BRIEF DISCUSSIONS ABOUT DEW TRACER TECHNOLOGY
The DEW TRACER is the most advanced water treatment control system available on the market today. The
design is based on 25 years of field research and a broad base of industries such as thermal power plants,
Captive power plants, HVAC, Air conditioning etc. experience and application. The introduction and use of the
DEW TRACER will dramatically change the standard for cost-efficient and reliable cooling tower control. The
DEW TRACER makes 3D TRACER technology more accessible. It is customizable to meet specific user needs,
yet offers the flexibility for future upgrades to utilize all features of 3D TRACER.
DEW TRACER is simple to use and feature powerful control algorithms that ensure tighter control, more
optimal performance, and requires a minimum of human oversight and testing. The end result is a better, safer,
more reliable system that runs more efficiently.
DEW TRACER is available with following features & functions but not limited to:
Efficient and reliable operation makes system protective against deposits, corrosion fouling &
microbiological growth.
Saves water & energy, discharge through blow down.
Avoid wastage of chemical through unnecessary blow down hence saves cost of chemical.
Controls pH at specified range hence protect the metal from acidic corrosion.
Reduces manual interferences hence avoid accidents on site through toxic chemicals.
Reduces operation cost of cooling tower.
Easy to use.

DEW TRACERWORKING PRINCIPLE FOR CLOSE LOOP SYSTEMS
Control of scaling, fouling and corrosion can be done by efficient dosing of inhibitor chemicals. Sensors detect
the parameters like pH, conductivity, ORP, polymers etc. in circulating water and the measured signal being
sent to comparator. Comparator compares the measured signal with the set point, and error is generated. This
error is fed to the controller; controller send the signal to actuator. Based on signal received from controller
actuator either opens valve or closed it to dose the chemical in cooling tower basin. This is a simple feedback
PLC controller as shown in the block diagram.
Cycle of concentration control is really quite simple, the amount of makeup added to the cooling tower is
monitored and a signal send by controller which activates the actuator. This actuator then controls the opening
of blowdown valve to discharge a proportional amount of bleed water from the cooling tower basin. For
example, if 1000 m3 of makeup was added to a system operating at 10 cycles, the timer would operate a 5 m3
flow controlled blowdown valve a total of 20 minutes to discharge the 10 m3 required to maintain 5 cycles in
the cooling tower.
Conductivity based blowdown control is based on measuring the conductivity (which is proportional to Total
Dissolved Solids) of the cooling water. When the conductivity reaches a control set limit, an automatic valve is
activated and high TDS content water is drained from the cooling water system. Replacing this blowdown with
new makeup water lowers the conductivity of the cooling water, deactivating the automatic valve.
