1.0 INTRODUCTION

This design note pertains to longitudinal design of PSC Girder of30.800 m c/c of bearings.

The overall span between c/c of E.J to c/c pier is 32m. The effective span proposed is 30.8m.
The pre cast length of the PSC Girder is kept 31.7m and deck slab is projected beyond end face
of the girder at either end.

The superstructure is designed as per IRC 112 : 2011. The superstructure is checked for ULS &
SLS as per the code.
1.1 MATERIALS AND PERMISSIBLE STRESSES

I. GRADE OF CONCRETE :M 45 for PSC Girder & M 45 for RCC Deck Slab

II. PRESTRESSING STEEL :12.7mm DIA, 7 ply class II, low relaxation strands confirming to IS 14268

1.2 SYSTEM OF PRESTRESSING

The PSC Girder will be Pre-Cast, Post – Tensioned prestressed. Cables made of 19 strands
12.7mm dia (7 ply) grouped together around a spiral core and properly tied along the length by
galvanized binding wire, will be placed inside a HDPE corrugated sheathing of 95mm dia.
Stressing will be carried out from both ends simultaneously. Hence Anchor cones will be
provided at both ends.

1.3 STAGE OF PRESTRESSING

The stressing operation will be carried out in one stage only.

1.4 DESIGN ASPECTS

I. P.S.C. Sections Under Considerations From Centre Line of Bearing i.e. Support, Which are
checked.
0.0 L Section i.e. At Support

0.1 L Section i.e. 0.1 x 30.8 = 3.08 m.

0.2 L Section i.e. 0.2 x 30.8 = 6.16 m.

0.3 L Section i.e. 0.3 x 30.8 = 9.24 m.

0.4 L Section i.e. 0.4 x 30.8 = 12.32 m.

0.5 L Section i.e. 0.5 x 30.8 = 15.4 m.

II. The bending moments and shear forces due to Dead Load, Super Imposed Dead Load and
Live Loads have been worked out based on Grillage analysis, considering center to center of
bearing as span length. The analysis is carried out with STAAD Software.

III. The friction and wobble co-efficient (m and k) for prestressing strands considered in the design are :
m = 0.17 per radian and k = 0.002 per m [ Table 7.1, page 64, IRC 112:2011]
Type of Duct : HDPE Dia of Duct = 95 mm

IV. The creep co-efficient, shrinkage strain and relaxation are considered as per the
formulationsof IRC 112. The 'Ec' modulus of Elasticity of Concrete is modified by the ratio 1/(1
+ f) for creep and shrinkage calculations ( Cl. 7.8(4),page 61, IRC 112)

V. The SLS check is carried out as per IRC 112 for following load combinations.

Combination Factors
SLS DL SIDL LL C & S Prestress
Combination 1 1 1 1 1 0.9 As per Cl. 7.9.5, IRC 112
Combination 2 1 1 1 1 1.1

VI. Ultimate resistance of PSC Girder in flexure has been checked as per IRC :112-2011

VII. A maximum jacking force of 78.3% of UTS is applied to prestressing cables (Refer Cl. 7.9.2 of IRC:112).

VIII. Differential Temperature Effect:

Under combination of Loads with differential temp. effect, Live Load is considered as per
Table 3.3 of IRC:6-2016

IX. Modulus of Elasticity of concrete at earlyfage shall be considered as computed below.

10 CHECK FOR ULTIMATE STRENGTH

In the present calculation of the ultimate moment capacity of the composite

section, the pre-strain in the concrete, due to the prestress is ignored.

The pre-strain in the strand is determined for the condition after all losses have
occurred.

The strain in the diagram are the additional strains due to loads. Hence the pre-
strain has to be added to the strand strain at each level to obtain the total strain.

The strain at the top of the slab is taken as 0.0035, the failure strain of concrete.
Ultimate failure is by crushing of the concrete, not by yielding of the strands.

This section contains the check for Interface shear developed at the junction between Precast
girders and cast-in-situ concrete. The check is performed as per Section 10.3.4 of IRC:112-2011.

The Interface Shear stress should satisfy the following condition:

VEdi  VRdi VEdi = Interface Shear stress
VRdi = Resisting capacity at the section

6.0 STAGES OF ANALYSIS

Analysis stages are similar to that of construction stages as provided in Design Basis Report.

a Stage - 1 : Erection of Precast Girder in position over temporary support

Analysis parameters
Loads Considered : Self Weight of PSC Girder, Deck Slab & Diaphragm
Support Type : Simply Support

b Stage - 2 : Composite action of Girder, Diaphragms & Deck Slab

Analysis parameters
Loads Considered : Self Weight of Diaphragms, Deck Slab, Wearing Coat & Crash Barrier
