III- Learning Task

Teachers’ Activity Learners’ Activity

A .Daily Routine

Class please stand for a prayer. Ms. Biol

kindly lead the prayer.
Let us pray, in the name of father……
Take your seats now. Ms Secretary who is absent? Class Secretary will answer the question.

B. Motivation

Class, look at this picture. What have you seen

or observed on the picture? Ma’am I’ll try to answer.
Yes, Lance! There are seedlings in the picture ma’am.
Very good!
How about another picture? They are performing sowing of
Seeds
Yes, you’re right Christine

C. Review

Last meeting we discuss about Seeds.

What is seeds? Ma’am, seeds is a fertilized and ripened
ovule which may develop into a plant by
germination.
Then, What are the characteristics of a Good
Quality seeds? Damage free, viable, true-to-type, free from
mixtures, free from seed borne diseases,
and properly developed.
Very good!

D. Lesson Proper

After selecting your seeds, and before doing

Sowing of seeds for planting, you must also
Test the viability of your seeds. Nearly 50%
Of the local farmers who engage in small-scale
vegetable growing save their own seeds for next
planting season. This can be done provided that
the seeds are still viable during planting the
planting season. To be sure that the seeds
are viable, you have to conduct seed testing
and compute for the % germination.

By the way class what is Seed Testing? Ma’am,

Yes, John Mark. Seed testing is the operation involved in
determining whether or not seeds are viable
free from diseases, injuries and foreign
matters.
You’re right!
Who can give the methods of seed testing? Floating in water, Breaking the seed coat,
Winnowing, and germinating the seeds
using rag doll method, seed box, and petri
dish/plate method.
Very good.
Did you already know on what is rag doll method? Not so ma’am/yes ma’am.
Rag doll- is a method of testing seeds using a towel,
Who can give the steps of this method?
1. First is, we need to use a firm towel.
2. Wet the towel and allow free water to
drip off for a minute.
3. Lay the wet towel flat and add seeds.
4. Place the seeds you want to germinate
half of the towel and roll it into
moderately tight tube.
5. Place the tube in a jar or salable plastic
bag and place it in warm dark place.
Very good! Then, after 3 days,
You make the first germination count. Open the towel
and count the seedlings as you remove
them. After another 3 days make another count so that
you can determine the number of seeds germinated.

Another method is, we have the plate or petri dish method.

What is it all about? It is a method of germinating seeds with the
use of plate and tissue.
Yes, you’re right. Who can give the steps in this
germination process? 1. Prepare the plate that will be used.
2. Place damp tissue on top of the plate
used
3. Count seeds you want geminate. Place
another damp tissue paper on the top of the
seeds.
4. A little water from time to time will insure
adequate moisture.
Very good! Clap your hands to Ms. Sajulga
Did you understand class?
This time I will divide you into two groups,
First group will perform the rag doll method.
Second group will perform the petri dish/ plate method.
Please follow the procedure in performing the task given.
I will give you 10 minutes to do the activity. Yes ma’am.
Are you done the activity? Yes, ma’am.

In determining the percentage of germination

of the seeds, you have to follow the rules.
Will you please read the rule no. 1 Eloisa Mae. Rule 1. If you test 100 seeds, the number of
Seeds germinated equals the percentage
Germination of the seeds.

I have here the sample problem. Kindly read Charmel,

If you had 100 seeds of eggplant and only 85
germinated, what is the percentage of
germination?

Who wants to answer that problem? Yes, Hazel, Ma’am 85%

Very good!
How about Rule no. 2. Please read the rule. Rule 2. If you test less than or more than
100 seeds use the formula below in
computing the % of germination of the
seeds.
% G = No. of seeds germinated X100
No. of seeds tested
Sample problem:
Mr. Enriquez tested 55 seeds of hybrid tomato and
34 germinated. What is the percentage of germination
of the tomato seeds?
Who wants to solve the problem on the board? I’ll try ma’am.
Yes, Alexandra.
Very Good!
Kindly read the rule no. 3
Rule 3. If you found out that the % of
germination of your seeds is below 80%,
you need to adjust use the formula below in
adjusting the seed bulk.

So, here is the problem. Kindly read Ms. Agad,

You needed 500 seedlings to plant in your
garden. You have found out that the seeds
have only 75% of germination. How many
seeds will you sow?
Who can solve? Any volunteer?
Ma’am (student write his solution on the
board).

Very good. Any questions or clarifications?

None ma’am
E. Generalization

So who can give a summary of our lesson? Our topic for today is all about the different
methods of seed testing and determining
the percentage of seed germination.
Very good Lady Jane.
In addition ma’am.

Yes, lance. It is important to select good quality seeds to attain

quantity and quality harvest. Likewise, it is also
necessary to test your seeds before planting them
to economize time, labor and expenses.
When seeds fail to germinate, treat them to break
their dormancy period and to hasten seed
germination.
Very good!
F. Evaluation

Now let us apply what have you learned. Get one half sheet of paper and answer the
Following problem: 5 points each question.

1. Mr. Egnilan tested 125 seeds of hybrid tomato and 105 germinated. What is the percentage
of germination of the tomato seeds?
2. You needed 500 seedlings to plant your garden. You found out that your seeds have only
75% germination. How many seeds will you sow?

G. Assignment/Agreement

Copy your assignment and bring it tomorrow.

1. Sawdust or rice hull
2. Sieved sand
3. Manure
Yes ma’am
Okay, Mayden, please lead the prayer.
In the name of the father…….Amen.
Good bye class,
Good bye Mrs. Lopez, Thank you for
teaching us. God bliss you.
