Physical Discrimination
Jane: Hi! Can I be friends with you?
Shannon: Ew, no. You're ugly!

Have you ever been like Shannon? Have you ever belittled someone because
of their physical appearance? If yes then do you know that what you're doing
is Physical Discrimination?

It is treating someone unfavorably

because of their height, weight,
size, shape or another bodily
characteristic. These also include
facial features, hair and birthmarks.

It happens almost everywhere.

Airlines require aspiring flight attendants to be in a certain height and weight.
Fast food chains only recruit persons with a specific 'look'.
And recently, Disney casts Halle Bailey, a black woman, as the
new Ariel. Fans bombard Disney with countless offending social-
media posts aghast that they changed the race of their beloved
Ariel. Some (white) and people who consider themselves as
“master races” feeling a sense of ownership of a symbol from their
childhood are trying to use wacky arguments to 'keep Ariel white'.

Unfortunately, there is none. But in other

countries, like Victoria's anti-discrimination
law or Equal Opportunity Act 2010 protects
people from discrimination and harassment
in areas of public life such as workplaces,
schools, clubs, shops or places that provide
services.
Recognizing exactly how this affects an individual
is much less understood. Previous studies have
found that discrimination, racism and harassment
may have significant mental and physical health
consequences such as frustration, stress, anxiety,
depression, and possible nervous breakdown.

Everybody deserves to feel beautiful. It is a God-given right to look in the

mirror and love what you see. Never mind the imperfections – nobody’s
perfect, after all. People’s biggest mistake is that they tend to get so caught
up in what they are lacking, they forget to appreciate what they have. Let’s
celebrate each size, shapes and forms and build a more inclusive community
that values everyone.
