1. Speaker 1:
1) I`m from the north of England.
2) I live on the south coast and work in an office where there aren`t any other northerners.
3) My colleagues`re always commenting on my northern accent.
4) Everyone can understand what I say, but I get fed up when they copy the way I pronounce certain
words, like ‘bath’ instead of ‘bath’ and ‘bus’ instead of ‘bus’.
5) They don`t mean to be rude but it gets really annoying.
6) But there`s no way I`d want to try and sound like a southerner.
7) An accent represents where you come from and it`s a big part of what makes you who you are.
8) Anyway, it`d be boring if we all sounded exactly the same.

2. Speaker 2:
9) As an American woman living in London, I often notice people rolling their eyes when there`s a group
of loud Americans on the train.
10) I don`t think this is anything to do with their accents.
11) It`s just American tourists aren`t aware that they should lower their volume when they`re outside the
States and this could possibly be because they have a different attitude to privacy.
12) British people find this annoying because they don`t tend to talk much on public transport.
13) The exception to this are groups of young women, who can be very loud.
14) But the Americans aren`t actually being rude or arrogant.
15) They may even be hoping that you`ll join them in the conversation.

3. Speaker 3:
16) I work for a customer service helpline so I have to talk to customers all over the country on the phone.
17) I`ve got used to understanding all their different accents.
18) I enjoy interacting with customers but sometimes I`m tired of talking by the time I get home.
19) It`s important to be polite and cheerful all the time and some managers think women find this easier
because they think we`re naturally good at chatting and building relationships with people.
20) But I disagree with this; some of my male colleagues are brilliant with customers, while some female
colleagues really struggle.

4. Speaker 4:
21) I think men may be more aware of the importance of non-verbal communication, such as facial
expressions and body language.
22) This could be because they need to learn whether another male is aggressive or not.
23) It`s not a skill many women take much notice of, but these little clues can tell you an awful lot about
someone`s personality – in the same way their accent can tell you where they`re from.
24) When I was preparing for a job interview recently, I was advised not to touch my throat because
apparently this shows that you aren`t feeling confident or may not be telling the truth.

5. Speaker 5:
25) Personally, I have a weakness for the way the French speak.
26) There`s just something about it – whether the Frenchman`s speaking in his native tongue or in
English.
27) And I think a lot of my women friends feel the same way.
28) But interestingly, I read an article which said that Japanese people love the way Scottish people
speak, in particular people from Glasgow.
29) In a study, a group of Japanese people listened to different accents from around Britain and North
America and it was Glaswegian they liked best.
30) This is really surprising because most British people find people from Glasgow quite hard to
understand.
31) The article didn`t say which one they liked the least.

1. Orador 1:
1) Soy del norte de Inglaterra.
2) Vivo en la costa sur y trabajo en una oficina donde no hay otros norteños.
3) Mis colegas siempre comentan mi acento del norte.
4) Todos pueden entender lo que digo, pero me harto cuando copian la forma en que:
 Pronuncio ciertas palabras, como "servicio" en lugar de "baño" y "camión" en lugar de "autobús".
5) No pretenden ser groseros, pero se vuelve realmente molesto.
6) Pero de ninguna manera me gustaría intentar sonar como un sureño.
7) Un acento representa de dónde vienes y es una gran parte de lo que te hace ser quién eres.
8) De todos modos, sería aburrido si todos habláramos exactamente igual.

2. Orador 2:
9) Como una mujer estadounidense que vive en Londres, a menudo noto que la gente:
 Pone los ojos en blanco cuando hay un grupo de estadounidenses ruidosos en el tren.
10) No creo que esto tenga nada que ver con sus acentos.
11) Es solo que los turistas estadounidenses no son conscientes de que deberían bajar su volumen:

16) Trabajo para una línea telefonica de ayuda de servicio al cliente, así que:
 Tengo que hablar por teléfono con clientes de todo el país.
17) Me he acostumbrado a comprender todos sus acentos diferentes.
18) Me gusta interactuar con los clientes, pero a veces estoy cansado de hablar cuando llego a casa.
19) Es importante ser cortés y alegre todo el tiempo y algunos gerentes piensan que:

4. Orador 4:
21) Creo que los hombres pueden ser más conscientes de la importancia de:
 La comunicación no verbal, como las expresiones faciales y el lenguaje corporal.
22) Esto podría deberse a que necesitan saber si otro hombre es agresivo o no.
23) No es una habilidad que muchas mujeres presten mucha atención, pero estas pequeñas pistas:
 Pueden decirte mucho sobre la personalidad de alguien, de la misma manera que su acento puede
decirte de dónde son.
24) Cuando me estaba preparando para una entrevista de trabajo recientemente, me aconsejaron:
 Que no me tocara la garganta porque aparentemente esto demuestra que no se siente seguro o
que no está diciendo la verdad.

5. Orador 5:
25) Personalmente, tengo una debilidad por la forma en que hablan los franceses.
26) Hay algo al respecto, ya sea que el francés hable en su lengua materna o en inglés.
