Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

Ideally you should kick off at some place other than the actual Church, ‘cause you’re gonna have a
procession. Wherever that place is, the Mass actually starts there, not at the Church. And have your palms
blessed there.
Except for the Gospel reading last year, which was taken from Matthew—parehas lang. This year it’s from
Mark.
Reading at the blessing of palms: In Mark 11:1-10, or John 12:12-16, Jesus instructs two apostles to go get
the colt that they shall find in the next village. These two do so. Riding that, Jesus triumphantly enters
Jerusalem, as people lay their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches and lay them down and sing
“Hosanna. Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord. Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father
David! Hosanna in the highest heaven.”

Notes:

1. Turn down the mirth. Huwag mag-concert. Huwag bumirit.

2. Lent is the time for musical instruments also to be austere. Musical instruments during Lent should give
only the bare minimum or necessary support to the singing (the human voice). Sustenance lang po.
Halimbawa, ikaw ang instrumentalist, at alam mong dapat nang tumigil ang song dahil tapos na yung
movement ng tao from one place to another (this is called a procession). Pinagbabawal ng simbahan ang
instrumental solo kapag Lent. Huwag na pong lalagyan pa ng instrumentalist ng isang instrumental ending.
Silence is far better during Lent.
Kailangan: read: requirement: maramdaman and ma-realize ng mga taong assembled that this is a season
very different from other liturgical seasons.
3. Liturgical Color: Red.

Songs for the Procession:

Filipino:

1. Hosanna sa Anak ni David (Parungao)

2. Mabuhay ang Anak ni David

8. Krus ng Ating Kaligtasan (Bautista)
9. “Luwalhati at Papuri kay Kristong nagligtas” Hindi ko alam yung title eh. Pero eto na yung kinakanta ng
mga batang angel kapag dumating na yung crowd sa isa sa tatlong veranda/altar/station/whatever you
want to call it.

English:

1. Hosanna to the Son of David (Schutte)

2. All Glory, Laud, and Honor (Theodolph, Neale, Teschner)
3. Blessings on the King (Manion)
4. Hosanna (Haas)

In the first Mass, please consider the above as your entrance song to acknowledge that the Mass did not
begin at the Church, but at the place where the people had congregated. Pagdating ninyo sa simbahan,
opening prayer (collect) and then First Reading na kaagad.
For all other Masses during the day, the songs above shall serve as your actual entrance song, and the
common way of the order of the parts of the Mass follows.

Readings:

1R: Isaiah 50:4-7: I will not be disgraced.

I have not rebelled, and I have not turned back. I gave My back to those who beat Me, my cheeks to those
who plucked my beard; My face I did not shield from buffets and spitting.

RP: 22 “My God, my God, why have You abandoned Me?”

2R: Philippians 2:6-11 is about the emptying of Jesus:

Though Christ Jesus was in the form of God, He did not regard equality with God something to be grasped.
Rather, He emptied Himself, taking in the form of a slave.

G: Mark 14:1 - 15:47 or 15:1-39 is about the Passion and Death of Jesus

Filipino:

Walang Papuri.
Walang Aleluya. Palitan ng Verse before the Gospel.
Verse before the Gospel:

1. Wika Mo
2. Sing the verse to the tune of Pasyon.
3. Papuri sa ‘Yo Panginoon, Hari ng Kaluwalhatiang walang hanggan.
4. Papuri at parangal sa Iyo, Panginoong Hesukristo!
5. Luwalhati at Papuri sa Iyo, Panginoong Hesukristo!
6. Luwalhati sa Iyo, Salita ng Diyos, Panginoong Hesukristo!

By the way, kindly tell the sacristans bawal ang candles at this part. Sabihan nyo na rin si Father na dapat
hindi niya i-kiss ang Book of the Gospels pagkatapos niya magbasa.

Ngayo’y nagtitika’t nagdarasal sa ‘Yo.

Or ...Tanda ng bawat pusong, ‘pagkat inibig Mo,

Ngayo’y humihingi ng patawad sa ‘Yo.

koda:
Ngayo’y nananalig (nagsisisi)
Naglilimos (sumasamba)
Nagtitika’t (nagdarasal) sa ‘Yo.

Or Koda:

Ngayo’y nag-aalay (ng ayuno)

Naglilimos, (nagsisisi)
Nagtitika’t (nagdrasal) sa Yo.

This is a good Sunday to ask permission if you could sing your best and grandest Santo/Osana. If your
choir could do multiple voices, do so, or do it in Latin/Gregorian chant. Wag lang mag-over ha. Wag mag-32
voices hahaha. We still are in Lent, whensongs are toned down. If you do it acapella, that would be great,
kasi technically, wala kayong instrument, so technically you are not accompanied with music that during this
liturgical season should be of such quality that merely sustains the singing.

Do not sing the Dakilang Amen (Francisco).
