Over View
• International University of East Africa is one of
the many privately owned University in
Uganda. The University has 3 faculties
specialising in:
- Science and Technology
- Engineering
- Management & Business Studies
• The University started in 2011.
IUEA Vision & Mission
• To be a technological University of choice in
East and Central Africa region.

Mission
• To provide practical education necessary for
the development of the East and Central
African region
Composition of Students Body
• Students come from:
– Uganda
– Kenya
– Tanzania
– Rwanda
– Burundi
– South Sudan
– Somalia
– Madagascar
– Nigeria
– Gambia
– Democratic Republic of Congo
Higher Education Institutes in Uganda
• There are 35 higher education institutions in
Uganda and many more are being granted
permission to start business. Of the 35
institutions 5 are Government aided with 2
more government aided in the offing. These
are categorised into:
– Universities
– Degree awarding Institutions
– Diploma & Certificate awarding Institutions
Admission Requirements
• It is normally through the following entry
points:
– Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education with 2
principle passes and five passes at “O” level.
– Ordinary Diplomas
– Mature age entry
What is taught at Universities
• Universities in Uganda teach a variety of
disciplines although Government aided
Universities enjoy a wider variety ranging from:
– Medicine
– Engineering
– Humanities
– Education
– Development Studies
– Agriculture
– Mining etc.
What is taught at Universities….
• The privately owned universities are mainly
teaching Humanities and disciplines that don’t
require a heavy capital investment such as
Engineering. However some 2 or 3 have now
moved into Medicine and Engineering.
• Management, Information Technology and
Development Studies are the most popular
disciplines in Uganda at the moment.
Internationality
• Uganda is surrounded by Kenya, Tanzania,
Rwanda, South Sudan and Democratic Republic of
Congo. All these countries are represented in
Ugandan Universities but with minimal or no
formal procedures of how to handle
internationalisation of University activities
through:
– Teaching staff
– Programmes
– International student activities etc.
Teaching and Research
• Teaching is the predominantly done activity at
the departmental level where various
programmes and courses are housed and it is
then implemented by the faculties or schools.
• Research is predominantly done in
Government aided Universities since they are
well positioned to attract funding from
funding agencies that prefer to deal
Government aided Universities.
Teaching and Research……
• Private Universities struggle to spare money
from students’ tuition to invest in research.
• Strong evidence of research that inform
teaching is not common. However there is
evidence of many research activities taking
place in various universities.
Status of IUEA
• IUEA started in 2011 with 42 students in two
faculties.
• In our second year the population as risen to
460 in three faculties:
– Faculty of Management and Business Studies
– Faculty of Science and Technology and
– Faculty of Engineering.
(These programmes are handled by 68 lecturers and
25 administrative staff)

Issues of Corruption
• At the national level is the Inspector General of
Government (IGG)
• Public Accounts Committee (PAC) – a committee
of the Parliament of Uganda that deals more with
institutions’ levels of accountability.
• At University Level are both the External and
Internal Auditors
• The vertical hierarchy of approvals for any
payment.
