Teaching Methodology Ar303B

Before writing about appropriate methodology to teach building construction wish to bring
these research questions and findings in notice which were originally a part of a paper at
Glasgow Caledonian University (UNITED KINGDOM) published by Cynthia ChinTian
Lee:

Findings in respect of each of the key research questions are as tabulated below:

Research Questions Findings

To what extent do the video and interactive The video and interactive PowerPoint has
PowerPoint slides help students to helped students to understand the
understand the ‘Measurement’ module? ‘Measurement’ module better to a large
extent.

Do the video and interactive PowerPoint The video and interactive PowerPoint has
slides help students to visualise in 3-D? not helped students to visualise in 3-D
better.

Do the video and interactive PowerPoint The video and interactive PowerPoint has
slides help students to understand building not helped students to understand building
construction drawings better? Construction drawings better.

Have the video and interactive PowerPoint The video and interactive PowerPoint has
slides help to deliver the module more helped to deliver the module more
efficiently? efficiently.

Have the video and interactive PowerPoint The video and interactive PowerPoint has
slides enriched the students learning Enriched students learning experience.
experience?

What we can take out from this research, our current PPT slides and videos need
reinforcement as they are not able to make students visualize 3D and Drawings efficiently.
That is where there is a need to add something else in our teaching aid or a tool or
something which will fulfill this gap.

Before coming up with possible solutions lets go through the syllabus once:

As per the university.

INTENT:
To familiarize the student with steel as a building material and understand its use in
buildings.
CONTENT:
UNIT I:

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION V / Ar. Rajeev Sharma 1

Teaching Methodology Ar303B
Introduction to structural steel, types of steel used in buildings
Joining details of various steel members
Market survey of available steel sections
UNIT II:
Steel foundations
Structural steel frame
UNIT III:
Steel support system for roofing
Steel trusses
Collapsible and rolling shutters, Case studies and construction yard exercises
UNIT IV:
Steel staircase, Metal stairs - types and construction details of steel stairs.
Steel Mezzanine floor
Steel cladding

While going through the syllabus it is found that explaining and understanding things by
physical scaled model would be much easier for both teacher and student. Therefore it is
proposed to introduce model exercise for most of the classes with graph sheets. A model
made by teacher which is going to be a part of theory lecture and later on independent
exercise by students over the same topic. Expected submission would be in form of model
and graph sheet. For the same there is a need to go along with workshop incharge.

This is going to be a studio where students will make model first and then from the model
they will develop drawings over graph sheets. By this we can make them visualize 3D in
a much better way which will help them understand drawing and relate with 3D.Theory
lecture will be delivered by PPT powered by 3D models every time.
