Frank Lloyd Wright,
Winslow House, River Forest, 1893.
• Symmetrical Street Facade With Classic Dignity
• Unlike Victorian Houses, Horizontal Lines Were Emphasized
• Low Hipped Roof .
• Its broad roof overhang shelters a dark band of plaster
ornamentation
• Below that are walls of orange Roman brick—longer and lower than
standard brick.
• Decorative Bands Of ornately decorated white framework
emphasizing the front door
• Upper Floor Windows Placed In Terracotta Ornamentation.
• Plan Is Complex Interlocking Of Varied Spaces
• Ornamental Detail Like Stained Glass
• A More Geometric Approach Towards Design

LSAD
LSAD
Features

• Ribbons of carved patterns

surround the front door,
creating an almost
ceremonial feeling for what
is a relatively modest
entrance.

LSAD
Features

• From a distance, the house

appears to have a flat dark
band running around its
top. When they reach the
house, visitors discover
that it’s actually an
ornately floral relief. It’s
done in plaster

LSAD
Features
• The very large living room has the wood banding and bay-
window seating nook designed by Wright, as well as Winslow’s
light fixtures.

LSAD
Features
• Contains both space
for a sizable table and
at the far end, a
projecting bay.
• Carved pillars, a
chandelier, and a
built-in bench make it
a grand, but also
comfortable space.

LSAD
Features
• Decorative tracery fills the
bay window panes,
narrowing and emphasizing
the view out to the yard.

ROBIE HOUSE
• The large house for Frederick Robie in south Chicago (1908–
10) is one of the most successful of all Wright’s houses.
• Low- walled gardens and terraces and extended sloping
hipped roofs surround living spaces that flow together.
• A central fireplace and chimney backed by an open stairway
separate the two spaces without walls or doors.
• Stained glass in the windows
• Wooden bands across ceiling surfaces, and built in woodwork
fittings and lighting fixtures give the interiors a unified
character.

LSAD
ROBIE HOUSE

• Originally, furniture, rugs, and textiles were all designed by

Wright.
• The high- backed dining chairs were intended to give a sense
of enclosure to those sitting together around the table.
• The table itself was unusually low, and supported by corner
posts that rise above the table top to become lighting fixture.
