
of the Lord and the Spirit’s
guidance. He relentlessly
fights a fierce battle in
the spiritual realm. Like
t h e intercessor we also
experience victory through
Jesus. He does not pray for
himself, but strategically
to prevent the fall of a saint
– being helped by angels.
When he sees the victory
in the spiritual realm he
thanks God for peace and
grace. He can continue for
Jesus fights this war with
His angels when there is
even one pleading voice
who asks for it.

Facts About Deuteronomy
1. The author is Moses.
2. The book contains three separate speeches Moses delivered to the Isra-
elites while on the Moab Plain. There are two separate songs or sections of
poetry. Moses Blessing is found in chapter 33. The book reads like a sermon.
3. The Hebrew title is Elleh Haddebarim which translates to “These are the
words”. The English title reflects the Greek word Deuteronomion meaning
“second law”. In one of his speeches Moses repeats the Ten Commandments.
4. During the course of Deuteronomy the responsibility for the Israelites
passes from Moses to Joshua — the next generation.
5. The main idea of Deuteronomy regards the covenant between God and
the Israelites. The instruction is to keep the commandments because you
love God. This idea is at the heart of the covenant.
6. The themes of Deuteronomy are commandments, covenant, God’s mighty
acts, and transition. Forms of “command” are used over 100 times.
7. Chapter 1-11 look backwards to where the Israelites came from and
summarises what happened to them from their founding with a dynamic
leader. Chapter 12 begins a look forward to the settlement of promised land
and a royal dynasty.

Commentary:
This whole chapter may not be
separated from the argument in
the preceding and following chap-
ment, a very telling part of it.
The chapter falls easily into three
divisions: (1) the absolute neces-
sity of love (1 Corinthians 13:1-
3), (2) the characteristics of love
(1 Corinthians 13:4-7), and (3) the
permanence of love (1 Corinthi-
ans 13:8-13).
Despite this classification, 1 Cor.
13:13 evidently stands apart. The
disorders of the Corinthian church
are continually in view. Both the
positive and negative attributes
of love in 1 Cor. 13:4-7 are clearly
the opposites of conditions among
the Corinthians.
Also, such words as "tongues ...
prophecy ... knowledge ... faith
so as to move mountains cannot
be understood, except as refer-
ences to the miraculous gifts at
Corinth. This chapter should
never be construed as merely an
abstract teaching on love, paren-
thetically inserted. The situation
at Corinth was still the center of
Paul's attention here.
Mirrors
Corinth was famous for good
mirrors. They did not have clear
glass then, so they made them
out of metal. But highly polished
metal is not as good as a modern
glass mirror. It would reflect the
image of a person, but not a
perfect image.
God already knows us completely.
In the next age, we shall under-
stand God’s ways. We cannot
understand them completely in
this life.
Faith, Hope, Love
These three words explain the
whole of the Christian life in this
world. Christians have ‘faith’ that
God will forgive them because of
Christ’s sacrifice. They have
‘hope’ for the future, because of
Christ’s resurrection. They live a
life of faith and hope among
Christian brothers and sisters
whom they ‘love’. Of these three,
only love will remain into eternity.

The City of Corinth
Corinth's existence goes back to very ancient times.
The Greek poet Homer spoke of it in 1200 B.C. as
“wealthy Corinth.” The Roman general Mummius
completely destroyed the city in 146 B.C. to crush
the Greek desires for an independent Greece. Julius
Caesar in 44 B.C. dispatched a colony of Roman
veterans and freemen to rebuild the city. A new
Corinth arose from its ruins under Caesar Augustus,
who rebuilt the city extensively in 27 B.C.
By A.D. 50 Corinth was the fourth largest city in the
Roman Empire. Its population has been estimated
at around 250,000. Athens surpassed Corinth with
its cultural attractions of fabulous architecture and
sculpture. Corinth, on the other hand, surpassed
Athens as the leading city of Greece and the capitol
of the Roman province of Achaia in southern Greece.
Corinth was a bustling metropolis. It was wealthy
and prosperous. Its importance and wealth were due
to its strategic location on the narrow isthmus that
connected the southern peninsula of Greece to its
mainland and separated the Aegean Sea to the east
from the Adriatic Sea to the west. Trade between
Asia Minor (Turkey today) in the East and Rome and
Italy in the West was funneled back and forth through
Corinth on the narrow isthmus. Rather than risk the
dangers of sailing through the storms and rough seas
around the southern coast of the lower peninsula of
Greece, the ships brought their cargoes from east to
west to one of two strategic sea ports on the eastern
coast of Greece. The ships either sailed to the port
city of Thessalonica in the northern province of
Macedonia or to Corinth in the southern province of
Achaia. Corinth had two harbors, Cenchrea on the
eastern shore of the isthmus on the Saronic Gulf of
the Aegean Sea and Lechaeum on the western shore
of the isthmus on the Gulf of Corinth of the Adriatic
Sea. From the port of Cenchrea the smaller vessels
with their cargoes still loaded were rolled overland
across the five kilometer wide isthmus to the port of
Lechaeum, where they were relaunched to continue
their voyage across the Adriatic Sea to Italy and
Rome. The larger ships had their cargoes unloaded
at Cenchrea and transported overland across the
isthmus to Lechaeum, where the cargoes were
reloaded onto waiting ships to carry them to Italy.
Being such an important commercial center of great
wealth, plus the capitol city of Achaia, people of many
different nationalities and cultures crowded the streets
of Corinth. Many sailors on shore leave also visited
the city. These factors contributed to the excessive
sexual immorality that characterised Corinth, as did
the temple of Aphrodite (or Venus), one of the twelve
heathen temples in Corinth. Aphrodite was the
pagan goddess of love. It has been said that more
than one thousand temple prostitutes offered their
sexual services as part of the worship of Aphrodite.
By A.D. 50 the sexual immorality of Corinth was so
infamous that the term “to corinthianise” was coined
to denote people's living in sexual immorality and
having intercourse with prostitutes as the Corinthians

characteristically did. Greek plays commonly portrayed a
citizen of Corinth as either a drunk or a prostitute. It is
interesting to note that the heathen idolatry and gross
sexuality immorality that Paul described in Romans 1:18-27
he wrote while in Corinth.
The Church of God In Corinth
The metropolis of Corinth was a city bound in the
devil's darkness of worldly wealth and commerce,
paganism and heathen religions, sexual immorality
and drunkenness, and the love of human philosophy
and wisdom. From a strictly human point of view
one might think that God would have written off
Corinth as a lost cause, the devil's domain, and let its
inhabitants go to their deserved eternal destruction.
But the one true God of heaven and earth is the
Lord of love. He had Jesus die to save the sinners
of Corinth no less than to save the sinners of the
rest of the world. The Lord of love had no intention
of writing off all the people of the sin-sick city of
Corinth. He had every intention of reaching out with
his grace in Jesus Christ to save many of Corinth's
inhabitants. Thus he sent his apostle Paul to Corinth
and there assured him, “I have many people in this
city” (Acts 18:10).
Paul began his mission work in Corinth during his
second missionary journey. Paul's second mission-
ary journey had taken him through Syria, Cilicia,
and Galatia to strengthen the churches there. He
then passed through Asia Minor, crossed the Aegean
Sea to Macedonia, the northern Roman province of
Greece, and established the congregations in
Philippi, Thessalonica, and Berea. After a short visit
in Athens he traveled to Corinth.
According to Acts 18 upon his arrival in Corinth he
met a Jewish man named Aquila and his wife
Priscilla, who were tentmakers. They asked Paul,
who was a tentmaker like themselves, to stay and
work with them. Paul worked as a tentmaker during
the week and on the Sabbath days he reasoned
with the Jews in the synagogue. From the Old
Testament Scriptures he tried to persuade the Jews
and Greek converts to Judaism that the promised
Messiah was Jesus Christ. When Silas and Timothy
came from Macedonia and rejoined Paul in Corinth,
he began to devote himself exclusively to preaching
the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Jews in the
synagogue. When they hardened their hearts to the
gospel of Jesus Christ and opposed Paul, he turned
to the Gentiles in Corinth.
Paul had succeeded in gaining some converts from
the synagogue. Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue,
was one such convert, as well as his household.
Another was Titius Justus, who lived next door to
the synagogue. With these new converts Paul started
the church of God in Corinth. He set up his mission
headquarters in the house of Titius Justus. There
he proclaimed the gospel of Jesus Christ, and “many
of the Corinthians who heard him believed and were
baptised” (Acts 18:8). This is how the church in
Corinth was established. Paul remained in Corinth
for more than one and a half years, ± A.D. 51 to 52.

awesome topics; he plunges us
immediately into the heart of

significance of what takes place
in the story and gives us clues
as to what to watch for.

Explanation (stanza 1 - 3):

John the Baptist The Greek for “word” is Logos and is rich in meaning: "speech,"
"account," or "reason", etc. The endless reflection refers to “the
Word was with God” and which “was God”. Everything came forth
from God, therefore initially everything was in Himself in perfect
form. The Word emerging refers to Jesus who came forth from the
Father. Creation came from the idea that there is more than just
“being”. Otherwise God would have stagnated.
Reflection leads to wisdom which needs to be expressed by a
speaker, which is Jesus. But these words so spoken have such
power that whatever God thinks or wishes and then speaks out,
Andrew He speaks it into being and even galaxies may then exist.
Nothing that God does is without deep thought and godly purpose.
God is spirit (man is only soul) and gives of His spirit as a guiding
light of wisdom to navigate this world with its darkness and pitfalls.
This light is inherently part of Jesus who in turn is of the same
nature of God. He becomes the rescue vehicle (an ark) for those
who accepted Jesus Christ as Saviour. For them He is also an
example that is given to us to be able to live the Christian Life
while we are renewed in our inner being by a reborn spirit.

Preparation for Ministry
The preparation takes place in
two stages. As in the other Gos-
pels, Jesus' ministry begins in the
context of the Baptist's ministry
(Mt 3:1-17 par. Mk 1:2-13. Lk 3:1-22).
In John, the Baptist acknowledges
that the Spirit's descent upon
Jesus at his baptism is what
enables him to recognize Jesus
(1:32-33), but the event itself is
not recounted. The emphasis is
on the Baptist's testimony arising
from this event (1:34). It is when

the Baptist identifies Jesus as the
Lamb of God in the hearing of
some of his disciples that they
become his first followers (1:35-37).
The second stage is the gathering
of disciples around Jesus, begin-
ning with two of the Baptist's own
disciples. This section offers
many insights into the nature of
discipleship. It is also striking for
the number of titles given to Jesus
right from the outset, including
Son of God (1:34, 49). These
titles are part of the preparation
for the glory, though the charac-
ters in the story do not yet
understand their true significance.
The section closes with Jesus'
promise that they will "see heaven
open, and the angels of God
ascending and descending on
the Son of Man" (1:51), which
prepares us for the revelation of
God's glory that follows.

Explanation (stanza 4 - 11): John came to give testimony of Jesus

but in spite of this testimony, people still did not believe Him. He
came to reveal the Father as only He could. Jesus was also the
One that would baptize in another way: with the Holy Spirit. The
strongest part of John’s testimony was the descending of the dove and
God’s voice declaring Jesus as His Son. This is the Lamb of God!

 Five Lane Plan
This is a reading program which has been designed to meet the difficulties of boredom and repeatedly
starting over at Genesis after giving up. According to this plan the Bible has been divided into 5 Sections.

Section 1: Beginnings: Genesis to Ruth (236 Chapters)

This section talks about the beginning of God's creation, the origin of sin, suffering and death on earth.
It also talks about the flood of Noah's time, the calling of Abram, the lives of Isaac, Jacob and Joseph.
It talks about how the people of Israel went down to Egypt and came back through a mighty deliverance
under the leadership of Moses, the institution of the Passover, the giving of the ten commandments and
various other laws, the setting up of God's tabernacle, and the conquest of the Promised Land under the
leadership of Joshua. Finally, it talks about the period when judges ruled the land and about the marriage
of Boaz to Ruth, who together then became the ancestors of David.

Section 2: Nation Building: 1 Samuel to Job (242 Chapters)

This section talks about how the nation of Israel consolidated itself, first under Samuel, who was the last
judge of Israel and then under Saul, the first king of Israel. It gives us a detailed account of David's life
and reign; followed by the reign of his son, Solomon, and his building of the temple of God in Jerusalem.
It also talks about how the kingdom was divided into two and how they kept sinning against God and how
God finally allowed Assyrian and Babylonian armies to destroy their nation. This section also contains
the stories of the rebuilding of the Jerusalem wall and the temple under the leadership of Nehemiah and
Ezra, when the people return from exile and also carries the story of Esther, who spoke up for God's
people in crisis. Finally this section ends with the story of Job's life; his loss, suffering and restoration.

Section 3: Poetry: Psalms to Song of Songs (201 Chapters)

This section mainly consists of poetry. It begins with Psalms which are actually sung in the Hebrew
language. They reflect human experiences, emotions, man's longings for God and contain praise, thanks-
giving and worship. It has inspired people down through the centuries. Most of the psalms were written
by David, ``Israel's singer of songs." This section also contains the Book of Proverbs which is fully of
wisdom for practical living. Then comes the Book of Ecclesiastes, which is a philosophical reflection on
life with the conclusion that fearing God and keeping His commandments is what matters at the end. The
final Book in this section is Song of Songs which praises the beauty of love in marriage.

Section 4: Prophets: Isaiah to Malachi (250 Chapters)

This section contains the writings of the prophets. These books contain some great visions of God, great
prayers, great promises, great warnings, great judgments and great prophecies of the salvation to come.
There are many great references to the restoration of the people of God from exile and judgment, the
plan of the new temple, and the coming rule of the Messiah at the end of Time. The Book of Isaiah has
been a favourite of Christians down through the centuries with its famous prophecies about Jesus' birth
and death. The Books of Ezekiel, Daniel and Zechariah are vital in understanding the message of
Revelation and God's plan for the end times. Malachi is the last book of the Old Testament. His was, in
a sense, the last voice of prophecy in the Old Testament. For the next 400 years there were no prophets
until the coming of John the Baptist who announced the arrival of Jesus Christ, ``the Lamb of God, who
takes away the sin of the world!''

Section 5: New Testament: Matthew to Revelation (260 Chapters)

This section contains the story of the birth, life, work, death, resurrection and ascension of the Lord Jesus
Christ. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are the four writers of the gospels containing the story of Jesus'
life. The Book of Acts is the story of the beginning of the Church; starting with the mighty outpouring of
the Holy Spirit on believers on the day of Pentecost. Then we have a lot of letters or epistles written by
Paul, Peter, James, John and Jude. Finally we have the Book of Revelation written by John while he was
at the island of Patmos in exile. It gives us the strong conviction that God is on His throne, and every
event of history is moving towards a God-destined end. It tells us that there is coming great and fearful
events in this world. It tells us that God has a special plan for the nation of Israel and that He will
intervene in world affairs and bring an end to war, sin, suffering and death. It also speaks of the final
doom of Satan and all his agents who led the world astray. The book of Revelation closes with the
promise that Jesus is coming soon!
Reading only from Monday to Friday you will finish this last section in week 52. Try it and be blessed!

Calvary speaks of the cross of Jesus where our new life started,

healing, forgiveness and daily renewal as our old life is crucified.
“Literal” means reflecting the essential or genuine character – it is
of the clearest kind as it represents the exact words of the original
text. To do so, this text adds words to interpret the original Greek
or Hebrew words in their literal sense. All these words are in italics.
Translation renders a text to have the same meaning in another
