THE AIR-CONDITIONING

SYSTEM & YOUR HEALTH

How does the air conditioning
system work?

Outdoor

Air-conditioning system:
FACTS 101
• Your home air conditioning system does NOT draw in air from the outside
hence the air you breathe is recirculated air.
• The air conditioning units harbours the most amount of bacteria and is one
of the most difficult to clean
• 90% of home owners have never cleaned the internal parts of their air
conditioners apart from washing the filters.
• Air cond service technicians only clean the physical dirt from the outside
compressor units
• Air conditioners with Ionizers are not able to purify the air coming out as
the air flowing is too fast for the ionizers to take effect
• More people fall sick from germs transmitted via air conditioning systems
than just physical contact from a contaminated surface
• Sick building syndrome is caused by air conditioning systems
Health impact
What we cannot see will do more harm than we realize. Air borne bacteria
and contaminants have caused more disease to spread via the air we
breathe in an enclosed environment like our office, schools, airplanes, cars,
homes and etc.

When the air-conditioner is switched off, the condensation that forms in the
ducting will allow bacteria to breed which consequently will have an impact
on a person’s health.

Re-circulated
air is a health
hazard

In such an environment, if one person sneezes, the germs are circulated to

others in the same environment via the air conditioning (HVAC) system.

Car air conditioning systems
Many people take for granted thinking that their car air-conditioning system
is clean and almost never bother to even replace the air-cond filter. Here
are some simple facts about the car air-conditioning system:-
• The car air-conditioner has more bacteria than your house toilet!
• Most people keep the air-conditioner in their car set on recycle mode
which circulates germs
• People with children have far dirtier cars than single or couples with no
children
• Car air conditioning systems contribute to many children’s respiratory
problems
• Due to warm and humid environment in the car, bacteria and germs
breed very easily and very quickly

Common Bacteria types
found in cars
Here are the 12 most commonly found bacteria in a car:-

(1) STAPHYLOCOCCUS EPIDERMIDIS - Predominantly found on the human skin.

(2) MICROCOCCUS LUTEUS - Common in the environment and normally found on skin and soil.
Does not normally cause disease.
(3) STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS - Some can cause food poisoning or major wound infections.
(4) ESCHERICHIA COLI - Unpleasantly, the presence of this in food and water is used as an
indicator of faecal contamination.
(5) BACILLUS MYCOIDES - A very common variety of bacteria found in the environment in soil,
water & boots, therefore in foot wells.
(6) PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA - Can cause infections of the skin, external ear canal & eye.
(7) CLOSTRIDIUM TETANI - They can germinate in wounds and produce a powerful toxin that
causes tetanus.
(8) STREPTOMYCES GRISEUS - Found in soil & the environment, the antibiotic streptomycin is
obtained from members of the genus.
(9) ASPERGILLUS SPP. - Fungi commonly found in nature. They are isolated from soil, plant debris
and the indoor air environment.
(10) CLADOSPORIUM SPP. - Pigmented moulds widely distributed in air and frequently isolated as a
contaminant on foods.
(11) PENICILLIUM SPP. - Filamentous Fungi. They are widespread and are found in soil, decaying
vegetation and the air.
(12) BACILLUS CEREUS - Can cause food poisoning or eye infections and infections of open
wounds.
