ABSTRACT
The project management techniques of planning scheduling and controlling are used to
complete the project within the stipulated time, scope, quality and cost. This paper tries to
explain construction companies are also narrowing the focus and becoming specialist in
certain types of construction project. In the current world, construction projects are
becoming bigger with a lot of complications. This specialization requires more focused
project planning and controlling techniques that prove to be better for certain types of
projects. The benefit of effective planning is reduced construction time reduced cost overruns
and minimization of disputes. This study will focus on the comparison of construction
scheduling techniques like Gannt chart and CPM. The traditional approach for scheduling
progress monitoring techniques like bar charts, Critical Path Method (CPM), Programme
Evaluation Review Techniques (PERT). To develop scheduling using primavera project
planner software.

OBJETIVES OF THE PROJECT:
To identify construction sequence for a residential building construction.
To workout the practical durations required to carry out the activities.
To identify scheduling techniques used by the organization in developing plan
and scheduling.
To develop scheduling using primavera project planner’s software.
To track the project and analyze the reasons for delays, and increase in
estimated budget etc.

CRITICAL PATH METHOD
Identifies those chains of activities (critical paths) that control how long a project
will take.
Two variations:
Activity –on-Arrow(AOA)
AOA is the activities are the arrows (or) lines.
Activities –on-Node(AON)
AON is also known as a precedence diagram, activities are nodes
connected together by lines.
STEPS OF CRITICAL PATH METHOD
STEP 1: Activity specification
The work breakdown structure (WBS) to identify the activities involved in
the project. This is the main input for the critical path method.
In activity specifications only the higher level activities are selected for
critical path method may become too complex to manage and maintain.
STEP 2: Activity sequence establishment
In this step, the correct activity sequence is established for that, need to ask
three questions for each task of list.
Which task should task place before this task happens.
Which tasks should be completed at the same time as this task.
Which tasks should happen immediately this task.
STEP 3: Network diagram
Once the activity sequence is correctly identified, the network diagram can
be drawn.
STEP 4: Estimates for each activity
This could be a direct input from the WBS based estimation sheet. Most of the
companies use 3-point estimation method or COCOMO (function point based)
estimation methods for tasks estimation.
3
STEP 5: Identification of the critical path
Need to determine four parameters of each activities of the network:
Earliest start time (EST): The earliest time an activity can start once the
previous dependent activities are over.
Earliest finish time (EF): ES + activity duration.
Latest finish time (LF): The latest time an activity can finish without
delaying the project.
Latest start time (LST):LF –activity duration
This gives more realistic figure for the deadline and the project
management can know whether they are on track regarding the deliverables.

CONCLUSION
Poor time and cost performance are major problems faced by today’s
construction industry. The main objective of this project is to prepare the proper
planning and scheduling and timely completion of two story residential building work
construction at Coimbatore. This objective was achieved through revision of
literatures and methodologies involved in time monitoring and control. This project is
mainly done using Primavera P6, project management software. All activities and
their sequence of occurrence, duration, and resources and their planning, scheduling of
two story residential building work construction was completed. This project can be
completed before the contract duration and reduced time cost and all resources.
