5. Scope of Work
The following activities are covered under the scope of work to be performed by DYCE:

• Revise the cathodic protection design calculation as per actual site conditions.
• Supply of additional materials.
• Revise the construction drawings.
• Supervision during installation.
• Testing & Commissioning of CP system.
• Preparation of as-built drawings.

6. Soil Resistivity
For a satisfactory cathodic protection system design, it is necessary to determine the resistivity of
the electrolyte (backfill). This resistivity is used to calculate anode to electrolyte resistance and thus
has an effect on the quantity of anodes. The resistivity is also an indication of the aggressiveness of
the environment.

As per project specifications cleaned washed sand shall be used as backfill for the underground fuel
storage tanks. The clean washed sand backfill material is generally characterized by a very high
resistivity. For contingency Soil resistivity value of 100 Ωm is considered for the design purposes.

Prior to backfilling a sample of sand shall be tested for contamination (chlorides, sulphates, etc.).
Proposed sand shall have a pH value between 6 and 11.5.

7. Engineering Design

7.1. CP Current Density

In accordance with clause 1.8 of Section 16790 of Project Specification, this design is based in a CP
Current Density of 20 mA/m2 for bare carbon steel at 30°C to protect cathodically coated fuel tanks.

Considering the operating temperature of the tanks (See above section 2.0), correcting the CP
Current Density stated above is not required.

7.2. CP Design Life

In accordance with clause 1.8 of Section 16790 of Project Specification, sacrificial anode cathodic
protection system shall be calculated on a 20 years design life.

7.3. Coating Breakdown

Coating breakdown regarding the deterioration of the buried tanks coating during the CP System
operating life is 10% according to clause 1.8 of Section 16790 of Project Specification.

7.4. Electrical Isolation

All the calculations herein are based on the electrical isolation of the new underground fuel tanks
from the aboveground piping and earthing system. Tank construction contractor is the responsible
for designing, supplying and installing the isolation kit, where applies. Surge arrestor for hazardous
are installation shall be provided to protect the performance of the isolation joint/flange.

7.5. Anode Type

Anode details for sacrificial CP system are listed below.

7.6. Design Calculations for SACP System

The following sections include sample calculations used design of the cathodic protection system by
galvanic current for 4,000 US Gal. buried fuel tank. Results of all tanks are provided in dedicated
tables:

7.6.1. Area to Be Protected

Determination of fuel tank area to be protected cathodically begins with the calculation of the
external surface area in contact with the sand backfill. Below formula is an approximation to
calculate the area of bumped head vessels:

𝐴 " = 𝐴$ + 𝐴&

Substituting for buried tank:

𝐴E = 15.004𝑚,
Considering that the fixing bolts of the tanks installed without insulation washer, the addition
surface area for the 16 bolts is 0.001 m2. Hence, the total area to be protected shall be considered
as 15.005 m2.

7.6.2. CP Current Requirement

The following formula is used to determine the total cathodic protection current required protecting
temporary the total surface of the tank:
𝐼J × 𝐴E
𝐼J = K M

Where:

It Total CP current requirement (Amps)
