knowledge of instructional
approaches for a variety of
student groups, including
middle grade and
adolescent readers, talented
readers, readers with
special needs, and English
language learners, so that I
can better meet the needs of
a wide variety of learners.

My undergraduate studies
were in elementary
education, so I do not have
very much knowledge in
teaching reading and
writing in a secondary
classroom. In the past, I
have sometimes struggled
to meet the needs of my
talented readers, and
readers with special needs. I
do not have any experience
working with English
language learners, so this
would also be a good area
in which to focus my
learning.
SP Phonics and word
recognition is an area in
which there are so many
different approaches and
strategies to choose from.
Building a strong
foundation in this area is
crucial for beginning and
struggling readers.
SP. CA This is another area of
literacy where there are so
many different ideas and
approaches. Many teachers
feel overwhelmed trying to
understand how to balance

to learn more about literacy
instruction in the secondary
classroom.
During the 2015/2016
school year, I worked
closely with the gifted and
talented teacher at my
former school to develop
literature circles with a
group of students who were
reading well above grade
level.
7/28/19-During Literacy
721, I had the opportunity
to work with middle school
students during an inquiry
camp.
5/30/19-During Literacy
720, I had the opportunity
to practice a variety of
instructional approaches
during my one-on-one
tutoring sessions. I used a
sight word recognition
routine each week, and
introduced Making Words
for phonics practice.

ongoing. All of my
coursework is helping me
strengthen my knowledge
in a variety of areas of
literacy instruction.

At my former school, this is
an area that our staff often
struggled with. We received
a lot of professional
development on using
assessment to drive
instruction, but assessments
were often viewed as
something that we were
required to report out on,
rather than as essential part
of teaching and planning.
Because of my past
experience, I recognize that
this as an area in which I
would like to gain a lot of
knowledge, so that I can
help other teachers.
5/30/19-Literacy 765 was a
very informative class,
which helped me
understand the various
types of assessment
available, and how to
determine which ones are
authentic. I had the chance
to apply what I had learned
while assessing a child
throughout that course. I
also had an opportunity to
use both formal and
informal assessment during
Literacy 720, when I
worked one-on-one with a
student.
