Answers:

1. Analyze parts of the learning activities throughout Module 1.

A. Learning Activity 1
LA1 gives us good information related to topic “Personal letter”. This material asks us
to understand the outcomes of learning. The material itself explains the certain parts (Social
function, text structure and lexico-grammatical feature) that we should learn in personal
letter. Then analyze the certain parts and their examples. We can see some examples of
personal letters with different purpose of writing. By seeing those, we can identify the certain
parts which are mentioned before. And some tasks to be done to support our knowledge in
understanding personal letter.

The three personal letters show some differences, yet they also share some similarities
in terms of social function, text structure, and lexicon-grammatical feature.

In terms of social function, they are generally written to help people in building and
maintaining personal relationship. But more than that, each sender has his/her own purposes.
The first letter specifically sent to reconnect, ask and share news to an old friend who lives
away. The second is sent to make a new friendship relation and the third is to respond the
previous letter sent to her.

In terms of structure, each of them has greeting, body of the letter, and closing. It is just
different in some detail part of each structure.

In terms of lexico-grammatical feature, all of them use simple present to tell personal
news, past tenses to share past experiences. But they are different in some features. The first
letter has the date written on top, using casual greeting ‘Dear Fatima’ and ‘Love’ in the
closing part showing close relation. The second and the third letter has no date and the
greeting is casual but not as intimate as the first letter.
B. Learning Activity 2
LA2 gives us good information related to topic “Announcement”. This material asks us
to understand the outcomes of learning. The material itself explains the certain parts (Social
function, general structure and lexico-grammatical feature) that we should learn in
announcement. Then analyze the certain parts and their examples. We can see some
examples of announcement with different purpose of writing and speaking. By seeing those,
we can identify the certain parts which are mentioned before. And some tasks to be done to
support our knowledge in understanding announcement.

Both printed and spoken announcements have the same general purpose, it is to share
information publicly about what has happened or will happen. The structure is not quite
different, with the heading at the beginning and followed by some details of the information.
The spoken announcement begins with greeting before coming to the point of announcement
while the printed forms usually have title on top of the announcement. Besides, in spoken
announcement, the introduction of the announcer is usually done at the beginning of the
announcement while the printed form is usually at the end of the announcement. Spoken
announcements also requires the speaker to pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation
to make the information clear while the printed one is focusing on the punctuation marks and
other requirements of a good writing.

C. Learning Activity 3
LA3 gives us good information related to topic “Analytical Exposition”. This material
asks us to understand the outcomes of learning. The material itself explains the certain parts
(Social function, general structure and lexico-grammatical feature) that we should learn in
analytical exposition. Then analyze the certain parts and their examples. We can see som e
examples of analytical exposition. By seeing these, we can identify the certain parts which
are mentioned before. And some tasks to be done to support our knowledge in understanding
analytical exposition.

An analytical expository text should be well-planned and well-structured to be a good


one. It is structured respectively from thesis to introduce the case and writer’s position,
Arguments to support his position, and reiteration to strengthen the thesis. Through a good
analytical exposition, the writers are able to persuade the reader that the case he is talking
about is important by stating strong arguments to support his position. Arguments are well
supported with clear explanations and evidences.

D. Learning Activity 4
LA4 gives us good information related to topic “Hortatory Exposition Text”. This
material asks us to understand the outcomes of learning. The material itself explains the
certain parts (Social function, general structure and lexico-grammatical feature) that we
sould learn in hortatory exposition text. Then analyze the certain parts and their examples.
We can see some examples of hortatory exposition text. By seeing these, we can identify the
certain parts which are mentioned before. And some tasks to be done to support our
knowledge in understanding hortatory exposition text.

Hortatory exposition text, which aims to persuade the readers about what they should
do and should not be done, consists of thesis as the introduction of the idea/phenomenon that
will be discussed. Then followed by an argument which contains the opinions to make the
idea proposed by the writer trusted. And the last is recommendation which states the writer’s
suggestion to do or not doing something regarding things have been discussed.

A. Learning Activity 1
 Strength: LA1 has very good and clear information. The material clearly shows some
impotant points and gives some writtten examples and videos of making personal letter.
Also there are 6 tasks to be done that can help us in understanding the material with
detail instructions.
 Weaknesses : Altough LA1 has clear infomation and the material explains briefly. But,
there is one activity which has no task to make a personal letter. the learning activity
one 1 task 1 make the students confused, because it asked the asignment but after
checking the task there is no detail instruction.

B. Learning Activity 2
 Strength: LA2 has very good and clear information. The material clearly shows some
impotant points and gives some writtten examples and interesting videos of
announcement. Also there are 7 tasks to be done that can help us in understanding the
material.
 Weaknesses: Altough LA2 has clear infomation, and the material explains briefly. the
written explanation about the spoken announcement is not really detail. So the students
have a difficulty to differentiate the structure between spoken announcement and written
announcement.

C. Learning Activity 3
 Strength: LA3 has very good and clear information. The material clearly shows some
impotant parts and gives some writtten examples and videos of how to write an
analytical essay. Also there are 6 tasks to be done that can help us in understanding the
material with detail instructions.
 Weaknesses: Altough LA3 has clear infomation, and the material explains briefly. But
in reflective summary, there is an instruction to write the reflection on the sheet
provided. On the contrary, I don’t find any sheet provided, even I can’t reply the task.

D. Learning Activity 4

 Strength: LA4 has very good and clear information. The material clearly shows some
impotant points and gives some writtten examples and videos of how to write an
hortatory exposition text. Also there are 2 tasks to be done that can help us in
understanding the material with detail instructions.
 Weaknesses: Altough LA4 has clear infomation, and the material explains briefly. I
think on the material of hortatory exposition text, the example of the text is needed
before the students do the given task. Sometimes, it will be a little bit difficult for some
students to just learn something in detail without an example.

3. Share your opinion about the contribution of this particular module to improve your
professional competencies.

In my opinion, the module 1 provides very good and clear information about the
materials. Moreover, it gives some good examples, interesting videos and various tasks
related to the topics. After learning the materials, I get many information and understand the
content of the topics and some important points. I can also produce other examples of my
own personal letter, announcement, analytical exposition text and hortatory exposition text.
In other words, these help me improve my professional competencies in mastering my field
and use them in my teaching process.
