Why We Come to Worship

Many years ago I read the novel This
Present Darkness by Frank Paretti. The
story is about a town being overtaken by
evil and the faithful church members who
stood strong in the midst of difficult times.
Two of the characters are talking about the
hope that remains for the church and town
and the small remnant of people who
remain. One character says that he is
hopeful because, “there is always a
remnant.” In other words, there are always
people of faith who don’t give up, even
when it seems like they are defeated.
Those are the people who still faithfully
attend church each Sunday. Why?
• It connects with our daily life. It’s
relevant.
• We like the elements of the service:
music, sermon, format, etc.
• We have other activities going on that
day, but none more important than
worship.
• We don’t have to work.
• We don’t live far enough away to stop
us from coming.
• It’s a valuable use of our time.
• We are not scared of God or the
church.
• We can tolerate the pastor.
• We’ve forgiven the church.
• We don’t find online church more
convenient.
• We like the people we worship with.
• We took a vow to support the church
with our presence.
• We wouldn’t rather be somewhere else.
I hope that you will pray for our church.
We’ve got a committed core group of
people who remain. “Upon this rock I will
build my church,” said Jesus.
