Firmness after Ramadan – Part II

Introduction

 Acquiring knowledge is a worship, even though we are sitting and listening, our intention has to be
for the sake of pleasing Allah.
 After Ramadan we need firmness and it is an action of Allah, and Allah will keep a person firm until
the time of death.
 We have to take the means so that Allah may make us of firm – actions of the heart and actions of
the limbs.
 The need to Allah should be established in your heart and fear that you could be deprived from all
the good actions after Ramadan. The feeling of neediness and fear makes you put reliance in your
heart. And finally we need ihsan and we need to abandon all that does not concern us.
 If you’re heart is occupied with all that does not concern you, it will be distracted from loving Allah.
In order to collect your heart, you need to abandon all that does not concern you – ask yourself is
that beneficial for my religion?

Actions of the limbs in order to stay firm:

(1) Means to Firmness upon a Straight Path: Take care of righteous deeds – even if little

 Take care of righteous deeds, even if they are little.
(The Prophet was asked, "What deeds are
loved most by Allah?" He said, "The most regular constant deeds even though they may be few." He
added, 'Don't take upon yourselves, except the deeds which are within your ability.") – Al Bukhari
 If you fast 3 days a month, every month, then it is as if you have fasted the whole year. Even if just
one day a month, then that keeps you away from the hellfire 70 years, as long as done consistently.
 Allah opens the gates of goodness according to what suits each person. And the gates of goodness
are abundant, there is fasting, acquiring knowledge, teaching, Quran, helping others, so keep hold of
the gate that opens for you.

(2) Means to Firmness upon a Straight Path: Ihsan with the Quran

 Allah said the Quran is a Light and a Spirit. We want the recitation of the Quran that will have an
impact on the heart and behavior. This is ihsan with the Quran.
 Quran should be recited and understood what Allah is saying – it is the speech of Allah, Allah has
spoken with these words. Angel Jibreel (as) heard it and he brought it down to the Prophet
Mohammed (pbuh). You get rewarded 10 hasanat for each letter.
 Nowadays, we need the Quran more than ever. Especially, in these times of trials, where people are
killing and you do not know who is right and wrong, so we need the Quran more than ever in these
times of trials.
 We need to ponder the Quran, to think deeply in one verse, what does Allah want me to do – this
will lead to action.

 Difference between tafseer and tadabur; tafseer is to know the meaning, tadabur is more than
tafseer in which it leads to action. The Quran has rights upon us.
 Allah will ask us on the Day of Judgement, did we give the rights of the Quran. And the first right is
tadabur.

Say (O Muhammad
SAW) Ruh-ul-Qudus [Jibril (Gabriel)] has brought it (the Qur'an) down from your Lord with truth, that it
may make firm and strengthen (the Faith of) those who believe and as a guidance and glad tidings to
those who have submitted (to Allâh as Muslims).)

 What does nurturing mean? Allah wills to upgrade us from a deficient state to a better state, to
elevate us, to make us better people, to make us suitable to His nearness on the Day of Judgment.
Sending down the Quran is one of Allah’s special nurturing.
 All of us are travelling to Allah – we will be meeting Allah sooner or later. While we are walking to
Allah, there is only one way. Any other way is deviation.
 Now, in this life, you do not know which way is it – so Allah is saying the Quran is a light, it tells you
what Allah likes and what Allah hates.
 While you are walking to Allah, you need strength and power, the Quran is a Ruh, it is a Spririt, that
will give the strength and motivation to walk to Allah.
 The person without a spirit is considered dead – so whoever does not have Quran in heart, then it is
as if he is a dead person, blind in darkness.
 We are in trials continuously in this life – in order to pass a test, you need to prepare, you need
study the books, the curriculum. What is our curriculum, book to study in this life? It is the Quran.

But whosoever turns
away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Qur'ân nor acts on its teachings) verily, for him is a
life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection.")

 Whoever turns away from the reminder from the Quran, there will be no light of the Quran in the
heart, he will be living a distressed life, a constricted heart in this life, and on the Day of Judgement,
he will be blind.
 The recompense is equal to the sin, just as the one who was blind to Allah’s verses, is blind on the
Day of Judgement and Allah is never unjust to His slaves.
Surah Ibrahim 1: (‫
Râ. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur'ân, and none but Allâh (Alone) knows their
meanings]. (This is) a Book which We have revealed unto you (O Muhammad SAW) in order that you
might lead mankind out of darkness (of disbelief and polytheism) into light (of belief in the Oneness of
Allâh and Islâmic Monotheism) by their Lord's Leave to the Path of the All-Mighty, the Owner of all
Praise)

 It means we are all in darkness. How do you know if you are in darkness? If you are unable to make
the right decision, or confused on what path to take? These are considered darkness, and Allah is
saying that the Quran will take you out of the darknesses to the light with your Rabb’s permission.

 The Quran is a means of firmness in the right path.

Examples of those in Darkness and what is the Light to act upon:

They are the ones who say: "Spend not on those who are with Allâh's Messenger, until
they desert him." And to Allâh belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites
comprehend not.)

 Whenever Allah mentions the hypocrites or disbelievers in the Quran, do not say that is not me,
Allah is telling us in order to warn us to not be like this.
 Hypocrites are those who show belief from the outside, but it is not their heart. They will
accompany them in their gatherings, prayers, classes. Their names are Muslims and they look like
Muslims, but in their hearts is disbelief or hatred to Allah’s religion or part of Allah’s religion, which
are related to their desires, or to have doubts in the religion, or doubts in the articles of faith.
 You can know the hypocrites by their speech and writing, they are criticizing the symbols of Islam,
hijab.
 The darkness is they think if they do not spend on the Prophet (pbuh), or his companions that Islam
will become weak. The light is that to Allah belongs all of the treasures on earth, and Allah will bring
people who will spend.

Surah Al Isra’a 7:
And We said): "If you do good, you do good for your ownselves, and if you do
evil (you do it) against yourselves." Then, when the second promise came to pass, (We permitted your
enemies) to disgrace your faces and to enter the mosque (of Jerusalem) as they had entered it before,
and to destroy with utter destruction all that fell in their hands.)

 If you do good, you will do good to yourself. And if you do evil, it will turn against you – this is a light
from the Quran. What will be your attitude? To do good. For example, you are a teacher and you
put this verse in front you, will you never be bored, or complain? No, you will be good to the
students, and you will have ihsan and perfecting the deed.
 Or even mothers, especially with young kids, screaming, want peace of mind, but if she knew about
that verse, she would know that she is benefitting from it.
 And this verse will keep a person to continue the good deeds and not slacken. She will not wait for
the people to come to ask for help, she will offer to help. Why? Because she wants the good for
herself.

(O you who believe! When you are told to make
room in the assemblies, (spread out and) make room. Allâh will give you (ample) room (from His Mercy).
And when you are told to rise up], rise up. Allâh will exalt in degree those of you who believe, and those
who have been granted knowledge. And Allâh is Well-Acquainted with what you do.)

Page 3

 If you need to make room, then make room, it is a command from Allah. And Allah says He will give
you space. He does not say when or where? So it is open, it can be anytime, anyplace. It could be
space in your heart, or space in your grave. Subhan Allah.
 You can especially see this attitude among the harem. Some will make space and same will stretch
and say there is no space. Subhan Allah.
 Indication of a person who has a broad heart and not constricted heart, he will smile and bear the
harm from others, and receive it with a good heart, you will not feel bad about it.

(3) Means to Firmness upon a Straight Paths: Abandon injustice, oppression:

 (‫ )ُّلم‬is to put something in its wrong place, whether utterance, or action. The first (‫ )ُّلم‬is to wrong
himself. How does one wrong himself? By sin, and the worst is shirk, then comes major sins, then
minor sins.
Messenger of Allah (PBUH)
said, "Beware of injustice, for oppression will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection) – Muslim
 Transgressing against oneself is sin, and sins are darknesses on the Day of Judgement, who wants to
be in darkness on the Day of Judgement?
 Also wronging others, like backbiting, slandering, or even suspecting the people. The place of
suspicion is in the heart, for example, she is the one who stole my watch, and Allah will show you
that you were wrong. Now you earned a sin for yourself. The path to Allah is one, anything else is
deviation, which is (‫)ُّلم‬.

(4) Means to Firmness upon a Straight Path: Remembering Allah profusely:

O you who believe! Remember Allâh with
much remembrance. (41) And glorify His Praises morning and afternoon [the early morning (Fajr)
and 'Asr prayers]. (42) He it is Who sends Salât (His blessings) on you, and His angels too (ask Allâh
to bless and forgive you), that He may bring you out from darkness (of disbelief and polytheism) into
light (of Belief and Islâmic Monotheism). And He is Ever Most Merciful to the believers.)
 Remember Allah much and glorify Him morning and evening. Morning and evening supplications,
after fajr and asr prayer.
 What does Allah’s salat mean on His slave? Allah praises you to the angels. And the angels are
praying for you, and they ask Allah’s forgiveness and mercy for you. We are sinful people.
 And what is the impact of Allah’s salat? Allah will take you out of the darkness into light. When you
are confused, do not know what to do, what decision? Remember Allah – read the Quran, glorify
Him, or a study circle which is remembering Allah.
 Allah will not ask us beyond what we can bear.

(5) Means to Firmness upon a Straight Path: Be a Key for Goodness and not for Evil:

 Hadith: (With Allah are the treasures of good and evil, the keys for these treasures are humans,
Tooba (glad tidings) for whomever Allah makes a key for good and closure for evil, and woe for
whomever Allah makes a key for evil and closure for good. )

Page 4

 How can we be a key to open the good? With one’s wealth, build orphanage, mosque, hospital. Or
you have a position in the community, so you can help the people in good. One can be a key for
good according to his ability. Don’t be a key to evil. If two people are fighting, advise them, make
them reconcile – be a key for good. Don’t make them hate each other and make them more distant,
don’t be a key for evil.

(6) Means to Firmness upon a Straight Path: Beware of Bad Company and Accompany the Righteous

And keep yourself (O Muhammad SAW)
patiently with those who call on their Lord (i.e. your companions who remember their Lord with
glorification, praising in prayers, and other righteous deeds) morning and afternoon, seeking His
Face, and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of the world; and
obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our Remembrance, and who follows his own
lusts and whose affair (deeds) has been lost.)
 Hadith: (‫( )المرءَعلىَدينَۡليله‬A person is upon the religion of his friend)
 If you want to know a person, look at who he is accompanying.

And (remember) the Day when the
Zâlim (wrong-doer, oppressor, polytheist) will bite at his hands, he will say: "Oh! Would that I had
taken a path with the Messenger ( Muhammad SAW). (27) "Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never
taken so-and-so as a Khalil (an intimate friend)! (28) "He indeed led me astray from the Reminder
(this Qur'ân) after it had come to me. And Shaitân (Satan) is to man ever a deserter in the hour of
need.")

the musk seller and the blacksmith's bellows (or furnace); from the first you would either buy musk
or enjoy its good smell while the bellows would either burn your clothes or your house, or you get a
bad nasty smell thereof.) – Al Bukhari.
 The musk owner either will give you perfume or make you smell good. Bellows will either dirty your
clothes or get a bad smell. Look at your companions, are they carrying musk or blowing bellows.
 What will you get from the good company:
1. Will gradually become like them, even if not good, will be good and pious
2. The believer is like a mirror to his companions, the person will see his defects, for example: he is
not doing something and sees his friend is doing it, so he will be learning
3. Will abandon committing the sins, he will feel shy in the beginning in front of others, but then
he will be shy in front of Allah
4. One of the followers was travelling from Kufa to Sham, prayed two units asking for the good
companion. He saw a gathering and a man sat right next to him. Who sat next to him? Abu
Darda’a (companion of the Prophet (pbuh)! Subhan Allah.

5. They will advise you, support you, and after your death, they will be invoking Allah’s forgiveness
for you. Even after your death, they will continue praying for you.
6. Means of attaining Allah’s love.

said: No, excepting this that I love him for the sake of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious. Thereupon
he said: I am a messenger to you from, Allah: (to inform you) that Allah loves you as you love
him (for His sake)) – Sahih Muslim.
7. They respect the absence of their companions. They will not criticize or defame him if not there
8. Sitting in company of righteous people is like a fortified fortress against the shaitan. If alone,
then the shaitan will come to him and deviate him.
 Accompaniment of evil companion:

world), (51) Who used to say: "Are you among those who believe (in resurrection after death).
(52) "(That) when we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed (be raised up) to receive
reward or punishment (according to our deeds)?" (53) (The speaker) said: "Will you look down?"
(54) So he looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire. (55) He said: "By Allâh! You have
nearly ruined me. (56) "Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I would certainly have been
among those brought forth (to Hell).")
2. He will place doubts and affect the religion of the person.
3. The bad companions have to all follow each other and be like them, otherwise they forsake him
4. Bad companions introduce one to other bad companions like him
 Love for the sake of Allah is because she is righteous, she reminds me to worship Allah. Love for the
sake of Allah is not easy, when you say I love you for the sake of Allah, you will be responsible for it.
 If you fulfill the following conditions then you are truthful to love for the sake of Allah:
1. To be an advisor
2. To support to stop from committing sin
3. To support in obedience of Allah
4. To defend her honor, especially when absent
5. Invoke the good for her
6. To visit them if they become sick
7. To help in worldly affairs, jobs, transportation, change homes
8. To love the good for her, as you love it for yourself
9. To hate the evil for her, as you hate it for yourself
