Example – Roof Trusses

 A wide span roof consists of truss girders and a spine

truss as shown in the below figure. Applied load: dead
load 1 kN/m2, imposed load 0.8 kN/m2 (ignoring self-
weight of truss members). Steel Grade S355.

Design of truss girder

 Distributed load:
q = 1.351.0 + 1.50.8 = 2.55 kN/m2
 Concentrated loads:
P = qA1 = 2.5561.5 = 22.95 kN
 Truss girder design model:

 Reaction: W = PnP = 22.9520 = 459 kN

Determine member forces

F1

F2

F3

 Total force in vertical direction equal to zero 

F2
 Moments at nodes A (F3) and B (F1) equal to
zeros  F3 and F1

Design of Spine Truss

 Distributed load:
q = 1.351.0 + 1.50.8 = 2.55 kN/m2
 Concentrated loads:
P = qA2 = 2.55660/2 = 459 kN
 Spine truss model:

 Reaction: W = PnP = P10 = 4590 kN

 Determination of member forces is conducted in
the same way as done for the truss girder. 4
