GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE

ONE KofC COUNCIL
Brothers,

I hope all is well and you are enjoying the summer. We are off and running
with your new Council Officers and our members to make this Columbian
Year successful.

We had a great July! We held our TV Sports Night to see the Baseball
All-Star game and the evening was a success. Thank you Mike Olivo for
putting it together and Fred Hess for cooking the gourmet Steak and
onions and Shrimp Salad. The rice pudding was delicious. Also we held
the St. Anthony Church Picnic where over 30 Knights did it all from setup

In service We started our C&B Charity Book sales early this year and in our first two

give their time to this fundraiser as the Grand Knight I truly appreciate your
commitment.

Finally we will have our Officers Installations on August 11 th . We will meet

at St Marks Church in Shoreham for 11:30 Mass. From there we will go to
St Jude Council for the ceremony. At that ceremony we will be presenting the
two St Jude Council Scholarship Awards to the recipients.

The Knights and the Blessed Virgin Mary

Jesus admonished his followers (those first disciples and us today) that if we are looking for signs, none
will be given us other than the sign of Jonah. Yet it is not uncommon that in the midst of uncertainty, we are
tempted to seek signs and wonders to shore up our faltering faith or our questioning hearts.

Importantly, this temptation to seek signs is quite a different thing than another command of Jesus',
namely that we “read the signs of the times.” that is, that we be attentive to the manner in which God has
and is acting in the world and bestowing his grace upon us. For here, we are asked by the Lord to develop
sensitivity to divine action. Not in some superstitious way, as with three crows harboring death or ill fortune,
but in an authentically Christian way, whereby we discern God's movement in our lives and in the lives of
others. Of course, the distinction between superstitious seeking and faithful discernment is not always clear.

We can turn to the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the history of the Knights of Columbus to make this
point. It can be argued that not a page of Columbianism's history has turned without the influence and
protection of the Mother of God. From our order's beginning, the blessed mother has played a central role
in its growth and development.

intent upon heavenly things, we may
be worthy to be partakers of her glory.

Our founder, the venerable Michael McGivney, whose cause for sainthood continues to advance, was
baptized in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury, Connecticut. He studied in three
seminaries, two in the United States and one in Canada, all dedicated to the blessed virgin. He was
ordained in the beautiful Cathedral of the Assumption in Baltimore and began his priestly ministry at Saint
Mary's church in New Haven, the same church in whose basement he founded our fraternal order.
As faithful men of the church, we must be wary of the tendency to seek out “hidden” indications of the love
of God and, here specifically, of the Blessed Mother, over us.
We read in the book of Genesis that God so loved his new creation that the first gift he gave it was the gift
of a mother. God created the first woman, Eve, to be the mother of all creation (CF. Gen2:23; 3:20). She was
to be the woman, the one who would care for, nurture and protect all the living. Eve, however, through her
disobedience, gave up that title to be " mother of all the living." as a result of their disobedience, Adam and
eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden and the presence of the tree of life. Eve would no longer be the
mother of those who would live in god's presence, but instead be mother of all those destined to die.
As eve, the first woman, lost her title as " mother" through her disobedience, so Mary, the new "Eve," was
given the title of "mother" through her obedience to God's will. This is why Jesus says to St. John at the foot
of the cross: “behold your mother” (JN 19:27). And through him, Mary, the Mother of God, the new woman of
the second creation, was given to all humanity as its mother.
The history of the life of the Church and of the order of the Knights of Columbus testifies to the order's great
dedication to our Blessed Mother. As Knights of Columbus, therefore, let us renew our devotion to her.

Brothers,

So happy to see the Councils in our District so focused on a successful Fraternal year. It was a
tough year understanding the new Faith in Action program and you guys took the challenge and
exceeded all expectations. This year you really are hitting the ground running and have a
calendar set up for the up coming year.

Congratulations to our newest members that took their Degree July 25. Thank you Queen of all
Hearts for hosting this Degree and your Degree team did an outstanding job as always.

The Charity Ball was a success and well attended. Rick Mango, of Jay
and the Americans and his Grandson gave a memorable performance
along with the band. Congratulations to the raffle winners. Thank you to

Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney

God, our Father, protector of the poor and

defender of the widow and orphan, you called
your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be
an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the
young to the generous service of their neighbor.
Through the example of his life and virtue may
we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely,
fulfilling his commandment of charity and building
