Matrimony Readings Essay
Tobit 8:4-8: I chose this passage because of the idea of prayer to God as a couple. A
married couple should pray together, and worship together. God wants couples to put him first in
their relationship and that’s when His blessings will come. In this passage we see a man named
Tobiah and his wife saying a prayer to God and praising him. This is representative of the
Sacrament of Matrimony because there is a man and woman together to get married, they are
both willing in the relationship and they pray to be together until old age. This passage also
shows a couple that puts God at the center of their lives and relationship which is the biggest
Revelation 19:5-9: I chose this passage because even toward the end of the Bible there is
still representations of the Sacrament of Matrimony. This scripture shows the imagery the church
as the bride of Christ and when Jesus comes again to claim us as his own it is the wedding day.
This is important because it gives us a model to follow just like many other things in the Bible.
The relationship between Christ and the church shows us how we ought to act in a relationship,
not only marital but with anyone. Christ sets the example of caring for the church, he is willing
to lay down his life for the church. In a marriage each person should have that willingness to
protect and care for their spouse in any and every situation.

Mark 10:6-9: I chose this passage because it talks about the oneness that a married
couple should share within a relationship. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and
mother [and be joined to his wife], and the two shall become one flesh.” This oneness is
important but not as important as God’s love and mercy, which ultimately upholds the marriage
and makes it sacred. But it is the oneness between the two that shows the love they have for each
other. It shows the willingness in both of them to be apart of a marriage and trust in God to make
it work. In this passage we also see another important factor to how Catholics view marriage.
We see that it needs to be between a man and a woman. “But from the beginning of creation,
God made them male and female.” At the creation of humans God made man, Adam, and put
him in charge of the garden. But God saw that Adam needed help so he created a helper for him,
the woman, Eve. The two became one in their relationship with each other and God. This sets
